Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley had a chat about PlanetSide 2 with Chinese site 17173.com, which was then translated by MMOsite and picked up by PlanetSide Universe. Phew. Some of the comments were misinterpreted, but Smedley has since responded. On with the news:
He says the aim for the beta is late this year or early next, remarking that "It's ready when it's ready and we are proud of it." In other not-totally-unexpected news, PlanetSide 2 will be a free-to-play title. The specifics aren't finalized yet, although Smedley did drop a hint: "we like League of Legends a lot."
The final tidbit from the interview was that the team wants players to craft weapons eventually, but such functionality won't be present at launch.
Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Kinda mixed about the F2P Model for this game...
sigh...
Ugh, I'm about as interested in this game as I am Tribes: Ascend despite both being two of my favorite shooters of the last decade.
If you spend $50 the day the game comes out and then $15 a month after that I am sure you will be a beast.
I think I might Like this setup as long as the do the LoL model right.
It's not just about the stupid micro-transactions although I do not like that payment model at all.
It's also about the types of people who play F2P games. Every F2P game I have ever played is full of some of the dumbest people alive in addition to most of them just being gigantic asses. So many kids play F2P games no matter how bad the games are just because "it's free, omg! so cool!"
Then there's the fact that anyone can constantly create new accounts. You can't permanently ban the worst offenders and that's especially true for the inevitable hackers that infest a number of F2P games, though I'm sure an AAA F2P game will for the most part have that under control, but not entirely.
I also find the quality of F2P games to be far below that of retail games. The only exception being games that were either A: originally a retail game or B: Originally planned to be a retail game. (League of Legends)
