PlayStation Network update may come 'later this month' photo

Representatives from Psyonix Studios, the developer responsible for PlayStation Network downloadable title Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Power Battle-Cars (SARPBCLOLBBQ, for short) leaked information for Sony’s next system firmware update on their message boards. Among the comments was a release window for "later this month," which may get you revved considering the rumored might (included after the break) of the update.

Responding to a post about a PSN sign-out bug, one rep wrote, “Sony mentioned a bug they fixed with the next system software update (2.7.0) that might resolve these issues, but we have to narrow it down and verify it's the same problem to be sure it's that and not something we need to fix on our end.”

Another rep dropped possible release information, although it’s questionable how amusing patches are: “IIRC [If I recall correctly] it will drop later this month. And contain lots of fun new fixes. I'm excited about this one, lots of new stuff.”

The latter comment has since been wiped, but its digital memory will remain with us forever. May it rest in peace, and may we all celebrate the scandalous information conveyed to us before meeting its untimely doom.

Rumored feature list. (Grain of salt, people.)

  • Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.
Gamer Card & Trophies:
  • Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the Playstation Store aesthetic.
  • Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting "Recent Trophy History" option.
  • Newly aquired trophies auto-sync in the background
  • Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.
In-Game XMB:

  • Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.

Oooh, in-game voice chat, eh? Nice.

I really hope this is true!

I want to send 30 seconds of heavy breathing to...well, everybody.

I've been quietly hoping that these rumours are true.

The trophies and XMB tweaks are fantastic, but using the Internet Browser at the same time would be seriously freakin sweet. Shame we won't be able to alt-tab between game and browser (whilst keeping sessions alive).

But who knows in the future.

If that list is true, I'll have a pitched tent for weeks.

Finally, voice chat...it was a huge pain in the ass to have to quit anything you were doing to join a chat with a friend. Hopefully this will be similar to the Live party system where you can't hear anybody else but your friends in the party.

I wish they added the "Join friend's game" at last! Or Join someone from "Players Met" list. It's one of the most annoying omissions of PSN (aside from an ability to globally mute a player, or "avoid" or "prefer" him, or submit a grief report - the way it's done in XBL).

But, it seems, Sony is moving towards that, at a snail's pace... Maybe by the time their supposed PS3 life time ends in 10 years, they'll finally catch up with Microsoft? :)

So this one doesn't cure cancer?? PHAIL!!

Actually, I'm excited for the faster loading in-game XMB. I find it annoying when you press the PS Button and have to wait a few seconds for everything to load up. Also the ability to search for porn in between matches is going to be nice ^_^

You know what microsoft and sony should do? For every achievment or trophy you unlock you get some points. If you get enough points you can use those points to buy free downloadables or something like that... But that's just like rewarding addiction, so let's hope they don't do that. Don't what them to turn out like WoW trading cards, do we?

Jumping jigawatts! If this whole list is true, I will be ECSTATIC. Especially for the voice features.

However put me in the Qraze club on this one, doubt lingers.

I'm still not seeing multiple PSN account logins and headset connections simultaneously. I love the list, but I'm not going to stop bitching until these two things happen.
