It seems Mario and Yoshi almost had to share that Super Mario Galaxy 2 spotlight! In an interview with GameTrailers, director Koichi Hayashida revealed that during the development of Super Mario Galaxy 2, cameos from other Nintendo franchises were at one point a possibility:

"One of the early proposals that we discussed for Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the possibility of including characters from other [Nintendo] franchises...For example, you might have Donkey Kong or Pikmin show up."

He goes on to say that they presented the idea to Miyamoto, who came down on the idea swiftly, saying the inclusion would need a functional purpose. He also cited the Pikmin's design:

"In the Pikmin games, you'll notice that all the Pikmin are very thin - tall and narrow for their frame. Mario enemies tend to be on the short and squat side and there's a functional reason for that. They're easier to stomp on. They're lower so you can get above them and broader so you can land on them. In that sense, Pikmin are just not well suited for the Mario universe."

Well, fair enough Miyamoto. A Donkey Kong cameo could have worked, but at least we'll always have Super Smash Bros. if we need some crossover fun, right?

No Mario Galaxy 2 on 3DS because Mario would be a 'speck'

Review: Super Mario Galaxy 2

For me, when Nintendo released Super Mario 64, it showed me that 3D platforming was the future. But, because of the camera and other control issues that had yet to be polished, I wasn't very excited for the future of 3D platf...more

Review: Putty Squad

Of all of the games to get a PS4 remake, you'd probably never put Putty Squad, an SNES game from 1994, at the top of the list. But here we are in 2014 with a full-on re-imagining, with more or less the same platforming mechanics that still work nearly 20 years later. The only problem is, System 3 Software has opted to charge $29.99 for a decidedly dated game -- which is a bit of a problem.more
