Play as Alucard the Vampire in the new Magicka expansion photo

Niero and I are currently in Stockholm, Sweden where Paradox Interactive is showing off their upcoming 2012 lineup. We're going to have a lot of coverage and video to bring you, but in the mean time we bring news of a Magicka expansion!

Magicka: The Other Side of the Coin is a "completely new take on the Magicka universe." You play as Alucard the Vampire and his Necromancer minions as you go up against the forces of good. There will be new environments, new enemies and one new challenge map. Additionally, Necromancers will be introduced to the PvP element of Magicka.

Magicka has been a breakout hit for Paradox and their most successful game to date. Paradox's Shams Jorjani revealed that Magicka has sold over 1.3 million copies since release. There has been over $4 million in sales of all the downloadable content to date. The most successful of the DLC has been the Vietnam expansion, moving over 500,000 units.

You can expect Magicka: The Other Side of the Coin sometime this Fall for just $3.99. We'll be going hands-on with the game a little later so expect coverage soon!

Waits for people to come in and say Konami has a copyright on Dracula backwards <3

@Magnalon

You have to admit... That image, despite the roguish mustache, is most certainly uncannily similar to Konami's Alucard...

They certainly aren't trying very hard to separate their version...

Pretty sure it goes under parody, if not, then Alucard originally appearead in Son of Dracula anyway, not Castlevania.

Im really happy with all the success these guys have had with Magicka. It had a bit of a rough start, but it really is a fantastic game.

@Sir Tobbli - yeah, but that's very much the design of Castlevania's Alucard, even if it's poorly drawn, lacks a sense of depth and has a mustache penciled on.

It's not even subtle.

Oh wait, it's fine, they just completely ripped of DRACULA's Symphony of the Night design http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/castlevania_sotn_conceptart_La8eU.jpg

Guess they thought it would be too obvious to directly copy Alucard.

Appalling bit of artwork to boot.

@Silent/Leisure
Hence the parody claim, it's fair-use. It's obviously meant to be a parody on the Castlevania character. This is how all the Movies-movies get away with completely ripp off designs and characters. And unless SOPA/PIPA passes, that fair-use law won't change.

Did everyone forget about this already?

These guys are masters of parody. If you've played the game at all you would know this by their character selection alone. Not to mention some of the best humor in all of videogames.

Bring on more Magicka!

The vamp in the background is creeping me out with his Picasso eye and mouth positions.

The ear on the bottom-left vamp is questionable too.

Alucard sorta looks like a lady dressed as a vampire man. Will be interesting to see how/if Konami responds to this.

There's already supposedly references to Castlevania in the game so I doubt Konami will say anything.

Paradox guy 1 said: Oh shit, the destruction guys are coming! what do we do? They're so sharp they'll see the copywrite infringement as soon as they hit the door.

Paradox guy 2: I GOT IT! Slap a mustache on him! No one ever suspects the 'Stache!

Wow, that artwork is totally a ripoff of Castlevania. I saw it and just assumed Dtoid put artwork -from- Castlevania until I took a good solid look at it. Hilarious.

In any case, Konami would have a lot of problems taking Paradox to court for a whole slew of reasons. Also, Paradox is awesome, and they're one of my favorite developers and publishers.

I am Vlad....I am definitely not a vampire.

I am excited, my friends and I plowed through the main game and The Stars are Left. This sounds like the right kind of new content to bring us back.

I wonder if they know that Dracula is public domain. If they wanted to confuse his name, they should have just scrambled the letters. Here you go, Paradox:

Arc Laud
Arc Dual - kind of cool.
Car Laud
Car Dual - dibs on new twisted metal character.
A Ad Curl
A Lad Cur - and, possibly, making him a VAMPIRE WEREWOLF!!!
A La Curd
A La Crud - what I think of overusing Alucard as a character name.
Ad La Cur

Konami only has a copyright on their Alucard, however the name and character had existed long before he was introduced in the Castlevania games. So there is nothing wrong with them using a Alucard as long as it doesn't claim to be Konami's version of Alucard. However, parody or not, they are clearly ripping off Konami's version with that image.

Cool but, what's with the mustache and devil soul patch? It's Alucard not Dracula! Still, reason enough for me to check this game out now. Btw Konami does not have the copyright on Alucard (although the resemblance is cause for litigation) Alucard as a character was first introduced in 1930s vampire movies and has since been featured in other media like Hellsing.
