PlayStation Move dock for PSP Go? Why? photo

What a strange combination! A patent fro 2009 from Sony gives an illustration for a dock for a PSP Go. This isn't just some charging dock, though. This dock contains a camera that works like the PlayStation Eye, and would detect PlayStation Move controllers. It seems this patent is for a dock that lets you use Move controllers for the PSP Go, which is probably one of the strangest ideas I've ever heard.

It seems even more silly when you scroll through the pictures in the patent document. Fig. 3A is particularly funny. It could be the stand-in for cover art for Samba de Amigo 3

I'm with Joystiq in that this would probably be better as a NGP dock, as the PSP Go is old news. Even then I don't see people playing a portable game system with controllers.

Because you can step your game up, duh!

It's everything Marcus hoped for in his short little life.

Wouldn't the distance needed between the user and the camera make it virtually impossible to see what's happening in the game?

This is a bad idea.

I think it could be cool. I mean we're thinking too traditionally. I'm sure Sony had/has some cool ideas and if nothing else its nice that the option is there.

If today's onslaught of news is any indicator, Sony won't really have much to surprise us with at E3.

Last Guardian is so being pushed to 2012 and after that Sony really has nothing in the way of development.

Me, too. I'd have the world best and busiest job - just packed with chances to say "that's the dumbest shit I've ever heard."

God, I'd love that.

Guys. PSP for very long time can put picture on TV. You can use your portable console as home console.

OMG SERIOUSLY SONY what the HELL is wrong with you???
EVERYONE AND THEIR DOG predicted the PSP Go would fail. Same for the Move. Now this. Just who the hell comes up with this stuff and is actually CONVINCED it will work?

what's the point of a PORTABLE system if you can't move around with it?
Want some advice to get money quick and now? Upload a ps2 emulator in the next update. There, loads of cash will be coming your way.

@7 so you think this is a good idea? playing with the move controllers on such a small screen. the psp (i would believe) was not designed for home use.

Wow. I mean, I know a lot of patents are just submitted "just in case," but it worries me that ANYONE at Sony directed that resources should go into making this patent.

NO ONE would ever buy this thing. The patent itself even tells you that you have to be considerably far away to be in range and that completely defeats the purpose of a portable machine.

Well Dtoid readership, I hate to be a hater, but this patent is actually kind of cool. Its not just a patent for a stand. The stand is dynamically linked with the portable device and the motion controller so that if the player moves out of range, the stand can readjust itself, i.e. will rotate to keep the player in a viable zone. So, imagine a game where you are moving in a 60-100 degree range around the stand. Also, it isn't just for PSP - this could be any portable device and most likely in the future, patent attorneys will be able to define that very broadly, meaning many devices could be "portable." Is it the next big thing? Probably not, but it is a cool idea for not having to limit players to standing directly in front of the TV.

@7 You do realize that connecting the PSP to the TV doesn't fill the screen, right? Games look shit small on an HD TV when you use the PSP Cables. Just saying.
