[Editor's note: Zulu ends this month's Monthly Musing topic with Persona 3. -- CTZ]

Well Hell, I guess motivation has hit me at quite an awkward time. There's only one day left for this musing. Despite it, I think I'll be able to write something out. So yes, "Playing With Yourself", quite an easy phrase to poke fun at as an innuendo. We all know that it's quite funny, but I'll try my best to restrain from taking the low road.

I enjoy playing games with others, and I usually have a much more exciting and fun time doing so then playing alone. For me, the outside experience surrounding the game is what I take in and cherish most when I play a game with others. A one player game however tends to pull me inside, the experience within the game. Multiplayer or not, memories are made despite the number of folks on my couch.

The last game I played by myself was Persona 3. After 70 hours played over a good quarter of a year, I've finally finished it. I was extremely surprised when I found myself picking up this game every few days to play for a few hours here and there. A 70 hour game usually isn't something I'd commonly commit myself too. Persona 3 though, hit me like a sack of bricks.

It was so fresh, so innovative, and creative. I've never played anything like it in my life, well except for a few elemental parts of it that flashes me back to Pokemon, Harvest Moon, and Final Fantasy. Persona 3 felt like an extraordinarily beautiful fusion between all three of those games, with unique ambitious ideas and a personality to call it's own.

The most rewarding parts in Persona 3 to me were the interactions between my character and the ones around him. Learning about the mystery behind the game's plot that reveled itself further and further from month to month, and learning more about each individual character you acquaint yourself with along the way. It really kept me curious and engaged to the game throughout. There just seems to be so much content and depth squeezed into it, especially when it comes to characters. 70 hours just won't cut it if you want to see what makes everyone tick in the end. That's if, you're not using GameFAQS.

If this game were anything besides solely being a one player game, personally, I believe it would have lost a lot of it's charm. I remember playing it when a roommate of mine was seated on the couch next to me. I wasn't embarrassed or anything about playing it, but I do remember not being able to focus as well on what was exactly going on at the time when things were going on and feeling as if I were robbing myself of pleasure by not giving the game my full attention.

I enjoyed Persona 3 quite well, but what is it that makes "playing with myself" a little more appealing then "playing with others". I think I've only vaguely scrapped the top so far. When it comes to playing alone, I feel. When I am playing a game that holds itself up well in standards of quality, was made to capture the player's curiosity, and pull on their heartstrings, no multiplayer experience I've ever had has ever come close to the emotional depth that a great one player game can provide me. When a game asks you to invest yourself emotionally, the joy and pain that comes from that interactive experience seems to magnify every part about it in a better light, engrossing you deeper and deeper within.

Emotional investment can make or break a game with me. If I am committed deeply to a game, I'll usually turn a blind eye or forget about many minor or sometimes major flaws in a game. Persona 3 is not without it's flaws, but I could care less about most of them. I've fallen in love. Selective ignorance like this is really what makes fans fans and folks that hate certain games and fans angrier. Nerds will always be there to point out flaws and faults in everything ever created. There's no doubt about that. The entire Internet is pretty much a pissing party about anything you hold close.

What I'm trying to say is, that playing with yourself is a very special, intimate, and personal thing. The Internet can be a hard place to express and understand that kind of love. Next time you feel the arousal of eagerness, as you wrap your warm throbbing hands around a controller, in anticipation of releasing yourself in ultimate joy, cherish it. Masturba -- , I mean playing videogames alone is a great way to express love to yourself.

In the words of Whitney Houston, "Learning to love yourself, It is the greatest love of all"

I think it's almost guaranteed that this blog will get promoted. I picked up Persona 3: FES last month, and I've had similar feelings. I honestly felt a connection with each of the characters, something that I haven't experienced in a game since Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII.

Good blog.

I planned on writing a similar blog for this month's musing, but you did a pretty good job getting at the great single player aspect of Persona 3.

Try the 4th one, its even better with the main character/party member interactions.

But yea, I agree 100% with this blog.

I'm planning on buying Persona 4. I was going to buy it when it first came out, but I was still playing 3. I can't seem to find 4 anywhere in the real world now. I'll have to eventually order it online.

