Despite the fact that Gears of War 2 lead designer Cliff Bleszinski cited piracy as a big reason for focusing development of his game on the Xbox 360, Epic main man Mark Rein has decided to be a Contrary Mary and give a different analysis.
Here's what Cliffy had to say on the issue:
Here’s the problem right now; the person who is savvy enough to want to have a good PC to upgrade their video card, is a person who is savvy enough to know BitTorrent to know all the elements so they can pirate software. Therefore, high-end videogames are suffering very much on the PC.
Right now, it makes sense for us to focus on Xbox 360 for a number of reasons. Not least PCs with multiple configurations and piracy.
Speaking to Ripten, Rein answered a question over young Clifford's statements by not answering it at all, merely citing his own reason for the game's 360 development:
The reason we decided not to develop Gears 2 for PC was so that we could focus our resources on making Gears 2 the best possible Xbox 360 game it could be rather than splitting them across multiple platforms like we did with the first one. I think Gears 2 will be a better game for it and that this was the right decision.
So what's the story in Balamorey? Is it piracy or is it simply to make a better game? Could it be both? If so, why did Rein dodge the question? I don't think there's anything wrong with admitting that you don't want to put a game on a platform right away because it will be stolen to buggery. Well, it might upset PC gamers ... but they have Peggle!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
Still buying it, but I wish it would come out for the PC.
Also: Damn straight I got Peggle!
Though seriously... "High-End" Video games?
Also, fuck PCs. <3
I'm glad Mark Rein has seen the error of his ways. The PC has been spoiled by quality shooters for years, it's hard to compete with something that has been designed for console and has the limitations required to make it a more palatable console game. It's the similar to how RTS's have never done that well on console.
There are certain games that lend themselves to a PC environment, and an arcade shooter like Gears is one for the couch not the computer desk.
i may be wrong here, but that sounds like a total crock of shit because iirc the PC version of gears was produced entirely after the 360 version was finished...
6 months later it's a different story. Of course MS and Epic aren't going to tell people GoW2 will be out on PC in 6-12 months. It'll still be a great game, but PC hardware costs will be down.
Thus they can sell the game to people like me twice, first on the 360 and then on the PC.
Except Peggle.
I have gears both on 360 and PC, and i actually like the 360 version better. when playing on PC, i actually use the 360 controller... i have a hard time with the mouse controls for some reason. The PC version looks prettier, but I imagine if gears 2 came out for both systems, it would be hard to tell the difference anymore.
i wish all this PC Piracy talk would die down... it makes it annoying for those of us who do buy their games...i am all for internet authentication. i love playing my steam games without a disc in the drive, and look forward to doing the same with RA3.
I have a solution to this problem. Ban video card upgrades. No video cards upgrades, no BitTorrent pirating.
Except Peggle."
Damn straight. I think it's kind of telling that his game got BAD REVIEWS, then suddenly it's the fault of Piracy. Or, or it could be that the game came up against better games (Team Fortress 2, Stalker, what-have-you) and wasn't as good. Because.. it isn't. I don't like it for mostly personal reasons, but basically, it's a boring game. And God damn is it ugly. Grays of War might be passable on a 360, although lord knows why, but come on, Quake one had more colours in it. And the enemies are just as retarded in GoW as they are in Quake.
hell It is not even up to PC peoples standards for a good game from epic.
Ut2004 is still way batter than anything gears of war ever did and that engine has been out since like 2003.
Pc people expect more than the crap simple mindless gameplay and cheep ass graphics gears of war gave us. I didn't care and i still don't.
I didnt even pirate the first gears of war, and I could have that is how much I don't care.
What i do care is how lame Ut3 is compared to ur2004, what the hell are you doing to your games epic?
they showed the engine and game as PC tech with gears of war crap running. way before gears of war was even shown that is why i was never shocked.
Oh look it that guy from the tech DEmos when they was talking ut2007,,, boring.
