PlayOn video streaming service hits the Wii photo

This generation of gaming consoles has welcomed in video/movie entertainment in full force. Unfortunately, Nintendo's Wii, despite having the largest install base, does not have much in the way of non-gaming entertainment options. That changes with the introduction of PlayOn, a video streaming application.

The service has already worked fine for users of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but today Wii joins the party this week. Services like Netflix, Amazon, YouTube and Hulu are piped through a PC into the console by way of a $40 piece of software. New York Times says that a beta service launches tomorrow. There will be a 14-day trial for you to check it out.

If you'd like to sign up for the beta, head here. Let us know how it goes.

I've been using PlayOn for a few months on a 360 in one room and a PS3 in another. It's completely eliminated the need for cable, saving almost $100 a month. I mean, it allows you to run Netflix on the PS3. 360 exclusive my ass. Homemade plugins open up a whole bunch of other channels too, like MTV and Gametrailers. Absolutely fantastic.

Paying for the license was the best $20 I've spent in a long time (there was a 50% off sale at the beginning of the summer). And it's super easy to use; if you've got the least bit of tech savvy, don't hesitate to try it out.

I've been using this for months, it's awesome. I watch all my netflix instant queues on my ps3 in very high quality. Also works as a general media server for videos, pictures, and music. It's all I use, and is worth the license fee. Also lets you stream youtube, hulu, south park, and adult swim (last 2 need to be custom downloaded).

Of course, can't have a Wii article with at least one idiot coming in and bashing the console into the dirt.

People keep complaining that the Wii doesn't do what the other consoles do, and now that it does, why not complain about it some more?

People will always complain about Nintendo. Even when its a good thing, they'll still complain about it somehow. Its like they have a inferiority complex!

PlayOn is a danged smart product. I finally got a chance to see it in use on a friend's PS3 not too long ago, and I came away fairly impressed. On the Wii? That makes the system a fairly beefy multimedia unit. Utterly unnecessary for me, but nevertheless, sign me up.

I just downloaded playon to try on my ps3. It is ok, but is kind of limiting. You could just buy the neccesary cables and adapters and use your tv as a second moniter. That way you are not dependent on this program. Plus, that 40 dollar fee for this program doesnt even give you the new updated versions! It says they can charge you again for those.

I'm trying PlayOn right now but my issue is that its not listing all episodes of shows on HULU. Like ...take Naruto for instance. There are 220 eps listed on HULU...however my PS3 via PlayOny only shows 115

Outside of that its VERY easy to use which most "non techy" types might enjoy :D

Oh ho! Here's how you get something right on the Wii--commandeer it and make sure Nintendo's not in the room while you're working on it!

Hulu and Netflix? Living in Canada makes this useless for me already.

PlayOn is quality...I've had issues with it on the PS3 because of the high bitrate it defaults to, but it's worked great on the Xbox. I'll see if the interface on the Wii looks good and maybe use that if so. As bluetom00 mentioned, the community plugins make it worthwhile.

PlayOn is awesome. This is good news for those who only have a Wii. But since I have a PS3, I'll just stick with that.

Wait... I live in Canada, so this would be totally useless to me, right? I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but Hulu and all that (admitedly cool-looking) shit doesn't work here, right?
