Player rating system completely overhauled for Madden NFL 10 photo

Every year, the Madden ratings are the subject of much discussion and controversy among gamers and NFL players alike; both groups tend to have strongly held opinions on how they turn out. You can bet that Randy Moss is going to have something to say if his SPD (speed) rating isn't somewhere up above a 95, for example.

But like videogame review scores, Madden ratings have been subject to some inflation. Just like a 7/10 for [insert publication/site here] might be a 5/10 on Destructoid, players’ attributes in the videogame franchise have artificially been kept high because of their ranges (for example, in Madden NFL 09, the route running rating for a wide receiver could be as high as 99, but only as low as 62).

That’s all being changed for Madden NFL 10. EA Tiburon has “stretched out the ratings,” as game designer Donny Moore put it. The team is calling it “a new philosophy,” and it really seems like it’s going to significantly improve the quality of gameplay that Madden provides. Basically, the lower limits for ratings have been dropped -- this year, the WR route running rating can range from 35-99.

A major consequence of this can be seen in the precipitous drop of an “average” player: “Your Joe Average linebacker who was 80 OVR is now dropped down to 70.” Just like when 1UP switched over to giving games letter grades instead of numerical ones, Madden NFL 10 is going to force gamers to completely rethink attributes. I imagine that there will be some controversy when the full ratings are release later this year, but we’ll have to see.

Haha, sports nerds!

I'm almost certain one of the reasons why Gridiron football is so popular in the States is because of the avalanche of statistics involved with the game. People just seem to love it when you can reduce an activity to numbers and values.

Heh, nice picture Samit. As an Eagles fan I find it greatly amusing and am in no way rubbing in the Eagles win over the Giants (Probably the second best game of the season after the Cowboys blowout in week 17). I havent bought a Madden since 07 (currently borrowing my roommates copy of 08 though) and I will probably pick up 10 if only cause a large number of my friends on Live have already committed to getting it. I like to hear that they're overhauling it though. Should make for a much more interesting experience...

@deiga:

No. Not even close. But it's obvious you know nothing of football if you are calling it "Gridiron football." So please don't make sweeping generalizations about something you don't have a clue about.

The player ratings weren't the problem in Madden. The problem is the team ratings, and how they affect the play of each time. In the NFL they say "any team, can beat anyone any given day." However in Madden (every version) I've never felt that to be true. For instance if you pick a team with a low rating you're almost guaranteed to lose. What I'd like to see is the overall ratings for each team dropped, and just highlight the teams strengths based on the teams personnel. Also, I'd like to see the gameplay evolve to the point that the actual field play is determined not by the overall rating of the teams, but by the players rating, and his fatigue. Randy Moss can't run top speed every play. On Madden he's top speed all game long.
