It's been nearly three months since a new character has been announced for Super Smash Bros. Brawl. After weeks and weeks of (mostly) boring filler, today's DOJO update reveals Captain Olimar from Pikmin as a playable character in Brawl. Not much is given away today except that the Pikmin will play a heavy role in Olimar's fighting style.

Five different Pikmin will stick with Olimar but only for a short time. You can restock up on more Pikmin by plucking them up from the ground. Olimar will need the Pikmin to perform his Smash Attacks as well. The Pikmin will tend to scatter away from Olimar too. There will more than likely be another update this week showing Olimar's Special Attacks. Olimar's stage music was also shown off today.

From the sounds of it, Olimar would be pretty useless without the Pikmin. It's going to be really interesting to see how this team of sorts will play like.

[Thanks, Das Inchworm!]

It looks like the Pikmin bloom at certain points too so I wonder if that affects anything.

About damn time we got something decent.

This is going to be a really unique character. I'm really liking the direction Brawl is going on.

Nice....They have some interesting mechanics for some of the characters in Brawl - I'm sure there are more characters to reveal, I just want a few more obscure NES-era characters :)

@Trevor McGee
I think it's too late to be adding characters now. The game will be out in like 2 weeks in Japan.

Olimar was one of those characters that a lot of people said couldn't be in because he doesn't fight and he's too small. This just proves that they can put anyone in if they really want to, and that the people who said that are idiots.

I love how this update completely floored me for a bit. I simply did not know how to respond. I was just stunned that Olimar made it into the game, and to a certain extent I still am. The music doesn't strike me as the perfect background noise for a brawl, but Sakurai-san is right that choosing music from Pikmin is difficult because the two Pikmin games on Gamecube had such natural soundtracks. There were very few 'flashy' tracks to choose from, but many relaxing ones. All things considered, they did a pretty respectable job with the arrangement.

@ sh13ld:

I'd rather have a Wii version. I'm not the biggest fan of 3D DS games. Just made pretty 2D games instead of shitty-looking 3D ones (Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow vs. Metroid Prime: Hunters), I demanded just now.

This likely is to be the last new character to be revealed before Brawl it's released, so I have mixed feelings about that character being Olimar.

But I also can't deny that unlike other characters people have been hoping for like Mega Man, Pepper Pete from BurgerTime, and the California Raisins, Olimar and Pikmin will play in a way completely unlike any other Brawl characters.

Will the Pikmin be vulnerable to damage as well as Olimar, and as such could they be individually picked off (pun intended)? Will Olimar be able to throw Pikmin at items to get them to grow more Pikmin like in the games? Will he ever be able to have 100 Pikmin at his disposal, even if only for his Final Smash?

We wouldn't be able to ask these sorts of questions about Mega Man or the California Raisins. And we'd have to fight to "I heard it through the grape vine", which would sort of assey.

And purple Pikmin's ass > Gutman's ass. Two great asses, of that I have no doubt. But only one can be king.

I am willing to publicly debate this point if anyone dare challenge me.

Plus, the purple Pikmin look like California Raisins. That's going to make a lot of hardcore Raisins fans out there very happy.

Color me titillated. I'm glad Sakurai is going for the more unique, interesting, quirky characters instead of just "cool" ones.

Not saying I don't want Mega Man, but it's the desire to make a game overly "cool" that destroyed Sonic and so many other franchises.

Can't. Wait. For. Brawl. Wish. I wasn't. Going to Canada. On February 10th. Oh. Well.

First of all, this is to who thinks this is probably the last *new* character.
Just because they don¨t show new characters every week doesnt mean they dont have a lot more characters.
They dont show new characters after they have created it.
All the characters are done, they just put it on the Dojo once in a while so they dont use up all the good stuff.

Since the game is comming out in japan in a few days, we will probably get a lot more juice, because its obvious there are going to be thousands of people posting every character and level available on the internets.

I am a smash lover, to prove my love, Im going to buy an american wii just because of Smash, problem is, where can I get one?
I see a lot of wiis on stores in europe, to bad VC games are 50gz and games take two years to come out. WITH GLITCHES.

F U Nintendo of europe or whoever is in charge of that peace of crap organization.

Wii bundle with smash, you will be mine.

It was obvious that Nintendo would include Pikmin in Brawl in some form. However, most people (including myself) expected Olimar and/or the Pikmin to be an assist trophy.

I suppose the website still has a handful of surprises left in it. By the way, is is correct to say that Brawl may perhaps have the most off-line and online features of any video game ?

I think you, Correct me if I'm wrong, will be able to get it there as the release date is simultaneous in North America. Hell I live there and I couldn't bare another day if it's not released on that day in my area.
