Platinum addresses Bayonetta PS3 problems, blames Sega photo

A few weeks ago, we talked about how Bayonetta was demoed on the PS3, and how that demo sucked a variety of balls. Platinum Games and Sega had both been quiet on the rather perplexing matter, but that silence has been broken today, with the developers addressing concerns that the PS3 version will be inferior. According to Platinum, this is all Sega's fault.

"With Bayonetta, we created the Xbox 360 version of the game first, and then handed off all the data and other assets to SEGA so they could begin the process of porting Bayonetta to the PS3, giving them advice regarding the porting process along the way and overseeing the progress to ensure that the PS3 version would be the best it could be," explains Platinum CEO Tatsuya Minami. "The goal was to release the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions to gamers day and date, and even though there have been trials and tribulations along the way, we are incredibly pleased to be able to present two playable versions of the game on the Tokyo Game Show floor.

"As the developers of Bayonetta, we have overseen both versions, and I would like to make one thing clear. The Xbox 360 and PS3, as hardware platforms, both have their own distinct differences and peculiarities, and these characteristics will naturally give birth to differences in the final product. However, all involved endeavored to exploit the specific traits of each console to create an enjoyable experience. We feel the best way to evaluate this is by actually playing the game for yourself and coming to your own conclusions.

"Bringing Bayonetta to users of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 is something we feel to be very important, and I feel passionately that we have fulfilled our responsibility in that regard."

Still doesn't explain why Sega chose to demo the PS3 version in such a shabby state, nor does it definitely say that these problems won't appear in the final build. Still, it's nice to know they're aware that issues exist, so hopefully that means they're on the case and the two versions should both be running smoothly before it releases.

It's strange that they demo'd it in such a poor state, and it's also strange that a big developer like Sega has to wrestle with the PS3's hardware too.

Provided the end result is the same on both platforms, or at least with negligable difference only some douche pixelcounter will notice, then there's no harm done really.

That is, if the end result is the same.

Yeah Segahas had a bad History of bad communication, in fact I think they would have still would be making systems if Japan would have just listened to Sega of america.

hopefully sega is as responcive to this issue as Platnum is with detail.

I was at the Bayonetta event in Roppogi. I didnt really notice a difference but then again I wasnt really doing version checks. I played the PS3 version myself and only watched someone else play the 360 version.

in any case, I really like it so I am buying it on PS3.

What, no googly eyes and silly teeth on Bayonetta?

I'd really be disappointed if the final PS3 build still has issues, I'm (sorta) looking forward to this game.

And judging by Platinum's response, it does not look like they will be fixing things either. Has The Orange Box (PS3) returned in the form of an action game?

Yeah sounds like a preemptive response to the final builds. Really if Sega can't fix this they fail as a Japanese Developer. This game should be more like devil May Cry 4 and look the same but take advantage of the larger storage space of the PS3 and have less compressed textures and better sound. Isn't this game coming out on the PS3 in Japan very soon?

Looks like the 360 re-won the console war.
I must be the only one not interested about this game.

@ Solidus I second that notion. Although Im not really looking forward to this game, it more less sparks my curiosity really. But I dont want to see a shabby PS3 port, fuckin keep it in the cooker a bit longer, if that means 360 gets it a month or two earlier so be it, but I just dont want to see another orange box incident. Anyways, Ive read and heard from developers (in videos, not personally) that its easier to develop for PS3 first and than go do the 360. I dont know my ass from the hole in the ground when it comes to programming anything, but thats what I herd anyways. If it even matters.

I agree, this game doesn't even get a semi-chub from me.

Just because Sega is doing the port and hasn't done a bang up job polishing it yet doesn't mean Sega does not know how to handle porting to the PS3.

If you gave the job of porting to some junior engineer who is new at this sort of thing, then yeah, it's going to hit a rough spot. It doesn't matter if they work for Sega, Blizzard or Valve. Companies employ lots of people, and of the best talent at that company, they're not going to work on every game the company makes.

So it's not Sega who is sucking. It's whatever team who works for Sega on the project that is sucking.

They should have just left it on the 360 instead of pulling the PS3 into this mess.

As it was for the XBOX vs PS2....so shall it be for 360 vs PS3...:

Multi-platform purchases should always goto the XBOX.

Why not release it later, more polished on the PS3? Because seriously, Orange Box PS3 was messed up, and that's just rude to the consumer.

I'm absolutely looking forward to this game, and this is very distressing for me. Action titles feel better on the Dualshock 3 controller to me, so I'm still hoping these porting issues are resolved by the time the game is released. Hopefully the TGS PS3 demos can already show as much...

Why don't they just sort for the PS3 and stop blaming each other!

ha, if Platinum Games wanted the PS3 version to be the best that it could be then they wouldn't have made the 360 version first, that was their only mistake. We've all heard that ps3 games come out better when they are developed on the ps3 then ported to the 360, an easier port too.

It's amazing that a visual and technical masterpiece like Uncharted 2 (or even Demon's Souls for that matter) literately NEVER loads on the PS3 other than at the very beginning of play, then you have crap like this come out. Clearly not a whole lot of work was done to stream data off the blu-ray.Menu loads however are just inexcusable. I might be annoyed by this except I have no interest whatsoever about this game when I could get the GOW Collection or just wait for God of War III.
