Plants vs Zombies, the 'best-selling game PopCap's ever had' photo

PopCap Games went outside of their Peggle comfort zone with the quirky tower defense title, Plants vs. Zombies. Their risk is now their reward -- Plants vs. Zombies is a financial success. So successful, actually, that PopCap can now claim it as the most lucrative game in their heroin-laced library. Ever.

“At this very early point in its history, it’s the best-selling game PopCap’s ever had,” PopCap PR man Garth Chouteau recently told Gamasutra.

Mind is blown. We weren’t shy in lauding the innovative and entirely too addictive title, but a new IP crushing Peggle so soon? That’s like killing a zombie giant with a fire sling or something.

This game is so incredibly fun. I lost track of how much time I've spent playing it this weekend.

But Jesus Christ I still can't figure out how to make good use of those double sunflowers!

Although I'm floored at this news, and it is at it's core a casual game, I'm a bit confused why it's already beaten Peggle. While my grandma and toddler niece could pick up and enjoy Peggle, PVZ is lost on them.

Perhaps it's the large "hardcore" demographic that enjoyed this game more than Peggle and Co. that made up for it?

I bought it on Colettes review and the fact that the demo pretty much leaves you with no other option but to buy it cause its so damn awesome.

@Magnalon:

I showed this game to all of my friends who don't play very many games and they all went home and bought it. They love it, it's probably the most time they've spent playing video games since the N64.

I think that PvZ appeals to the more intelligent casual gamer. While Peggle is easy to pick up, PvZ provides a greater sense of accomplishment for those who would easily get bored with Peggle.

@Niero: you know, if they just made something along the lines of what they did with Peggle Nights (staying as close to the original formula as possible), I would be happy. if they decided to make a shitton of updates (new levels etc.) I'm not sure if I would enjoy that as much. I will most likely buy the almost inevitable sequel as I enjoy this game waaaaaay too much.

Good for them! It's a very well-made game, and has a great style to it.

I still wish I hadn't played it from 2 pm until 11:30 pm yesterday, though.

I guess I shouldn't doubt the Word of PopCap, but I find it extremely unlikely to have outsold years of Bejeweled or Peggle sales in mere weeks.

Perhaps they mean the rate of sales and not total sales?

@Dr Kai: I thought the same thing. I think maybe they mean first month sales or something.

PVZ is fantastic. I'd love some kind of verses multiplayer, not sure how it'd work but I'm sure pop Cap could figure it out.

This also needs to come to XBLA....I'd play through it again from scratch

I also find it REALLY hard to believe it out sold Bejeweled already. This has to be units projected or something along those lines.

it will be units sold in the first month or something like that
if its lifetime sales across all platforms and its still beaten bejewelled/peggle already i will eat my balls

Wait, what? For some reason I didn't expect to casual crowd to embrace this game.
Did they eat this game up after all, or did the hardcore just do to PopCap what the casuals did to Nintendo?

I love stories where game developers actually do WELL. Go Flowers! Go Zombies! Your theme song is way too catchy, get it out of my brain, you bastards.

In order to fit the full game zone on the DS it'd end up looking like shiiiiiit, each plant will only have like 20 pixels available to draw it in. You'd barely be able to see if a zombie has a road cone or bucket on its head.

Are they now rich enough to toss away the "indie" label now and become one of the big boys?

@Chronic
What?? Did they ever have the Indie Label?? Ever since Bejeweled, my newsletters from them have all been titled "Popcap: The leading world-seller and king of the casual market".

Where'd you get that idea?
Jetsetlemming's Avatar - Comment posted on 05/25/2009 17:24

Popcap are the exact opposite of indie. They've been attacked and insulted as anti-indie and hurting indie productions since they're a high profile, very well funded operation working in the same field that most indie teams tend to take on- simple 2d stuff that's easy to make and play.
