PlayStation Store briefly compromised by hackers photo

Reports have been coming in that Sony's PC PlayStation Store has been the latest victim of hackers, although the extent of the unauthorized break-in appears to be minimal. According to Sony's own consumer alerts page:
    Notice to PLAYSTATION®Network Users

We have found out that there has been a possibility of unauthorized access to personal information on the PLAYSTATION®Store through PCs, a content download service of the PLAYSTATION®Network. Although unlikely, it is possible that the passwords of a small percentage of PLAYSTATION Network users may have been changed through unauthorized access, making it possible to view users' personal information and/or use the Wallet for the PLAYSTATION Store. PLAYSTATION Network accounts do not display entire credit card numbers.

We have taken immediate measures to rectify this issue and system security is restored.

We have investigated the extent of unauthorized access and possible alteration of passwords that could have occurred before corrective measures were taken, and are directly contacting customers who may have been affected by this incident. In order to verify that your account is intact, we strongly suggest that PLAYSTATION Network users sign in to the service. If you can successfully sign in with your pre-set password, your account is not affected by this incident.

For additional information and immediate 24 hour online support, click here for the PlayStation Knowledge Center.

Sony promises to contact those that may be affected, but needless to say, it would be a good idea to log into that account of yours when you get the chance, and put any doubt you have to rest.

[Thanks, Justin!]

Hackers are equal opportunity. Hasn't the 360 been compromised in the past, too?

Yeah, both the 360 and PS3 have been compromised, but primarily via the Web. I'm not too keen on my Web-based login being directly tied to my PSN Store account.

Why not buy access to all DLC at once while you're busy hacking the PSN instead of stealing others' account info that doesn't display credit card info? Meh noobs.

Maybe I'm confused, but this doesnt sound like hte PSN store that is accessed through the PS3. This sounds like the recently released PSN store FOR PC that you download PSP stuff through that is actually a website accessable by your internet browser on your pc?

Actually, wasn't the 360 compromised via social engineering, which is the most common form of hacking these days.

How was the PSN hacked? Do we know yet?