I'm not counting The Answer. The Journey however took me 70 hours. Right now, I'm taking a break before getting too deep into The Answer, I'm pretty burn't out with the Tartarus mazes.

I just finished P4 a few weeks ago, and P3 is just waiting for me to start. I absolutely LOVE the Persona series. Can't wait till 5 comes out.

Good post! Love this game, for a lot of the same reasons you do. 4 is great, but 3 has a special place.

I don't know, listening to the Giant Bomb playthrough of Persona 4 makes it seem like playing that with a friend would be hilarious. But, I guess that would make it fun for different reasons.

Controlling only one character in Persona 3 and controlling the entire party in Persona 4 are entirely different experiences.

I tried playing Persona 4... I got mostly through the first dungeon, then realized that I should have chosen an easier difficulty. So I started the game over again.

No joke:

From title screen to first significant battle (between yourself and Yousuke's persona) took 1 hour, 15 minutes. This is mashing X to get through the dialog as quickly as possible.

During this entire period, it's all dialog. The only character control you have is walking in your house to a save point and a 30 second preview of what combat is like.

I know the game is praised highly for it's story, but I can only stomach so much of it.

Then you must never have watched a movie that wasn't action..?

On topic:
Persona 3 is a great game, as is Persona 4. I am kind of add when it comes to games, I'll play them for a while, then drop it and play another game (For example I haven't played P4 since middle-late December) partly because of being busy. But Persona 3 really kept my interest for a while and I would've beaten it if I hadn't watched my roommate play the last 1/2 of the game or so.

I guess my point is if you're not into rpgs, give Persona a try and you might just end up liking yourself a little more.

Funny, I'm playing Persona 3 as I'm typing this (well, not at the exact same time, but you know what I mean) and I feel the exact same way. The character interaction is so awesome and sucks you right in... I got the same feelings from Valkyrie Profile (PS1) and Star Ocean 2 (also PS1)... those two RPGs are in my top 3 fave.

To tell you how much I loved it, the neighbors heard me one time cuz I was so happy I finally got in bed with Yuko... and if playing with yourself is so good that your neighbors hear it, you're doing something RIGHT!

Thank you Atlas...

Tried Persona 2, was pretty good, but not amazing.

Tracked down a copy of P3: FES earlier this year, blown away.

Got my P4 pre-ordered.

Only time I regret being English is having to wait for amazing games.

P3: FES is pretty common for you Americans right?

I've got to the third or fourth month in Persona 3, and I am highly enjoying it. I have an issue with the 'game over when the main character falls', but otherwise, it's great. :OD

Even though I've been playing GTA IV, I had to set up the PS2 just to see if I could create a social link with Bebe, then that shows how special the game is to me.

I can honestly say that this game is better than any of Square-Enix big-budget flash-fests. It didn't bog you down with any gimmicky gameplay (i.e. TWEWY, Crisis Core, The Last Remnant). The setting and atmosphere was certainly one-of-a-kind: hip, post-modern, and very Japanese. But most of all, the attention to story and character was just incredible.

My god, I hate that too! I'm like "Fuck, if you gus can get a medicinal powder, you couldn't think of a REVIVAL BEAD!?!" Even when they have Recarm, you still fall and game over. Sucks ass.

Damn I love this game...

@Shin_Ra

No. I guess they are all in some form of a timeline, but you really don't need to play them in order to understand anything major. They're arranged pretty much like the Zelda series.

For Persona 3, no you don't have to have played the previous Persona games to enjoy it. At the very most, characters from previous games are mentioned only as throw away references when Trish (the healing fairy from the previous games, but a kind of TV gossip columnist or something in this one) is doing her little segments on the TV. You can skip them entirely and won't really miss a thing.

For Persona 4, I haven't played very far into it at all yet, but I think some side characters from P3 do show up (at least one that I know of for sure, well aside from Igor who is in pretty much all of them), but I don't know how big a role they play at all. I don't think it's very big though. Maybe someone else can say for sure?
