PlayStation 2 turns nine today, we're feeling old photo

Sony has pinged us to remind of us of our own mortality, and to tell us that the PlayStation 2 is nine-years-old.

That's right, the system made its North American debut on October 26, and for me, it marked my first DVD player. I remember going to my local EB Games, bringing back the unit to my college dorm room, and popping in SSX (remember those blue-bottom CD-based discs?) for the first time. It was glorious.

Unfortunately, I don't think I bought another PS2 game for at least another year after I got the system at launch. Instead, I happily played my Dreamcast, waiting for something to happen on Sony's console. And then it did. Big time. I'm not going to attempt to list all of the incredible games and franchises that the PS2 gave birth to... but I'm not going to stop you from telling us your best PS2 memories.

So, go for it!

Yep, I got mine on launch day by pure chance, I was on pre-order for the second shipment because I waited to long, but the day came and eb called me around 6pm that night and said if I wanted mine to come get one because people weren't showing up to grab their pre-orders, I went and bought it and a copy of Timesplitters.

I remember my parents got me a PS2 bundle from EB Games that came with Madden 2001, SSX, a Game Shark, and a DVD remote. I remember I wasn't suppose to open it until my birthday, but I was an impatient bastard and I opened it up anyway. My parents were pissed, but I still got to play it. Ah, memories.

Wow. I remember buying a PS2 in late 2001, with my only game a JP copy of Dead or Alive 2. I waited around until mod chips came out that allowed me to use swap tricks with Devil May Cry to play *ahem* backup games.

Oh, those halcyon days.

Nick I love you. SSX was quite possibly one of the best gaming memories of recent years. I got mine for 60 Dollars more from this guy outside the shop "who happend to have an extra one". it wasn't a scam and many fun hours were spent afterwards playing Smugglers Run and Ridge Racer.

Any of you guys remember Smugglers Run? Was pretty sweet back in the day.

Believe it or not, I've been playing games since NES but the PS2 was my first console that I owned. Before that i had to go to my friend's house or my cousin's to play games. I had to work to get this, and i was worthed. The first game i played on it, Metal Gear Solid 3... epic xD

I was starting college and had already spent all of my fellowship money on a t.v., dreamcast, and video camera. No one in my family could afford a ps2 when it came out, so I just had to sit there and watch awesome game after awesome game come out as the Dreamcast game releases slowly started fading away. I was sad because I thought the Dreamcast was freaking awesome.

It wasn't until 2002 came around and I went abroad for a semester in college. I realized that the study abroad program in Wales was mainly just to experience another culture, and I wasn't expected to actually go to any classes. One of my roommates had a PS2 so I took it upon myself to get caught up on all the games I'd missed. It was awesome.

I got my first PS2 by winning a call in contest I saw on Toonami. It came with a copy of Jak & Daxter. That was a glorious day, my friend.

Oh man, 9 years already? I remember playing the first Street Fighter game on it and remember blowing my mind.

When I got one, my first games were Twisted Metal Black and Dark Cloud. Good times. Which reminds me...I'm never to going to get around to beating FFXII.

Its funny. Kojima made me buy a PS2 with the ZOE / MGS2 demo and he also made me buy a PS3 with MGS4. I guess I owe him my life. maybe

I bought one near launch in anticipation for mgs2 and GT2000 (gran turismo 3).
I still think that the ps2 has done more for gaming than what the SNES did.

Amazingly enough, PS2 still makes current gen consoles look like overpriced doorstops.

Maybe I'll get a next gen console next year, when RPG finally start rolling out for them. Borderlands and Demon's Souls are cool and Imma let you guys finish them but Persona 4 is one of the best RPGs of all time.

ahh ps2. i'm amazed mine even works still. i got mine a little late, i think it was around the first price drop, whenever that was. i sold my gamecube and all my games to my cousin for just enough to get the system and a copy of Shinobi. part of me wishes i didn't get into trading my games because i'd probably have a pretty bad ass rpg collection. but yeah...i had never owned a ps1 before, so i promptly went out and got ff vii, ix, grandia, legend of dragoon...mm...so many late nights that turned into early mornings that turned into mid afternoons and so forth.

i remember i would purposely try to get sick in highschool so i could have an excuse to sit around playing rpgs all day. that being said i still havent even scratched the surface of persona3, dont even own persona4 and have never played through (though i've certainly played) any of the god of war games.

also, beyond good and evil, killer7, sly cooper, psychonauts...happy birfday ps2.

