PlayStation 3 Intercooler: Second time's a charm? photo

Nyko, the been there done that before company, has proudly released the PlayStation 3's version of the ever so popular Intercooler. While recently garnering a decent review over at IGN, it's just a bit concerning that they once again decided that the pass through power connector that melted many an Xbox 360 and voided a few warranties in the process, was the way to go. From their own product page:

Keep your console running at optimal conditions with the Intercooler for PlayStation 3. The Intercooler’s patented technology insure a steady and improved air flow within the console keeping your investment running at cooler temperatures and extending the life of the console.
The Intercooler clips on easily to the back of the console, no tools required. Featuring a pass through power connector the Intercooler is powered by the PS3, and requires no additional wires or batteries. The Intercooler’s compact design allows for vertical or horizontal placement of the PS3 making it ideal for any home theater set-up.

Now I don't have exact numbers, but I haven't heard too many people complaining about the PS3 overheating on them (unlike my Xbox 360, which you can cook a three course meal on after a gaming session). Here's to hoping that whether truly needed or not, Nyko was able to engineer an Intercooler that doesn't come with nasty side effects this time. If that doesn't pan out, there's always Pelican, with a version of their own.

Why are people obsessed with cooling devices for consoles? They seem to do more harm than good.

Why do these products even exist? Shouldn't these systems be built to not overheat? I'm looking at you MS.

People need to stop mollycoddling their consoles with this shit. Just stick it in the freezer like everyone else.

This product is pointless. My PS3 has never overheated, even after hours of gameplay. Plus, the system is designed to shut off if it does reach a critical temp. (that's in the manual!)

I use liquid Nitrogen to keep my Wii running cool.

Can't people just not bury their consoles in the back of an entertainment center? I mean you've got a thing that is known to generate heat, sitting on a shelf behind a door, usually wooden, and it's only vent for air is a tiny pre-drilled hole for the AC/AV cables to pass through. The game consoles should be placed where they get the most airflow. Anyone concerned about their equipment should be thinking of how the equipment's going to perform in it's environment before they consider things like fan noise or visibility.

Actually, I lied. I attached some heatsinks and bought a Mudkips to watercool my Wii.

All jokes aside, I bought one of these for my 360 when they first hit the streets. Had it on my console for a grand total of 3 days, before word I caught the bad publicity on the Internet and removed it. For the record, it never harmed my Xbox 360. Then again, it certainly wasn't on there very long.

Now it suffers a lonely existence in my closet. Too bad the kiddies just didn't know how to get along better. *Sigh* I had high hopes for that product.

Would/does a product like this help someone who foolishly places a PS3 or 360 into a "closed" environment? 4 RLZ?

Yeah, I like my Mudkipz. She waters the garden when she's not cooling the Wii.

These add ons void your warranty! So if you were dumb enough to buy this and talk to a rep don't mention you have this on it, or you be screwed.

I've had my PS3 on for about 11 hours (downloaded games while sleeping) and it's right by my bed stays quiet and it was just as warm as it normally is after about 1-2hrs of playing.

Besides all that, why the hell would you want your PS3 any bigger. This looks like it adds about two inches at the back and 4 inches on the top/side (depending on how you place it).

It seems to fit nicely, but I really don't think a cooler is necessary for the PS3. It's quite and reliable, why tack something onto it? I run Folding@Home overnight all of the time and have had no problems whatsoever with overheating.

It does get hot after a while, but it does a great job of pushing the heat out. I wouldn't want to risk messing with that.

I got one when i first got my ps3 about a year and a half ago, i only used for a lil bit than i heard that it will accutualy do more harm than good. I was told that sence the intercooler is ran by the power cord for the ps3 that the ps3 has less power and it will strain to run normally. i havent had it on for a year now and it just sits in my desk collecting dust.
