Pioneer makes a huge Blu-Ray

Pioneer makes a huge Blu-Ray photo
     Blu-ray
Hideo Kojima is probably in tears right now. The newest Blu-Ray offering from Pioneer is a monstrous 400 GB disk. It is composed of 16 beautifully blue layers. Previously this feat was unavailable to Pioneer, but apparently lessons learned while making DVDs larger has helped the process.

Pioneer had this to say to TechRadar about the announcement:
Since the optical specifications of the objective lens…are the same as those for the existing BD discs, it is possible to maintain compatibility between the new 16-layer optical disc and the BD discs.
I’m not going to pretend to understand tech babble, or the drawbacks to a disk this huge. What I will say is that this sounds incredible. 400GB is a ridiculously large amount of space to work with.  If this disk ever becomes available to the market at a decent cost, developers for the PS3 should never have a spacing concern again. We might even be able to experience a completely uncompressed game as well.

I wondered, after Toshiba folded the HD DVD market, if we would see a radical growth in the potential of the Blu-Ray disk. Now that it’s confined to one medium, it looks as though that dream is being realized. Pioneer will have a show-and-tell for the disk in a few days if they can fit it through the door. Until then, Kojima and I can dream of the possibilities together.

Remember when the first Blu-rays disc were annouced? NO ONE thought that space can be filled until Metal gear. This well probably be easily filled up with a game that has such a fine detail our brains well explode.

I wonder how big MGS4 is when all the video and audio files are uncompressed. Man, the possibilities...

I don't think you want to toss around a phrase like 'Metal Gear Solid 5 confirmed' too lightly there, sir. The fanboys will easily tear you to small bits.

Someone explain the joke to me.. Maybe I can still chuckle at it.

this should of came out last year! when mgs4 was still in development stages. oh well maybe they can throw this at those square guys so they can stop giving 360 all the good rpgs and throw sony a bone.

These would NOT be compatible with current Blu-Ray players (ie. the PS3).
They're saying that any players that would support 16-layer discs, would also be compatible with the Blu-Ray discs we're currently using.

Very cool for dvd collection of tv series, but for games while potentially awesome, they might boost costs a bit.

However, it would be nice if the next gen of consoles used even an 100/200gb Blu Ray. Then they can shut up aboout not enough space for their games, for good hopefully.

Whatever. As long as developers keep pumping out half assed PS3 ports of year old X360 games, it doesn't matter if you get 4000GB. I'd rather have optimized games on DVD then shitty ports on 16 layer blu-ray.

Yes, I'm a PS3 owner.

Why don't we worry about the read speed of the PS3 before we start tooting our horns about bigger discs...
Dennen's Avatar
Dennen at 07/10/2008 21:07
@pedrovay2003

I would guess that it's beyond the PS3's capabilities right now. Probably would require a complete relaunch of the PS3.

And the chances of that happening are most likely beyond negative. So i'd say that ah... I honestly have no clue what kind of application this can be used for...

Maybe if digital projectors in theaters started using a SUPER HD to try and raise theater ticket sales... That would be nice... Far beyond 1080p resolution releases for theaters... But I do not claim to know anything about how exactly the projector booths are. I could be far on the side of wrong. But I just do not see what this could possibly be used for... If it's compatible with the PS3 and all Blu Ray Players now, then we're good to go for great things!... If not, then... I kind of see it as a pointless advancement.

Well I just hope the next gen of gaming systems can use this or obviously better it in the years still to come and go. Storage has always been a factor when it comes to games but then this also means if they up the graphical capacities etc etc etc ... more money meaning even less innovation.

According to the Japanese company: "Since the optical specifications of the objective lens…are the same as those for the existing BD discs, it is possible to maintain compatibility between the new 16-layer optical disc and the BD discs."

So this means you can probably pop one of these big-boys into your newly purchased Blu-ray player and still access all the large space optical goodness when released.[/i]

the prevailing answer is: we'll see

It wont be too difficult to fill up the disc with game developers like Hideo Kojima around.

Imagine unparalleled orchestral music entirely uncompressed and with zero quality loss and,

SuperSuperMicrowaveyoureyeballs High definition video.
Dosent seem that far fetched to me.

I see a whole new generation of high quality games on the horizon.or it might be the pizza I ordered

Hey, that stuff about getting rid of physical media is never gonna happen. Its like asking everyone to give up their cars and use unreliable public transport and walk again.

On top of all that, the dvd market brings huge profits to big studios for films and especially tv series. I really don't see studios wanting to kick that bucket any time soon.

The taste, smell and feel of chocolate is always better than looking at pictures of it, and the dvd angle is very similar in this regard.

I'd bet the only buggers to not exploit this Blu Ray media next time would be Nintendo. Idiots.

There is no way the existing BluRay players could read this new format.

@ anomalous_underdog:

I believe you have misinterpreted the quote. It means that new 16 layer players could read BR50 (BluRay 50GB) as well as the new BR400 discs, as the tech is the same. The difference is that the to read the new 16 layer disc, the laser has to be able to refocus itself to 16 diffent settings, whereas a PS3 or Blu-Ray's current laser only has two focus settings.

Think of it, as if you have 16 windows in a row about 50 feet in front of you, and each one has words written on it, in a semi opaque paint. Now take a pair of binoculars and read what's on the 1st window. Now, to read what's on the window behind it, you have to adjust the binoculars to bring the 2nd pane in focus to read. Now, you have to refocus again for the 3rd window, etc, etc.
