PlayStation Move is priced to make a profit photo

Sony often operates at a loss while Nintendo always prices to profit. Since Sony is shamelessly copying Nintendo in a bid to make the exact same amount of money, it stands to reason that PlayStation Move will be true to the winning formula and get a price designed to make instant cashback.

"We are pricing Move as if we are launching a new platform," says Worldwide Studios VP Shuhei Yoshida. "So because the install base of Move will help third party studios create games for it, we benefit by helping those third-parties. But we are not losing money with each one we sell."

It's going to be interesting to see how the Sony Wiimote does. I think it'll sell plenty to those who already own a PS3, but I'm not sure it'll be a system seller, especially to the mainstream consumers who already own a Wii and don't really care about HD graphics. Those people already have Wii sports and probably can't see the point in spending another $300 to get a prettier looking Wii Sports. I could be wrong, but I just can't see Sony making lightning strike twice in a market that Nintendo's already cornered.

Hey Jim. The submit news feature appears to be down for me, but you might wanna check out why the PSN video store pulled the episode of "Queen's Blade: Season 1: Episode 1: High Spirits – The Vagrant Warrior" that was advertised as free on the PSN us blog this morning.

I guarantee you'll get a laugh.

Here's a hint, lot's of "Bare breasts" and "Nipples spitting acid". hahaha

"There not "shamelessly copying Nintendo" "

Yes they are.

Whether they had a little failed EyeToy peripheral or not isn't the question. Move is not that peripheral. Move is a shameless copy of the Wii remote.

So yes, they are.

Copying or not, Sony has its core audience in mind at launch with the Move - I'll be buying it day one to play RE5: Move.

The Wii, at launch, and seemingly the Kinect don't have as much of a push for core motion games as Sony seems to have. I'm excited to see what they come up with.

Sony is just not original anymore.
The only thing they got going for them is probably HD graphics.

And I like Sony, but they're getting way to desperate

not buying one of these. i'm not down with the waggle. if the next console generation sees motion-control as the standard, then i'm going the PC gamer route.

It's all up to the library, I guess! If they can come up with something substantial that you won't get bored with after fifteen minutes, maybe they can pull it off. Or, hell, add some functionality to regular games that'll make you not want to look back. Personally, I could see the thing doing great wonders for the interfaces in these user content-based games that're making the rounds these days.

Like Natal...err Kinect..I'm going to get Move so, 30 years down the road, I can hug it like I can ROB right now.

Only in this case it'll look like I'm hugging a glowing cock. But hey, if the media industry doesn't completely destroy collectibles it might just be worth something. :)

A few things:

1) Sony is copying Nintendo.

2) If Sony is advancing what the Wii started then it doesn't really matter.

3) One thing that -doesn't- hurt Sony in this regard is that Sony (and Microsoft for that matter with the Kinect) is that they might be able to attract more 3rd party developers than the Wii did. The usual wii-sports like games will obviously be made for both Kinect and Move, but if they can get a decent library for either of them that rise above the shitty shovelware that plagued the Wii then its all good.

I don't hate the Move but it did kill future Heavy Rain DLC. I know I'm alone but that makes me sad.

Also, who did it before who and all that jazz is irrelevant. At the end of the day all that matters is doing it well. If you're gonna get your panties in a bunch over that please grow up.

Main difference is.... (apart from the fact that move has the often ridiculed ball on the end which is accurately tracked, which the Wii doesn't have)

Move has proper games that appeal to me as a core gamer.

Socom, killzone, lbp, the fight, that rez sequel, resident evil, gran turismo, etc have made me plan to buy on day 1.

I think they'll see at least some amount of success with Move, provided they use their quasi-Wiimote tech to craft experiences that will actually appeal to the hardcore gamers who already own a PS3. I don't see it selling systems, but they really don't need much help there anymore.

"The Wii is just as "hardcore" as any other system. When it comes to gameplay and creativity, it is not lacking at all. I guess some people just buy the lowest common denominator BS about the Wii being a toy, or simply a mini-game console. Only the ignorant and whiny kids of the world would make these statements about the console."

