Sony has today announced that the PlayStation 3 has sold fifty million units worldwide, and yes, that's sold. Sony isn't pulling the sneaky "shipped" trick this time.
The system launched in 2006 and currently boasts over 75 million registered PlayStation Network accounts and 105,988 pieces of digital content on the PlayStation Store.
Quite the milestone for the Black Box o' Blu-ray. Feel free to offer your congratulations/fanboy flame-baiting in the comments!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
PS3 is my favorite home console and it proves more and more that the other consoles can't compete when we talk about the life cycle.
double standard
75 is a good number.
"Unfortunate"
hahahaha
Did you even read the damn article?
... And they're both still running!
My family uses the PS3 all the time, Mrs sc doesn't even know how to turn the eggsbawks on.
I have almost forgotten too!
@Sexualchocolate:
The fam can't figure out to turn on a 360...? Paint chip are NOT food. :P
did you even read the original announcement or like i don't know...any news about it on every other gaming website? Sony always used word "sold" when they meant shipped - just like Draxxlith said "sold to suppliers" which means "shipped".
same way Sony brags about milions of PSN accounts despite the fact that they're summing up PSN accounts on PS3s, PSPs, PCs and those who were created for PS2s.
on the other hand MS only lists full active xbox Live accounts - Gold ones. they could easilly lists accounts from first xbox, silver accounts, dead accounts etc. but they're not doing it since it does not show the actual state of the console. there are currently nearly 35mln active users who have Gold accounts - that tells you more than how many accounts were created that Sony posts don't you think? in those 75mln accounts there are 5 my own accounts(3 from my ps3, 1 on which i registered my ps2 and one i used for psp despite the fact that i only use that for psp and don't even remember accounts i used before) and my brother had 2. now consider the fact that we both sold our PS3s so that's several new accounts, right there alone.
@Lycan XIII
I lol'd
If i remember correctly, Trev had a link in one of his PS3 FNF's mentioning that PS3 surpassed 360 sales wise worldwide.
Good times on the sales though!
Wii – 84.64 million as of 31 December 2010
Xbox 360 – 50 million as of 6 January 2011
PlayStation 3 – 47.9 million as of 31 December 2010
References looked accurate.
As far as "shipped" goes, I'm fine with using it as a metric. From a business standpoint, it's understandable why so many corporations go that route: it's a hard number, a fact, while sold-to-customers will always be an estimate that depends on data from other organizations and corporations.
Sofik must just be curled up in a ball on his mommas basement floor screaming NOOOOOOOOOooooo....
The Sony fanboys are no better, let's just leave them all be hmm?
I'm pretty sure that sell-through is sales to consumers while sell-in is shipments to distributors, etc.
The press release is here:
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/pdf/110415_e.pdf
I hate saying anything that makes sofik happy, but I think the 360 is just past 53 million shipped. The PS3 is probably something like 3.5 million behind in total units moved.
For the past month or so, the PS3 has been outselling the 360 by about 25-to-30k units a week, so it's fair to say that the gain is around 100k units a month. This pattern should continue for most of the year, with the Gears 3 launch looking like the only month Microsoft will "win" in the first three quarters. 4Q is anyone's guess, however, depending on E3 announcements and what kind of price cuts and marketing moves are made.
The PS3 will probably end 2011 having made up around a million units on the 360, or perhaps a bit more.
Now, all that being said, I still think it's kind of silly to compare the totals for two products that launched over a year apart.
The shipped/sold thing is retarded. Let it go. Also, I want to say that I remember a recent Microsoft press release that used "units sold," but it was, in fact, units shipped. Could be wrong. Either way, who cares?
Shipped/sold on games is a little different, I recently found out retailers do have the option of returning unsold stock, that's why you see massive price cuts and stuff from publishers who would rather sell it cut rate than have to take it back... but with consoles? I'm not seeing a lot of PS3s getting price cuts on the shelves from lack of sell through.
Yeah I know. I'm just hoping I can add a little bit to the brain aneurysm you know Sofik must be having. This news just has to be cracking his brain.
Mattodroid is right too. What does it matter as long as there are plenty of awesome games to play?
Shoot, does that mean my vote doesn't count?
There is no perfect comparisson between sales, but if you take into account the RRoD and e74 rates on pre-slim and pre-jasper models of 360s (which I believe one limited study reported as up to 60% and Microsoft claim is as low as 4%), and if you assume that some owners were out of warranty and had to suck it up and buy a new 360, as I did twice, I would suggest PS3 has already passed 360 in terms of individual console owners.
Also, it is tempting to say PS3 and 360 have come 2nd and 3rd this generation. But I cannot help but think that a large chunk of Wii sales were as a fitness accessory, as a "baby sitting tool" and as a party game. It does not deliver the gaming experience I get from my PS3 and 360, save for two games a year. And all I think about, playing those two games, is that I wish they were on PS3. Move, Kinect and some software tries to grasp at those markets that have driven Wii sales. But I do not know how much credence there is to say that Wii has "beaten" 360 and PS3 when I consider it a different type product. It'd be like saying that snowboard and skateboard sales are #2 and #3 to bicycle sales.
"My family uses the PS3 all the time, Mrs sc doesn't even know how to turn the eggsbawks on."
I was going to chime in with a "your wife's an idiot!", but then I remembered that MINE doesn't know how to use the PS3. So I guess they cancel each other out ;)
