Quantcast

I just found out about the guy a few days ago, but Julius Sumner Miller may be my new favorite science educator.

Tonight, the regular cast sans Topher will discuss EA's recent Holiday woes, and what rules, if any, there are when adapting a work from another medium into a videogame.

As always, we're giving out Dtoid swag packs for the best listener question, so hit the jump and get to asking.

Do you think EA and the other game publishers actually learned from the supposed low sales of Mirror's Edge in the holiday crunch or will the publishers still have at least one AAA title released each week of October and November this coming holiday season?

Do you think they constantly adapt this release schedule because they believe their game is truely the best or do they do it in a proverbial "I have the biggest dick" contest in terms of sales?

What do you folks think about more new AAA titles like Resident Evil 5 releasing on Fridays as opposed to the usual Tuesday? Do you think it's in order to contend with the movie industry more directly?

Anthony, looking 10 years back to Goldeneye on the N64, video game graphics come leaps and bounds from plain colored polygons to textured and mapped models we see today. Do you foresee gaming graphics becoming similarly better over the next ten years, or will technology like Nvidia's 3d graphics setup become the next area of expansion?

When working on an adaptation, who do you think the intended target audience is: fans of the original works or gamers? Has there ever been a game that has reached both?

Siegelpuntz:
For Scottish Samit - Get your brogues together and play some Kiltzone 2.
Regular - Unfortunately for Puzzle Quest, you can't teach an old dog new Galactrix

Finally, “Hig” – really racist or am I reading too much into it?

I don't know if you're going to talk about this anyway, but what is your take on (this month's MM) "Expanded Universes"?

I think they're silly, but there's no reason not to have a bit of fun with them. Jim's fanfictions are particularly noteworthy, I feel.

Also, if Chad's dream is to swim with dolphins (which he accomplished), what is your animal based obsession?

50 Cent: Blood On The Sand successfully proves that throwing celebrities into video game staple situations without any care for context results in a well-mixed, tasty drink full of F-bombs and hot beats. Now that Fiddy has proven the equation sound, what other celebrities would do well for a starring role in a video game built entirely around their persona? Please note that I have already emailed EA regarding a proposed David Bowie Kart racer.

It's called GO-GO BOWIE, btw.

He blinded me with SCIENCE! That guys got a jungle in his eye brows. As for adapting another medium into a videogame, it really has to do with what the story is about. If you try to adapt Forest Gump into a videogame, chances are it will probably be boring, mostly because of no action or adeventure. However considering that there are some non-violent games with a good story and good gameplay you could probably adapt a non-actiony movie or book like Cast Away and still make a good game. Also another question to be asked, "is the video game canonical or stays faithful to the movie or book?" Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was actually a pretty good game. However, there were some bits of the story from the game that contradicted the movie. Also even though the Chronicles of Riddick game had the same characters and in the same setting, the story was totally different. A challenge to the upcoming Dante's Inferno video game is the book's lack of action packed adventure. The book is just a political commentary about life and society using Hell as an allegory. The deveopers of the game however have used artistic license to the max by making it an action game. Now, the game could be a great action game, but it might dissapoint fans of the book. What they could do is make it an action game WHILE making a political statement as the story progresses to keep it sort of faithful to the book's ideals. Anyways that's all the questions that I can think of.

In the last episode, it was somewhat mentioned that The Lost and The Damned was passed because it was a downloadable expansion as opposed to a mainstream commercial release.

If thats the case, what previously released games would you like to see get M or AO rated DLC?

Personally, I'd like to see the Barbie Horse Adventures series get some attention. Perhaps Barbie could eat horse feces and the cap on the friendship meter would go up, because lord knows that the current friendship meter is too small.

A few weeks ago, I found a box in a shop, entitled the "Kii gaming device". On the side of the box, it advertised new technologies, such as "Motion sensitive controller", and "Innovative 3 button setup", as well as the prowess the the hardware: "Realistic 16-bit graphics". They were no screenshots on the box. People were quite clearly buying these.

Do you think this is worse than making god damn awful party games for the Wii, or do you think they provide a service, by putting people off party games for only £45(R.R.P.)?

PS Womb Raider and Bonerquest the live action movie are not allowed as they have already been made/are in development?

I used to love shooters but lately I feel that they have been going downhill ... like a lot. I just feel bored of them. I played Gears of War 2 and it just felt like more of the same, I mean it was by no means a horrible game but it just felt very repetitive and had a retarded story.

I rented Killzone 2 this weekend and while I haven't played it a ton I just feel ... bored I guess. Does anyone else feel this way? Is this a problem from within me or is it that these games are really getting that shallow? There are still those really good shooters though that can keep my attention and continue to be fun (COD4, L4D). I used to love shooters and be all about Goldeneye and Halo (the first one).

So is this just me or is anyone else feeling like this?

Sub-Question: Will BonerQuest Ever see a shooter spinoff? Will it be original and deep or just another shallow alien shooter?

I have been playing Halo wars(thank you blockbuster) and My question is that do you think Cross medium (i dont konw the term)continue. I mean Halo was a FPS and HW is a RTs, any other franchise would take on a different medium?

I can only assume that Gears would be a logical choice for said expansion. But it doesnt only have to go from FPS--> RTS. I mean hell a FPS Final Fantasy Game(sort of what Dragon Quest is doing) or FPS Gears...Etc..etc..

I mean a FPS Resident Evil?

