Playstation 3 helping to rid the world of disease photo

Sony is finally putting their expensive Playstation 3 to good use with the newest Japanese update 1.6 which includes Sony's newest application, Folding Home which allows users to use their Playstation 3 as part of a distributed computing network to support Stanford University’s protein rendering project.

Basically what that means is Stanford University will be able to use the power of thousands of Playstation 3s around the world to study the folding and unfolding of human proteins which in turn could lead to cures for diseases like Cancer, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

The Playstation 3 is 20 times faster than a standard PC which means the system will allow scientists to study the proteins in real time and from any angle. Once the update is available in North America, Playstation 3 owners will only have to click on the Folding Home icon and the program will automatically load if the system is idle and still connected to the internet.

Users will even be able to study the proteins themselves if they wish to help the cause. The update also includes a zoom tool for web browsing and the ability to download items in the background while playing a game or movie.

To view the program in action, check out this video.

Finally nice to see people accepted the fact that video games are the answer to all the world's problems instead of just being the cause of them.

Thanks GodLen for the tip

I gotta admit this is pretty cool, the Wii and 360 should do something similar, cause I thought the Wii had that Wiiconnect24 or whatever thing...

What was that? I'm too busy caring about Cod of War to care about people in need.

@ pooper

Yeah, but though WiiConnect24 would be useful, Wii's modest computing power makes it horribly inefficient for this kind of application, while the PS3 is much more practical.

And somewhere, all Gore is rolling over in his oxygen chamber thinking of all the baby kittens that will be burned up by the energy producing, global warming machines to run the ultra powerful CELL processors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Seriously people, turn off your Playstations when you don't use them. I say this, and I think Al Gore is an idiot, and gleefully drive a vehicle that gets 12 MPG. But, there is a limit..

That is truly incredible. But wouldn't having that application running all the time increase the probability of PS3's breaking down? And probably increase your power bill significantly?

Well if you pay $600 for a gaming console, it might as well do medical research for Stanford University.

... wait what?

Call me a cynic, but the system is becoming popular for EVERYTHING except it's game library, no?

yes it has been available for the PC but with the PS3's Cell it can fold faster and display the folding in full 3D where on a computer it's slower

Now all Sony needs to do is release that next patch that fills that Cancerous, Parkonson's-spreading hole in it's Player Base, Public Relations, and Game Development departments, and Sony just might have the next-gen Nintendo 64, and not the nex-gen Jaguar.
Also, Cocks.

"The Playstation 3 is 20 times faster than a standard PC" - what's a "standard" PC? Is there such a thing?

I think the original video I got the info from meant the standard super computer, but I prefer not to put words in that I'm not sure about

Are there any other details about the update. Not to seem cold hearted, helping people is good and all, but can i listen to a god damn song while I play a game now?

*waits for a no*
