PlayStation Phone is a possibility, claims Ericsson Prez photo

Hideki Komiyama, president of Sony Ericsson, has expressed interest in working with the PlayStation brand to help his mobile phone division break into the gaming market. Komiyama admits that Ericsson has failed to keep up with the ever-changing market, especially proving itself unable to stand up against the iPhone.

Ericsson has previously worked with the Walkman and Cybershot brands, and this leads Komiyama to suggest that a PlayStation-branded phone "could happen," also adding that: "If we do not adapt to this new technology or new market environment, we're going to lose."

It's obvious that these days, it's not enough to just be a phone anymore. Perhaps PlayStation could help to create a more desirable phone in the face of Apple's trendy product, but it will take more than a few games to help topple such a giant. Would you be interested in a PlayStation Phone, or should Sony just concentrate on making the PSP more useful?

Hah, it'd also be called the PSP. Or PSPhone. Yeah.

To be honest, why not just mod the current PSP to make it more like a phone?

About 75% of all the items in my house are Sony, and I would love everything in my house to a Sony item. Literally. Toaster, fridge, the loo (just for you Jim), the bed, curtains, counter tops. You get the idea. Oh, and if Sony made a car, I would buy that as well.

@benjaxez: I was waiting for someone to mention the size. =P The problem with making it smaller is that the game screen will also be smaller too (unless they figure something amazing out for that).

I'm thinking it like a Blackberry in size, with the full keyboard. Some keys translate to the directional pad, to the four face buttons, and whatever else they'd like. That would be possible, but I can't see it having terribly good games, with both the size and the power of the system coming into question.

Mobile phones have always had mobile phone games in my eyes.

the only way is to give it more features and freedoms then a custom firmware (when eventually hacked) could do. if sony releases a psp that's almost completely open source and its a damn good phone then it stands a really good chance. if not, its another one to the junkpile of technology.

Their phones are subpar and the psp has issues that need to be fixed before they even contemplate the idea of making a mobile gaming phone. Also Sony does stand to make some profit by releasing better version of the PSP before releasing a gaming phone.

No , cause a mobile phone ducktaped with a PSP doesn't work .

No. The PSP has a hard enough time doing one thing good. It does a lot of things barely adequately.

I'm suprised given the DS' demographics, we havent seen Nintendo partner with someone to release a DS phone, that is a can't-fail idea honestly.
