Don't worry, I'm sure they'll put a stop to that soon enough!
...
Oh wait, they already have! Thanks, online pass!
I seriously doubt many people using this feature legitimately have more than 2 PS3's sitting around...
Maybe gamers should pay for the games they play so that you know...companies can make more game
Once one lends a physical copy of a game to someone, one no longer has it to use oneself, after all.
Still, limitation of consumer power is limitation of consumer power, so boo.
My mum and sis had their own individual PS3s and we used to share games as a family. I moved to the US recently and had to get another PS3.......well I'm selling it next week, as that's just crap.
If I buy a novel or a dvd, must I buy multiple copies for people in the same household to enjoy¿¿¿¿
No freaking way.
Seriously... anything short of "we give up -- just play our games for free" sends gamers into a fit.
And because you don't buy multiple copies you won't be able to watch the same movie, at the same time in different places.
Your analogy is not analogous...
If I can move it to a new console if something breaks, that's fine. If not, fuck off, Sony.
The Wii has no transfer, I heard, and that's why I buy NOTHING on it anymore. Not even Bit.Trip
Bit of both. It is a bit annoying to phone up customer services to deactivate all your accounts once you reach your limit (something they dont JUST do... you have to convince them??) but I was actually surprised when I first bought my PS3 to learn that I could share the games with other people. What? In this day and age?!
Ahh well, doesn't really affect me anyway. I deactivated all my old and friends' PS3s, and stopped sharing so...
If I'm not mistaken, doesn't it allow you to download the games on another ps3 and then play them on any PSN ID you want?
Then again, I don't own any PlayStation's, so what do I know.
If we're in the same house we could! Had a setup so we could watch the same DVD on different TVs in my old house. Heck, I could even stream it to her if I wanted now that we're on different continents.
I'd say it was about damn time, to be honest. I wish they had done it before Capcom decided to do their DRM scheme with Bionic Commando 2 and that other game.
Legit users shouldn't have to pay because of a bunch of lil' shits abusing the system.
In addition, I'm not sure consumer rights allow a company to tighten DRM after initial agreement. They can give you more activations but they can't take them away. In any case, this is fucked up. I have a PS3 & PSP bound to my account. Unless this restriction is set to each console type, I won't be able to bind the new Vita I'd get.
The people honestly hurt by this are multiple console holders if it works the way most of us are assuming. Psp, vita, ps3, I'll own all of them soon, and this might royally fuck me.
Well said and I think most people miss that aspect of PHYSICALLY giving someone a medium to use. See kids, the laws of physics prevent both parties to use the same disc in two places at once. With digital distribution, that's not an issue. 5 people can "borrow" the game and play simultaneous;y. In fact, if I bought and shared that PSN online FPS (domination something), me and 4 friends could all play online together, but the developers would only get 1 purchase. Hardly fair...
They're not taking anything away. You still get 5 activations for anything bought up until now. Only the games bought going forward are going to be limited to 2.
That being said so long as they give us the tools to deactivate systems remotely It would not bother me much. Maybe add in another activation and meet in the middle? I don't know.
It's right in the source article, guys. Chill.
I'm not sure how they're going to work this though as they state that "newly purchased content will be restricted to 2 machines"... yet we apparently we have to deactivate old machines and only have 2 units activated. Some games won't play on machines that aren't activated, so this may actually affect some existing older games that were shared.
I predict that this is going to be messy. Sony never does anything in a simple manner and there is going to be some whining and screaming and stamping of feet going on!
You can currently have 5 consoles ACTIVATED on your account to use all your games. These can be DEACTIVATED at any time.
All this means for those with broken PS3's is that they need to DEACTIVATE the broken ones and ACTIVATE the new one. Job done.
This is a good move, game sharing is a dick move. Fair play Sony.
Although 3 "devices" would be more suitable, or 2 OF EACH "device" because come Feb I'll have a PS3, a PSP and a PSVita - but i suppose i'll stop using the PSP eh.
As far as "lending games" goes, someone above said it already - when you lend a game, you can't both play it at the same time - there was something like this on the MAG beta (long while ago, I know) where i could play it on someone elses PS3, but then couldn't play it on mine for 24 hours.
Finding that out during the excitement of the beta was a shock and really made me regret letting my casual mate try it out on my account!
(that same "anything for free" mate was the person who broke his PS3 and had to deactivate all his friends PS3's who he'd shared his games with before the new one would work - douchebag."
I can't read it at all unfortunately because the original news source was a blog post from Sony Japan, which is of course in Japanese. I'd love to see a post about this from Sony themselves that I can actually comprehend.
PSP: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PSP systems.
Please note that this update will not affect game content purchased before November 18. The PSP rights include PSP-1000/2000/3000 series as well as the PSPgo system.
PlayStation Network users are able to change the activation setting through each device, and Sony Computer Entertainment plans to provide a new PlayStation Network account management website where users will be able to deactivate particular devices attached to their PlayStation Network account via their PC."

Some people are jumping to some wrong conclusions. It doesn't sound that bad.
2 PS3
2 PSP
2 PSVITA
per account
So, no "I have a Ps3 and a PSP and a vita"
Their new agreements on the PSN say they can change anything without your consent, so, no "they promise me whatever"
And if anyone has tried, you can actually see your activated systems online, just log in to PlayStation.com and go to account management
I was worried because right now I have my PSN account on 3 PS3 and I own two of them outright while the other is my buddy who, yeah, I used to live with him.
So for the new games I'm not even mad.
"Please note that this update will not affect game content purchased before November 18"
I breathed a huge sigh of relief...
That said, even after after abusing the system myself, I really can't fault Sony, and especially the content owners for finally implementing this.
The dev's deserve the money for all their hard work.
