Sales for Sony's PlayStation 3 have been steadily increasing since the company found a way to remove its head from its ass by lowering the price point, and coming up with an advertising campaign that makes sense. According to the math wizards over at Shacknews, after the 6.5 million Q3 sales of the console that were recently announced, the grand total of PS3s sold is 33.71 million.
Look out Wii, here comes the PS3! Nah, I'm just kidding.
33.71 million is only half of the Wii's current worldwide sales, but Sony does seem to be catching up a bit to Microsoft, who sits not so comfortably at 39 million. With increasing year-over-year sales of the PS3 (Sony's already sold more PS3s this fiscal year than all of last fiscal year) we might see a new console sitting in second place pretty soon. God only knows how many systems God of War 3 is going to move.

Is that per console online, or per account? I know at least I have one user per region, so I can get access to all of the PSN stuff (except for video store).
But this is good news I guess, it might not have sold as well as PS1 and PS2 back in the day, but considering PS3 is going to have a 10 year lifespan, they might end up at a pretty big total at the end of the whole generation.
I don't know how much the Wii is still selling, but it was already outdated when it launched, it's only a matter of time before Nintendo brings out a new Wii, and I don't think all the casual Wii-owners are going to buy a new Wii just yet. So who knows, maybe Sony and Microsoft can still 'win' this thing long term? Not that it matters though.
Combine that with all the software sales and peripherals sold, they might end up with profit!
I think it has always been pretty normal to loose money per console sold (although maybe not as much as PS3), but that's how the business is. They make it up with the software sales, that's how it's always been.
I think we shall all be grateful for that Sony isn't charging us for online, even if they're losing so much money.

Yeah that's the way it usually works for a while after launch, but PS3 has had an unusually long period of time not making profit from the console. Combine that with mostly "poor"(not super bad, but bad compared to other consoles)game sales. I'd be suprised if Sony makes money at all on PS3. Considering the company has been in the hole by billions the past few fiscal years, I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of that is PS3's fault. I still want one, though. lol
Do you really believe that out of 33 million PS3 systems, 29 million are active PSN accounts on the PS3? As opposed to PSP or duplicate accounts?
And to be fair, that 20 million number you're deriding was the number of active paid Gold accounts. Not exactly the same figure.

from what my ps3 owner friends say, mag doesn't sound or look that good. While it might be better than cod (which I find boring now) I like my games to have a storyline, and from what I can tell MAG hasn't got one at all.

Sony made a lot of bad moves with the PS3's positioning to make an article that it's "only 7-8 million systems" behind its closest competitor seem a positive one.
Hey. I've only had my PS3 for a month. Not nearly long enough to be a good fanboy. I've bought dozens of games and poured 100s of hours into my 360 and regret none of it. I simply meant that PS3's media capabilities are a good deal better. I'm pretty sure I have a valid thought, though.

Anyway, I don't really see how this is news; for Sony to end up taking second place it's going to take so long and anyone who knows the console market knows it's never going to happen. Hell, even if they outsell 360 2mil consoles every year, and Microsoft DOESN'T SELL ONE CONSOLE, it's going to take them 4 years to break even with 360. FOUR.
Now take PS3 with a $100 pricedrop, new model line, massive money spent on advertising, etc while Microsoft just sits there doing nothing letting them have the spotlight, seemingly waiting for E3/Holiday season (with their lead,they don't have to desperately act asap). Then you take Sony losing money on every PS3 sold, and their 1.3 billion dollar loss last year because PS2/PSP aren't selling well anymore and they can't cover the money lost on PS3s (compared to Microsoft profiting on almost every division and sharing a 200m loss with Nintendo).
It's going to be amusing when Microsoft finally responds and the bigots who just have no idea about the vicious circle of the console war start pondering where did it come from and crawling back in their holes. You take Reach/F3/Natal for a holiday season, obvious HDD increase of skus (or new skus completely) and Jesus fucking Christ. Price drop? No need, with the Elite selling more than Arcade and average price of 360 sold at $261, all they have to do is change the skus/HDD. Destructoid already pointed at an obvious shelve push that hints 250gbconsoles on the way. Then MS does what it does best: advertisement.

It is pathetic in Japan, really... In many stores they have XBOX360 on sale for only 8000 yen(think about FFXIII, which is over 9000 yen when it first came out) or something which is like 80 dollars and still and you can see tons of systems lying in the store that can't sell. The buy back price for used PS3 in Japan is about 23,000 yen and for XBOX360, regardless of any edition, it's only 3,000 yen.
If you go on Japanese video game blog or forum, people just refer XBOX360 to "shit box" and the general reception of XBOX360 is really bad. I'm not being offensive or anything, it's just literally pathetic how XBOX360 is doing in Japan.
I've been PLAYING MAG hard, not riding it. I've been playing it because it's fucking awesome. One of the main reasons I'm a PS3 user rather than a 360 user, because the exclusives are so much better.
Exclusives aimed at and designed for ADULT gamers is what I want, and is exactly what Sony delivers.
I wasn't making that comment up, I had a 3-4 hour session, ended up joining a new clan and playing together for hours, and i loved every minute of it. It's very rare for a gaming experience to leave me feeling as high as MAG did last night.
eg, I started as squad leader on a squad of me, plus 7 clan members, I thought, shit, they're so going to kick me so one of them can lead (was expecting Xbox style "kiddie" users) but no, we talked and conferred and got the job done, it was close but we won the match, so they sent me a clan invite and we played a few matches as a whole 8 man team, helping and congratulating each other, using proper team tactics, we won some, we lost some but it was just so much fun!
MAG isn't an instant gratification game, it takes a few hours to get into it, to learn and understand it, if you don't like it, don't play it, that's your perogative.... but I FUCKING LOVE IT, i will talk about what I'm playing right now on the Toid and right now I'm playing the shit out of MAG.
I'd imagine I'm going to be playing it for some time too.
Really starting to see the maturity of most PSN users, (there are exceptions) never once regret going PS3 over 360, simply better games, more mature games and a more mature userbase.
