PlayStation 3 outperforming Xbox 360 in software sales? photo

You really wouldn't imagine it, but according to financial reports, it would appear that several huge publishers are making more money from the PlayStation 3 than they are with the Xbox 360. One writer, who uses the term "bread-winner" far too much, has been checking out some numbers which indicate that the PS3 is now capable of outperforming the 360 in terms of software sales.

The writer claims that EA's financial statement shows that the PS3 accounts for 17% of its total revenue while the 360 only manages 10%. Ubisoft has a similar story, with the PS3 netting 20% of software sales with the 360 lagging behind at with 14%. In the case of Namco Bandai, not even Tales of Vesperia could stop the PS3 netting the company 57% more sales than the 360.

It is Konami's report, however, which is the most telling. Doubtlessly helped by Metal Gear Solid 4, the PS3 accounts for a massive 57% of Konami's sales, while the 360 only manages a pitiful 2.6%.

This would all seem to suggest that Microsoft's company line of being THE place for software sales is a lot of horsesh*t. Of course, these examples by no means define the industry as a whole, but they show that the PS3 is putting up a Hell of a fight on some very important battlegrounds. When you consider that the 360 has the larger install base, it only serves to make the PlayStation 3's software successes all the more impressive. Fair play to Sony on this one. Fair play indeed.

360 has the "larger install base" but everyone is too busy playing one or two games. :P

I went there.

I find that hard to stomach... at least as a meaningful statistic. It could mean than over the slow season, Sony has simply been trying harder. But that's the funny thing about statistics: There is never more or less than 100%.

Bring on the holidays. Those numbers will probably shift to 360 pretty quickly.

Yet 360 has a larger software attach ratio. That could probably be explained by the fact that the best selling games on 360 are mostly published by Microsoft itself.

Well if Konami put out anything worth buying on the Xbox I'm sure that their income would improve. Throwing out Frogger for XBLA doesn't count as a 'major release'.

Still... numbers are numbers and they'll be skewed by anyone to show the data they want you to see. I could care less.

Due to the fact this info contradicts other info what I dun read on the internet, I'm keeping my cynical hat on.

There isn't quite enough info here for my liking, to really draw a conclusion.

I mean, with a list like that, I'd expect those number to much higher than 3%. Those number must be false! </sarcasm>

Same critisism goes to Namco Bandai. The only games they've published (and brought over) that I'd want to play are Ace Combat and Tales of Vesperia.

I'm gonna stop here, this could go on for much loinger than I'd like in a comment. But know that it'd go on a lot about developers releasing quality games.

And on the topic of Namco, they've released, I believe, 2 Tekken games on the PS3, along with the 360 games.

it doesnt suprise me... there was a period from I believe january till april or so where PS3s were outselling 360s as well.. these stats are probably a result of that. (Although I dont have access to that information off hand, sorry guys T_T )

I dont think the holiday season is going to scew the numbers back towards microsoft at all either. Sadly, PS3's October-January game lineup is superior to 360's (yes its subjective, but at the same time hard to argue against).

Didn't the 360 account for something like 52 percent of total software sales in 2007? How do you go from that to only 10 percent the following year? It's not like they released less games in 2008.

Weird.

1) I thought the 360 had around a 8:1 attach rate. How does this jive with those numbers?

2) Price drops (greatest hits) just started on PS3. Is it possible that many of the companies are making more per unit because they cost more?

The last time EA's financial reports claimed that the PS3 was selling more of its software, the reason for the difference was due to the projections of DLC sales which were simply factored in earlier for the Xbox 360's sale statements while the PS3's were not estimated at all. They were counted later and so they continued to filter over into further fiscal reports while the similar amount of money was already in the Xbox's portfolio. I doubt EA has radically changed their accounting practices recently.

And is it really that shocking to anyone that a great deal of Japanese publishers have had issues selling games on the Xbox? Aren't many of them routinely considered to be on the decline anyways? If there's a larger install base for the Xbox and they're somehow making more sales on the PS3, that just seems like piss poor business decisions on their part to me.