Wii...hardcore?....me...laughing...uncontrollably...ahhahahahaha!

Come on dude, really? I try to stay as optimistic as anybody in the gaming world, but to state that the Wii is as important to the "core" crowd as a 360 or PS3 is fucking laughable. The Wii does have good games, even good core games, but it doesnt have nearly the library of titles the real core-gaming systems have. Trying to admit that just makes you look dumb.

@mattrodroid The wii is basically a toy aimed at the youngest generation. Nothing rated m and very little rated t gets anywhere on that console because the wide expanse of people buying wiis r children and old people trying to recapture youth or some bs. The move will trounce the wii in more core and adult games because the move cares about them. The wii is making so much money of kids they dont need those sales and thats fine. The move sees the gap and fills it with ease.

That couldn't be fatter from the truth, I would think that more systems than you realize will sell thanks to HD and Augmented reality. See you can't just look at it as another Wiimote because it's more with that camera and Mic.

I predict Move will sell more systems as the software builds up, more ways to use that camera and Mic to do different things that clearly separates it from the Wii. I also wouldn't underestimate peoples craving for HD because the Wii really dropped the ball in that department if their goal is to hang around for more years to come.

I also see clear as day that you will snag a chunk of gamers on FPS controls alone. It's about time that a console gets a better solution for First Person Shooters! As more come out that support the Move expect Xbox fan's to take note.

Cage had like 3 more pieces of DLC written and the team was working on them when Sony told them to release the new Move edition of Heavy Rain. Cage said it basically breaks the game as far as delivering DLC because now they would essentially have to release DLC for two nearly different games so he canned them. :/

@Aurvantoid
It doesn't even matter if they advance it. It just doesn't have to suck. Saying copying somehow degrades a company is silly schoolyard talk. Companies copy all the time. Our entire technological society is only really a handful of gadgets made by a million different companies in a slightly different ways.

Not to mention Sony is notorious for following directly behind the footsteps of their successful competitors. C'mon. They kind of have to considering their fiscal position over the last decade. 3D TV is really the most original and risky thing they've done in some time.

But again that's irrelevant so long as it doesn't suck. Originality does not produce quality. The Move could be button for button what the Wii is. As long as it doesn't suck and has a consistent flow of solid software I'm a happy consumer.

Personally, I see the Wiimote as motion control that uses cheap tricks like shaking and waggling, in order to give some form of motion control. The move is more like the Wii motion plus plus plus, so the better graphics aren't the only reason i'd get it. Plus I hate the Wii sensor bar.

Jim, your only "proof" is you saying "yes they are"

I just told you, Sony all ready had this idea years before the wii, they just improved it and added buttons.
So if they just improved there technology, its not a rip off.
You are just biased against sony for some odd reason.

@Nyktharas, haha so true, people don't think how much wii controllers cost...4 nunchucks are 80, 4 remotes are 160, 4 motion plus item are 80. Add it up guys.

$300 for a comparable Wii setup. Though your Wii already comes with one set. So Wii ($200) + 3 extra sets ($225) = $425 to get up and running. For a Move 4-player setup it would be PS3 ($300) + Eye Toy ($40) + 4 sets of mover controllers ($320) = $660 plus games. It may not seem like a huge difference to some, but at some point the money spent on this hobby becomes unjustifiable.

I agree with Magnalon.

Sony has FULL AAA title games supporting Move at launch and I want to support that over shovel ware crap that everyone else is doing.

I don't see them copying the Wii, they took the basic stuff the Wii has and ran further with it. Better motion, better graphics...this is not a carbon copy.

Sony is absolutely copying Nintendo. They are copying the Wii because there is money to be made. Now, that doesn't mean that Move isn't lightyears better. The DualShock and Xbox controllers copied the N64's analogue stick, but nobody is arguing that the PS3/360 controller aren't better. Just because you copy something doesn't mean it isn't an improvement and just because something is an improvement doesn't mean it isn't a copy.

I have to admit, was surprised at how cheap the actual remote was announced to be.

I got the PS Eye for $20, the remote will be $50, and the regular controller can be used in place of a Sub Controller. So $70 -- That's the price of a Collector's Edition game.
