Play your PS1 discs on your PSP via PS3's remote play photo

We heard the news from the PlayStation Boards, but we had to try it for ourselves.

It works! If you're sporting the latest firmware versions for your PS3 and PSP (2.10 and 3.80 respectively), you can pop a PS1 disc into your PS3 and play it on your PSP... wirelessly!

Owners of both systems already know the joys of having your video, audio, some gameplay, and PS3 internet in the palm of your hands, but now your classic PS1 favorites join in the fun.

Our test included several games, and we have to say that you're better off with RPG and strategy games than you are with action or fighting titles; the delay screws up the timing. I was able to boot up some old favorites like Wild Arms, Lunar, Xenogears and many more, and each played totally fine.

To do this, simply insert a PS1 game into your PS3 and start the Remote Play app. Now select Remote Play in your PSP to bring up the PS3's XMB. Simply select the PS1 disc in the XMB as you normally would on your PS3 and begin playing.

Two more pictures are after the jump.

I'm selling my PSP if anyone would like to take advantage of this feature and you also happen to own a PS3.

@SpencersGifts:
BTW, I'm pretty sure with the 40gig ps3, the lack of wifi built in means you'd have to have it hard lined.

I'm pretty sure you haven't read up on what the 40gig ps3 is capable of. It comes with built-in a wifi adapter.

I think he was referring to the 20 gig to be honest.

But still, a dolt.

It's amazing to me how people post to the internet and start complaining about something they know nothing about, and don't even bother to do a quick google search to back up what they're saying. Boggles the mind, really. The internet is like, right in front of you! There's no reason to ask a question or state something blatantly inaccurate.

This is a great step for Sony, but it's something that we've had work around's for quite a bit, not for streaming data from PS3 to PSP, but playing PS1 games on our PSP. I doubt that these have any lifted restrictions that we'd be limited to by just running the game via POPS on the PSP 3.80, and sadly, some games load better on older versions of POPS (All the Final Fantasy games seem to run best on 3.30 or so), so I think I'll stick with running Popsloader. This is still a real nice feature, and I'm up for any form of a media extender!

I think it's great they got around to doing this. Should've been priority #1, to get the PS1 library onto the PSP.

Great stuff.

Also, some people here need to go learn shit before they type.

OMG some of you are so fucking stupid LMAO. But seriously this is just the beginning, next will be ps2 games then finally we'll be able to play our ps3 games straight from our psp anywhere in the world. Sony really does have a 10 year plan after all.

I don't know if it needed to be said or not, but it needs to be out there before someone screws this up as well. The 20GB PS3 CAN use remote play if you have a wireless router. I can and do just fine, just like the rest of ya that have built in wireless.

So, wait, can you walk away from the PS3 and take this with you?

Whats the point if you cant take it portable? If you have to sit in the same room as the PS3, why not just play it on the friggin TV.?

Caffeine, it's anywhere with WiFi. ANYWHERE. Across the globe will work.

Also, don't span Caffeine. He's a billion times more awesome than you.

Actually, stop the flaming in general. Someone was sticking to their opinion, someone responded, and that's that. No need to repeat his failure over and over.

Carry on my wayward son. There'll be peace when you are done.

don't you cry no more..... (?)

There's a major flaw in this however; you must own a PSP -AND- a PS3.

@ SpencersGifts - You are a fucking tool. Stop trolling and go play your 360.

Anyway, while I don't own any ps1 games anymore, it is still a cool feature. I just love remote play in general. Music and movies anytime at my work is awesome.

BlackDove - So wait, you think that streaming content from PS1 discs should be Sony's first priority? Ahead of, I dunno, getting back their PS2 compatibility, or improving video codecs and the such on your XMB? I don't know, something seems amiss about that.

This is a neat little feature, but by far, it's something that Sony never really needed to do, and it wasn't like the fan forums were like "ZMG, WE NEED TO STREAM DISCS TO OUR PSPS". This was kinda out of the blue.

Sooooo, instead of playing your game on your large tv with a playstation controller...you can play it all laggy and squished down to a tiny screen with crappy controls? No wonder they're failing the console war, what a retarded feature.

Some of you people worry me. No this feature isnt going to suddenly cause you to be MR POPULAR or MS SUPERMODEL but it will allow you to pop in a PSONE game (preferably a kick ass RPG-I've got FF8 in mine right now) head somewhere with WiFi and play whatever PSONE game you have in your PS3 on your PSP. I fail to see how this is a bad thing. Personally, as an RPG FREAK I am loving it!

Why is it that every other comment has someone asking if you have to play the PSP 100 ft. from the PS3? That's stupid. lol

READ THE INFO DUMMIES!

Wow, for readers on destructoid, there are tons of morons up there. Internet remote play is one of the two ways to connect to the ps3 from the psp. Who would want to do that in the same room anyway?

I do wonder though, for games like FFVII and VIII, when the player is asked to switch the disk, will it be seamless?

Yep - I've done this with my setup - while I was in the Ukraine, and my PS3 in Colorado. Basically just to show off to my buddy.

I don't think I'll be playing any PS1 games via this setup, but I heard that you can now button map - so PS3 games that support the feature are now usable (ie. Lair). Not that I really want to play Lair ever.

But it is kinda cool sitting in an airport in Frankfurt and deciding to watch some movie trailers for the fun of it streaming off your PS3 at home.

No, not something that will change the world, but it's a step toward how everything should work.

@Goblin - This would be 100x cooler if the PS3 let you rip the PS1 disk to its hard drive and then steam it that way or rip the disk to the memory stick of the PSP

Neat concept, but like Mxy said...what if I want to change disks?

Im out traveling and I gotta go to disk 2 of FFVII, well unless you can phone someone to walk over to the PS3 and swap out the disk, you are SOL.