Another explanation of these figures is that PS3 owners are generally fewer and more "core" than all of the 360 owners, so they are more likely to buy big name games from big name companies, whereas a large portion of 360 owners will pick up Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? when it's released.

without buying into the console war, I think alot of people here hit it on the head. Many of the developers taken into account traditionally release junk on the 360, and have big hits on the PS3.

It could also be said that the only developers releasing games for a predominantly western audience there is EA and Ubisoft, which would explain the higher rate on PS3, compared with the other western publishers releasing on 360.

MMM... in the ubisoft numbers, both Xbox 360 and PS3 are 20%, and my guess is last year PS3 had more due to late ports like Rainbow Six Vegas which were already out on 360. I think the holiday season results will be more telling as most of the games coming out during this period are debut titles.

Read each company's posted official finacial report. See sales by consoles and you'll see that Sony's PS3/PSP/PS2 takes a large chunk of the profit cake.

Probably....

My friend (well, not really friend) has a 360 that he uses to play burned games. He has had Fallout3 and Gears 2 for a few weeks now, which rock the casbah as well.

Apparently the xbox is not really modded it's all on how the disc is burned.....

Not hard to imagine that PS3 sales are better for an individual publisher, seeing how few games there are for the PS3 when compared to XBOX. That's like saying I get the bigger piece of pie when it's divided by 3 than when it's divided by 300. How titles on XBOX vs How titles on PS3?

I simply don't believe it. When it costs half as much to develop a game on the 360 and it sells twice as much on the 360, it would create more revenue.

did anyone ever consider the fact that the X360 is moddable (ie do not need to pay for games, backups) and the PS3 isn't? harder to sell games when you can torrent them (ie fallout3).

however.. then again, over 90% of stats are made up. ;)

Game stores make profits off of used games, not the publishers; and considering the majority of the gamers I personally know buy used games...well, xbox has more used games available than PS3, so of course the numbers look better to the publishers on their "new" sales.

Unfortunately, I would imagine that means more publishers will switch over to PS3 exclusive, until the cycle repeats.

As near as I can tell from looking at the EA financial report, those numbers are just made up. From p. 103 of EA's most recent report [pdf link], EA sold $589 million in the last year on 360 and $282 million on PS3.

As for the other companies, here's the important statistic:
Ubisoft sold 31% of its games in North America over the same time reported.
Konami sold 37% of its games in North America over the same time reported.
And I can't read moonspeak, but I'm willing to bet Namco/Bandai has a similar story.

To sum up: the EA numbers are false, and otherwise, sales fall in line with geographic proportions of console ownership.

Yeah. I believe it. The PS3 is really started to kick ass. The IT DOESNT HAVE GAMEZZ!! argument doesn't work anymore, and many of its games are heavy hitters - this is proven by the fact that ive taken a break from my all day Little Big Planet Extravaganza to comment on this story.

And I know a lot of folks driven to buy the PS3 because they got tired of the 360 breaking so they sold it. I know it sounds fanboyish to say that, but its true - I was one of them. It was ok back when sony wasn't enticing, but I think the shoddy craftsmanship might bight ms in the ass now that sony has built up its library. That plus free online and throw in games like LBP and Resistance 2 and i think your gonna continue to see numbers like this.

I believe the people who nailed it on the head are the ones that looked at the game lists for the 360 and PS3 for those companies. If you're selling crap games on one console and selling big name games on the other, of course the console with the good games is going to have higher software sales. It's just common sense.

@Dexter345:

I don't think that's the case at all. All of my Wii-hating "core" friends have and play 360s and buy a shitload of games for them. How many have PS3s? One. One of my friends has a PS3, and he bought it used for $150 because it'd be a cheap BluRay player. He doesn't even have any games for it.

I'm thinking that, with the 360 being the lead console, money used to produce the game takes from the money earned. Because the PS3 is, in a simple way, a "copy-pasta", the profit is higher.

Also, Konami's seems to be too big of a difference.

I have all 3 consoles but this just seems wrong....
