Playing Borderlands on Xbox 360? Shouldn't be? BANNED! photo

It's a sad fact that every major videogame release will be up on torrent sites before they hit retailers. It's usually "hardcore" gamers doing the torrenting too, while at the same time wondering why publishers don't want to make games for them anymore. In any case, if you're playing Borderlands and Forza 3 when you shouldn't be, rest assured that Microsoft is watching you, and is readying the banhammer for action.

"You know, when you play a pre-release title on LIVE when I know you shouldn’t have it, it’s not hard for me to figure out," boasts Xbox Live Director of Policy and Enforcement Stephen Toulouse. "Don’t worry folks, anyone who bought a copy early is ok. In general, if you got a receipt, play away. These are illegit copies we’re hitting."

So be warned. If you're a filthy pirate, Microsoft is watching you. It does seem strange that Toulouse brings up receipts though. Are they simply going to ban everybody playing the game, and then ask for proof of purchase after the fact? Will Toulouse be knocking on your door with the MS gestapo, demanding to see your papers? Who knows? What I do know is that I need to be playing this game last week.

Alot of Best Buys broke the Borderlands street date and those who own a legit copy are still getting banned from what I reading, so if you get it early make sure you keep that receipt, or just don't play online pre-release.

They probably still ban you even if you got it early, you just have to email them with a picture of the receipt I reckon'.

Here's the main question I'm wondering...

Do they check for WHEN the copy was originally played, or if the copy is played on Xbox Live before it is released? I know there's been instances where I get games before the street date (go go friends who work at Gamestop!) and I'm always nervous about playing them. It'd be nice to know if I can just unplug from Xbox Live until the actual street date or if I have to avoid playing it altogether.

You know I often wonder how much effect pirating has on the console wars. I mean for a pirate Xbox360, cheap DVD to burn, cheap burner, ect ect,. PS3 on the other hand the resources don't even exist to pirate the games. So for pirates Xbox360 would be a no brainer. We all know the level of piracy has on PSP, PSPs sell well but the game don't.

HAHA, this totally proves my point that 360 pirating is worse than PC because the 360 version always shows up on a torrent site before the PC one.

I think the idea of the MS Gestapo is fairly hilarious, instead of the traditional Swastikas on their armbands they have old school windows logos (or 360 Logo) in red, black, and white. Banging on your door at 3am asking for your papers or kicking down your door and confiscating your 360.

Now If only the repair service was as prompt and efficient as that.

Its really very simple. They let some retailers sell it early and they know how many copies are sold. When people play it early and they are out of the area of the retailers that get to sell it early or there are more people playing in those areas than it sold then people get banned. Its all done with technology; no one needs to even get off of their asses to get this all done.

Also if you play a game before the retail date and you pirated it you deserve to get banned for being an idiot. I know someone thats had a modded 360 since day one and he isn't stupid so he hasn't been banned.

I some times get retail games though a friend for free about a week before the release date but i always get told "don't be a dick and play them on live before they come out or you will be ban". PS3 on the other hand it's a different story.

Apparently a bunch of Best Buy stores accidentally released Borderlands early so a fair number of those Borderlands gamers may well have legit copies. Chances are that they know which locations got the early release of the game though and will be watching areas where it wasn't released early.

I love pirates. They refuse to pay for a developer's hard work and immense effort, then complain about the state of the industry and how no one cares about how THEY feel about games.

I hope every single one of them eats a ban. I hope they upload something to your firmware that bricks your system you filthy pirates.

If they're at going to steal (or infringe copywrights) they should at least do it with a bit of style. What do they expect if they're playing before they could have possibly been legally online.

Actually, as far as antipiracy tactics go, this one seems like it would be fairly effective. I know, having your Live account shut down is a pain, but it's better than switching to all DLC or sending out a firmware update that bricks consoles. This way, even if you have an early copy, there's a way to recover (other than sueing, I mean).

Playing offline won't matter because the cheevos are still tied to the date. Unless you set your date manually, but then every time you go on Live it will auto-reset your time and date :)

How did you get those cheevos on release date if that is in the future?

They can't ban people then ask for the receipt, otherwise the entire gaming press will be kicked off of Xbox Live. You don't get a receipt with review copies, and the Forza 3 discs have been out for weeks now.

I feel sorry for anyone who happens to get the game from a retailer who breaks the release date.

i do believe piracy is wrong , music i can understand mostly students and people not willing to spend money on that 1 good song in a pack of 12 crap songs( not counting itunes downloads here ,they sound like someone recorded it at home , they sound horrible compared to cds) but games!! cmon it takes ages and ages for talented people to comeup with a game , if its good its replayed over and over as well so the mney u spend on it is soooooooooo worth it i cant see the point in not buying a game if u do like the demo cuz thats just like " i want it all and im a cheap ass who wants stuff free all the time " not fair to be hnest , Im all against game piracy cuz a game is a lot more than a fad of the moment music video or a horrible blink and ull miss movie that people download

I'm wondering if playing it offline will be ok. I know that an xbox will keep up with when a game was played. I guess fiddling with the system time and such may be good, but I would rather take no chances and just wait till release day.

Be careful about letting people know about your sources for pre release games (especially if it's something like a friend getting it for you) Consequences at most retail places for doing that is quite serious.

Not only is it a good thing for the gamers (bigger space for better games) but also for the developers (too big for any average human to pirate). WIN/WIN

@360COMIC - you moron.
I'm sure MS can happily survive without your filthy lucre, especially if it means you can't perpetuate further piracy.
If you pirate 360 games you're a complete tw@. Games are cheap enough for anyone to afford, when you consider 2nd-hand prices. If you can't afford them, get yer ass off the couch and earn some cash you goodfernothing waste of space.
@DanCiti - that goes for you too. And anyone else who laments their disappointment in MS's actions.

You believe that? where is your proof.

@MesonW

You believe what you wrote? 360 games are a rip off compared to the same game on pc.

@Corak

Yep stupid rules like no implying swear words even **** would get you suspended even though they have tools on the xbox for parents to use to stop children or for over sensitive adults that block everything.
