PlayStation 3 Fallout 3 DLC delayed until September photo

We’re constantly reminded that games take time to make and the good ones can take even longer than we’d like. Downloadable content is no longer the exception to this rule. Earlier this afternoon, Bethesda Softworks announced that PlayStation 3 Fallout 3 DLC wouldn’t be arriving until late September.

In a posting on the official PlayStation blog, Bethesda production director Ashley Cheng said Bethesda is “knee deep in testing” and hope to “have the first DLC out by the end of September” as opposed to the June release we expected. “Keep in mind that not only do we need to test each DLC on PS3,” she continued, explaining the delay, “we also need to test each DLC when used in conjunction with each of the other DLC, as well as all of them together, along with the entire original game.”

As for that first bit of DLC, it won’t be ‘Operation: Anchorage.’ In a move that makes total sense, Bethesda has opted to release ‘Broken Steel’ first. ‘Broken Steel’ expands the core game, allowing players to play after the original conclusion and continue exploring the Wasteland. 'Operation: Anchorage' is a good bit of content, but quite shallow in comparison.

“Once we release Broken Steel,” Cheng said, “we’ll have a better idea when the other DLC will be coming and will let you know specifics.”

Delays blow, sure, but Bethesda is playing cautious and making sure everything plays nice with each other before dumping it all on PlayStation Network. Good for them. The last thing PS3 Fallout 3 players need is broken content.

It's sad that developers don't try for both at once; PS3 seems to get the shaft more often than not. Here's to the PS3 getting it - eventually...that's sad.

Better getting it later instead of living with the issues they had at the beginning.

@shadokatReign: if by sad you mean, a lot harder to program for one than the other because one of them is a straight pc port and the other has a completely different architecture.

also, @Midgetsnowman: you *do* realize that the "harder to program" work is already done with the release of the game when it comes to DLC, right? Thanks to modern science and technology, the additional content works with, nay, depends on the original coding done for the boxed game.

If it means that Bethsoft takes some time to iron out the kinks in the inevitable software updates to RUN the DLC.. that's cool with me, though.

The DLC debacle has really soured the PS3 user base toward Bethesda. Just browsing the Playstation Blog comments will give you an idea. I think this whole situation has been poorly handled by Bethesda from the get go, and I hope they learn their lesson about exclusivity deals in the future.

I expect the PS3 DLC to sell rather poorly because a) it's coming out way too late (a lot of people never expected DLC, so they sold or traded in their copy long ago), b) too much resentment among PS3 owners about being left out in the cold for so long and c) too many other great games coming out around that time that people will be playing instead. Bethesda will only have themselves to blame for poor sales.

If they sell poorly, it kind of paints a bad light on the PS3 even more.

"Whiiiiine...whiiiiiine...*doesn't buy anyway*" results in "Well, little sales and tons of whining fanboys? Why bother?". Of course, I'd imagine Bethesa WOULD finish up releasing the DLCs on it, but it still reflects badly.

Wasn't their plan to release the DLC packs every two weeks? They do realize that at that rate they won't be done releasing DLC until the Game of the Year Edition hits with all of the DLC included? Hell, you'll probably be able to pick up GOTY for $40 by the time the last pack comes out. It's ridiculous to even bother putting out the DLC at this point. I'd rather pay the extra $10 (assuming GOTY is full priced) to have all of the content right there on the disc than to have to worry about filling up my hard drive with that crap and slogging through the terrible PSN download history if I ever deleted it and then wanted to re-download.

There was almost no point in releasing it in June and by September there's no point at all. This is as useless as still having Shivering Isles up for $24.99 when you can buy Oblivion GOTY (with Shivering Isles included) for $19.99.

They're cool contents, but I still don't get it. On PC, at least, the DLCs are just a collection of resources, a few object and cell definitions, and a shitload of scripts. None of them platform dependant. But then, it does have basically the best modding ability ever, and the PS3/360 versions don't, so maybe they do them differently. Either way, BS is awesome, and well worht the wait.
