Hideo Kojima is probably in tears right now. The newest Blu-Ray offering from Pioneer is a monstrous 400 GB disk. It is composed of 16 beautifully blue layers. Previously this feat was unavailable to Pioneer, but apparently lessons learned while making DVDs larger has helped the process.
Pioneer had this to say to
TechRadar about the announcement:
Since the optical specifications of the objective lens…are the same as those for the existing BD discs, it is possible to maintain compatibility between the new 16-layer optical disc and the BD discs.
I’m not going to pretend to understand tech babble, or the drawbacks to a disk this huge. What I will say is that this sounds incredible. 400GB is a ridiculously large amount of space to work with. If this disk ever becomes available to the market at a decent cost, developers for the PS3 should never have a spacing concern again. We might even be able to experience a completely uncompressed game as well.
I wondered, after Toshiba folded the HD DVD market, if we would see a radical growth in the potential of the Blu-Ray disk. Now that it’s confined to one medium, it looks as though that dream is being realized. Pioneer will have a show-and-tell for the disk in a few days if they can fit it through the door. Until then, Kojima and I can dream of the possibilities together.

Someone explain the joke to me.. Maybe I can still chuckle at it.
I laugh at them
And give me more fucking bonus content on my Blu-Ray movies!
If that ends up becoming a PS3 standard, then I just quit right now.
They're saying that any players that would support 16-layer discs, would also be compatible with the Blu-Ray discs we're currently using.
However, it would be nice if the next gen of consoles used even an 100/200gb Blu Ray. Then they can shut up aboout not enough space for their games, for good hopefully.
/someone had to say it
And sorry if I mislead any of you RSS guys. I wasn't thinking about that when I wrote it. The title has been changed!
Yes, I'm a PS3 owner.
That is some crazy huge storage space.
I would guess that it's beyond the PS3's capabilities right now. Probably would require a complete relaunch of the PS3.
And the chances of that happening are most likely beyond negative. So i'd say that ah... I honestly have no clue what kind of application this can be used for...
Maybe if digital projectors in theaters started using a SUPER HD to try and raise theater ticket sales... That would be nice... Far beyond 1080p resolution releases for theaters... But I do not claim to know anything about how exactly the projector booths are. I could be far on the side of wrong. But I just do not see what this could possibly be used for... If it's compatible with the PS3 and all Blu Ray Players now, then we're good to go for great things!... If not, then... I kind of see it as a pointless advancement.
wow yall forgot about digital distribution pretty quickly there eh?
Imagine how long game installs would take with that puppy.
"Son, you were willed this copy of Metal Gear Solid 6 by your grandpappy. Make him proud by playing it all the way through to Disc 3."
"Okay father."

According to the Japanese company: "Since the optical specifications of the objective lens…are the same as those for the existing BD discs, it is possible to maintain compatibility between the new 16-layer optical disc and the BD discs."
So this means you can probably pop one of these big-boys into your newly purchased Blu-ray player and still access all the large space optical goodness when released.[/i]
the prevailing answer is: we'll see
Imagine unparalleled orchestral music entirely uncompressed and with zero quality loss and,
SuperSuperMicrowaveyoureyeballs High definition video.
Dosent seem that far fetched to me.
I see a whole new generation of high quality games on the horizon.or it might be the pizza I ordered
yaaay
On top of all that, the dvd market brings huge profits to big studios for films and especially tv series. I really don't see studios wanting to kick that bucket any time soon.
The taste, smell and feel of chocolate is always better than looking at pictures of it, and the dvd angle is very similar in this regard.
I'd bet the only buggers to not exploit this Blu Ray media next time would be Nintendo. Idiots.
@ anomalous_underdog:
I believe you have misinterpreted the quote. It means that new 16 layer players could read BR50 (BluRay 50GB) as well as the new BR400 discs, as the tech is the same. The difference is that the to read the new 16 layer disc, the laser has to be able to refocus itself to 16 diffent settings, whereas a PS3 or Blu-Ray's current laser only has two focus settings.
Think of it, as if you have 16 windows in a row about 50 feet in front of you, and each one has words written on it, in a semi opaque paint. Now take a pair of binoculars and read what's on the 1st window. Now, to read what's on the window behind it, you have to adjust the binoculars to bring the 2nd pane in focus to read. Now, you have to refocus again for the 3rd window, etc, etc.