My brother bought it from a friend of his a year after it came out. The first game I played was Orphen. At the time, I thought it was amazing.

I laughed when I saw the It Is Your Birthday banner from The Office.

The PS2 is right up there with the SNES in terms of having an absolutely amazing library of games. And thanks to Persona 4, my PS2 is currently seeing more play than any of my current-gen systems.

I can't believe it's been nine years.

It feels like it was just yesterday when I popped in Twisted Metal Black for the first time, wowed by its astonishing graphics and dark storyline.

Ahhhh, nostalgia.

holy crap, 9 years. That's almost 10. Which is almost 15 years, close to 25, which turns to 50, etc. (50 years!)

I got my ps2 shortly after the release of ffx. I had asked my dad to buy it with full knowledge that he would ignore me and my request, as per usual. But for some reason the old man came through this time. I was blown away by the beauty of the game, and in awe of ps2 for being able to showcase such eye candy. Remember walking to the village in Besaid? The waterfall and the moving grass and trees <3. Also, Kimahri first meeting Tidus? epic. I love you ps2. xoxo.

If every console had a library as varied as that one and even half as many games then there would be no console wars.

my ps2 won't play any blue bottom discs without sounding like a jet turbine caught in a tornado. Which means I just have to stick to the regular games.

I remember really wanting a PS2 leading up to the launch. Oh, man, this was back when EGM was THE MAGAZINE to read. I was so excited but so broke. My fiancee (now my wife) was able to scrape up enough of our money to buy the system. Oh, I LOVE THAT WOMAN! She was sick but she rounded up some old couch cushions and a few blankets, grabbed a bottle of nyquil and got us promptly over to our local Target. They wouldn't let us line up until after closing but some people were already there just chilling in chairs.

A few of my friends came out with their blankets and cushions and we totally set up a cushion fort to stay warm in. It drizzled for about an hour that night around 1:00 am and everyone in line was trying to decide whether to stay or leave. A few people in the front of the line left with the reasoning that they didn't want to catch pneumonia and die for a PS2. We decided to hang out for another 30 minutes and see if it the drizzle let up...which it did.

I didn't sleep a wink and when morning rolled up on us it seemed like forever before the Target employees came out to hand us tickets. They said they had 50 PS2's and there were about 200 people in line. I cautiously counted everyone in front of us. My friends and I ended up being tickets 44, 45, and 46. My wife did not take a ticket; we're not those dicks that buy up more than they need to turn a profit. If it wasn't for those people that left in the middle of the night I wouldn't have been able to get a PS2 that day. Suckers!

I bought SSX and Orphen...or something...and we played the hell out of SSX that day. It was my first DVD player too and I ran that Playstation into the ground. It broke on me after 2 years with Disc Read Errors and I went through 2 more before finding a PS2 that didn't break. Oh, I love the PS2!! I LOVE IT!!

My father bought me my PS2 in Q2 or Q3 of 2001 (I was 15ish years old. Wow.), and my mother purchased Gran Turismo 3 shortly thereafter. My parents are awesome.

Also, I know I am not the only one who bought the MGS2 demo that came with a game (<3 <3 <3 ZOE!).

PS2 #3 is still going strong.

My fondest PS2 memory is when I was trying to repair my second PS2 fat, and i couldn't get it fixed. The stupid piece of crap could only play PS1 games (and I used it primary to play CV: SOTN). After a good three months of working on it in my dorm, it was time to move out, and I'd had enough. I was on the third floor, and my roommate (who I had a love/hate relationship with) was outside my window. With a yell of "suck on this, mofo!" I lobbed my second PS2 fat out the window, missing my roommate, but sending it smashing into the cement.
It was all good until I saw something horrible: a disc popped out of the destroyed drive and rolled across the cement and into the grass. I'd forgotten to take Castlevania out!
Luckily my roommate saw the humor in it and didn't steal my game, and it still actually works just fine! I just remember the downright horror I felt when I realized I threw one of my favorite games out the third floor window onto cement.

SSX and Tekken Tag were my first PS2 games. The original console (purchased on release day at our local Target) is still running in my son's room (Ok, I've broken it down 2 or 3 times and cleaned disk holder and adjusted the laser tracking). I'm surprised it didn't burst into flames the first month after GTA Vice City came out....
