Hey look! Another PlayStation 3 firmware update! Looks like we're up to version 2.60, which Sony just announced is on its way to consoles this week.
Available on January 21 (tomorrow!), 2.60 adds support for the new Photo Gallery application, which gives users a fancier way of organizing and viewing photos stored on the PS3. Additionally, the new update includes support for DivX 3.11, so you can sleep well knowing those movies and television shows your pirating will play nice with your PS3.
Last but not least, guest browsing for the PlayStation Store is now enabled. That means you won't need to sign in or create an account to browse the demos, videos, game content and more. But considering it's free to sign up, you might as well just go ahead and do that.
The official PlayStation Blog has a nice little video of Sony's Eric Lempel giving a demo of the new firmware update, with a focus on the new Photo Gallery. I've embedded it above, so you don't have to go anywhere, Dr. Lazy Pants.
I'm glad Sony's pushing all these updates. Since getting a PS3 I've found that it really is more than a games console :)
I've used the photo gallery more than the Wiis, and the Planet Earth Audio Visualizer is freakin sweet (to the point I would pay for more of the same!).
Though one thing I wish they could sort out:
Having custom themes is awesome. Though I end up changing the background on each one because you can't edit the font colour (or make them larger). Would it be too much effort, just so we can enjoy themes in their bright-glory?
dang, that photo gallery is really beast and great... to bad 99% of ps3 users (including me) will never use it. I love so many of these random things sony is doing but I wish they would put a lot more of that great effort into things that we will actually use... LIKE MORE AVATARS, haha.
@zanthox Well, the PSN really needs more avatars, no joke. we have some game characters, some weird insects, an hippo, poop, circles... not the best selections. I'd ask for custom ones, but it'd be a censorship nightmare
I wouldn't mind seeing something like this on the PSP. Surely, the extra horsepower they started packing in with the 2000 would let them at least do a scaled-version down of it to make picture browsing less awkward. But nooooo, all our updates do is patch exploits and let us search Google from the Home menu.
don't need a firmware update to get new avatars. i've had mine since i went online and have only seen one other person with it. i wanted to change it after that but i didn't.
The effort they are putting into a photo gallery just makes me sad, the original way to look pics was totally sufficient. How about getting companies to support your already existing features such as in game screen shots, Keyboard and mouse, maybe even some trophies. Its great to have a bunch of features, its even better if you make something that will actually be used.
all 5 of them? which 5? just the mainstream games you were told to buy? i have more than 5 games and a few of them aren't the most wanted for the system but that don't mean they ain't good and fun to play.
and everyday shooter sucks compared to magic ball or crash commando. hell, i've played more linger in shadows then everyday shooter.
Personally, I don't think you can really pirate TV shows. If downloading TV shows were illegal, then VCRs would be outlawed. If you SELL them, that's another thing.
Also, I wish we'd actually get a good update for once. This really doesn't seem like much of a huge thing.

Magnalon took my post.

Apparently the rumors of the next firmware to add backwards compatibility for PS2 again were false once more.
Thanks for the heads up!
