We keep hearing about some kind of PlayStation Phone, but it always seems too silly to believe. Don't get me wrong; Sony makes a fine mobile phone, and their various branded (and mostly Japanese) mobile devices are all pretty cool. It's just that this particular one doesn't seem real.
Now we're hearing that they phone could launch as early as next year. Next Gen says that Sony is said to be considering launching a PlayStation-branded phone that would incorporate elements of PSP functionality, and this could be released as early as Christmas 2009.
They also say that this new phone would not be co-developed with Ericsson, like the rest of their phones are. Why would Sony go solo on this? A recent Marketing Week article explains:
...industry source says the relationship between Sony and Sony Ericsson has become “frosty” and he adds that Sony has learned from its “strategic error” of giving its Walkman branding to Sony Ericsson.
An insider adds that internal conversations have already confirmed that Sony would “never give its PlayStation branding” to the Sony Ericsson joint venture.
Ouch.
Would you go for a PlayStation Phone? Would it be cool to hold a PSP to your ear?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Yes I would buy a playstation branded phone. Its a perfect mix the N-gage was crap. Nokia the largest phone developer couldn't make a mobile phone game device but sony the "winner" of the last two generations of video games and just so happens to make phones and already have a foot in the ring of mobile game devices definately have a good chance of breaking into and actually starting that whole market. No one else has even really been able to establish themselves as a solid gaming phone device and if they managed to work it into a media device they would have the whole game/phone market cornered.
its about time sony realises that its not a lack of features that turns people off from getting one but the lack of great games...
No, I don't want to carry around a phone, portable gaming system and movie player every day. Nor do I want to pay for a device on which I can watch tiny movies and make clumsy phone calls. I want to take my small cell phone with me to work, and then go home and play games or watch movies on my nice big TV.
I definitely hope those images aren't real. That thing looks awkward.
You would think they would realize that games sell systems by now. Japan has recently discovered the PSP thanks to a game that's essentially Pokemon. Couldn't Sony make an equivalent for it's other territories and get sales up?
I love my PSP, but seriously, I wonder if Sony really knows what it wants out of the PSP... still!