Do you think that Killzone 2 and it's shifting mission objectives and gameplay modes during matches could be a new FPS standard? There were games before it (Resistance 2) that have done it but KZ2 is the first one to pull it of right. Might this be another addition to the list first person shooter elements (regenerating health, cover systems, classes) that we see more often now? And would YOU like to see it more often?

Why don't game developers just make the movies that their games are based off of, like Capcom or Square Enix with their films Resident Evil: Degeneration and FF: Advent Children? Keep the characters the same visually and keep their same voice actors. Sounds good to me.

Would this solution work?

Do you guys think the horrible cry baby antics of posters on the killzone.com forum(and others) about the "terrible" control issues will get anywhere with game developers. I think the controls are fine the way they are, but would gladly see them change if it would stop all the bitching. The constant posting of Killzone 2 control bitching is sucking up all the bandwidth on the internet, and it makes me sad. :(

Julius Sumner Miller is a God among science educators via the medium of video. Julius Sumner Miller and Mr. Wizard could collectively defeat Magneto with their mind power and knowledge of science.

A Question: Assume Game of the Year (and all increased sales that entail) is something all games should strive for. Considering that most GOTY winnners involve either great quanitity of story and content, or a breadth of multiplayer versatility, is there any value left for developers to create interesting, medium-length story based games?

Or alternatively, should games like Portal, Mirror's Edge, Deadly Creatures and Assassins Creed (Easily condensed into a shorter game) start to see releases bundles like the Orange Box as a standard?

Also, do you hope to see the advertising antics that Eat Lead has displayed used more often in the future? How many of you would like to see more games that have these back catalogues of games and info made up, as if we've loved the Matt Hazard franchise for so long? I love these shenanigans, as they've actually gotten me very interested in the game.

Argh, Physics. The bane of my existence. I mean, I spend a good deal of time making sure that the papers piled on my desk are balanced and wont slip, then when I decide to eat dinner in my room and when I need to put down my plate on this pile(cuz it's a small desk) and then something causes the walls to shake a little making my desk shake a little making my dinner fall onto my lap and the floor. DAMN YOU PHYSICS!!! I WILL BEAT YOU ONE DAY!!!!

So yeah I have a gaming physics related question:

-Do you think that the addition of physics into games have changed them for the better, or have there only been a few games that actually benefit from an actual physics engine and the rest would have been the same with or without one?

So yeah, happy podcasting guys.

Do you guys think that the Dante's Inferno game would have recieved less of a literary backlash if it had a name other that 'Dante's Inferno'?

Take God of War for example, narrative wise it basically turns greek mythology into an action film, but since the game isn't calling itself 'The Oddysey' or 'The Iliad' we can all accept it as a loose interpretation.

Perhaps if Dante's Inferno was called something else like '9 Circles' or 'Go to Hell' then people would see the game more as a loose interpretation instead of a perversion of a literary classic. What's in a name eh?

Your thoughts?

With games like The Sims and Animal Crossing having been around for years, and newcomers on the scene like flower and Noby Noby Boy, do you think that the upcoming release of Aaron Linde's BonerQuest: Just Dicking Around will garner a lukewarm reception due to the overcrowding of the "pointless games" genre, or is interest picking up enough that it will be heralded as the pinnacle of the genre?

On adapting mediums, the universal third rule of videogames must be upheld. "Thou shalt not create shit" but then also there are various other problems adapting things like say movies. If you try to make a movie a videogame, it wouldn't work. The prime reason for this is that videogames usually run as .exe and not .avi which I found out after making an entire game in .avi and then not having it work. This made me considerably pissed which lead to me throwing my emulated nes that I was using to run it across the room. (This is quite a feat as emulators are actually invisible miniature goblins the will kill you as soon as look at you.) So there, that's the problem with converting other mediums to videogames.

P.S. I thought geometry wars was shit

When talking about taking one piece of media and adapting it to video games, the sheer amount of suck makes it difficult to realize that the pendulum swings both ways. We've all seen our fair share of bad movie licensed games and shallow beat 'em ups and fighters based on beloved comic book and anime characters; but what about movies, comics, and anime based on the games we so enjoy?

Movies are almost universally shit, that's a given, but I've seen horrible pieces of creative abortion in the forms of comics and anime too (Example: Malibu's Street Fighter comic or the Persona Trinity Soul anime). Is it the fault of the people adapting the media into its new form, or is it that difficult to keep a compelling narrative when switching the form in which it is presented?

In a recent comment one of the head EA guys said that one of the reasons that EA's two main holiday games Mirror's Edge and Dead Space didn't do so well is because came out relatively close together, with that in mind do you think that both games would of been more successful if the release dates were more spread out?

Personally I think EA deserved better since last year they came out with a lot of different types of new IPs in different genres such as Mirror's Edge, Dead Space and Boom Blox while Activision posted a profit and yet all they came out with a bunch of franchises that they are hell-bent on milking to death and a whole glut of Wii shovelware that rivals Ubisoft or a random shovelware/budget publisher.

Would Alan Moore approve?
Is the game an example of movie studios selling out and pillaging an aztec gold mine? or embracing video games as a legitimate from of story telling?

Are devlopers truly utilizing the advantages of todays technology to make new and and innovative games? I was playing Killzone 2 recently and while the graphics, audio, particle effects, and animation was fantastic I couldn't shake the feeling that the game was really no different from the original Killzone from the PS2. Don't get me wrong, Killzone 2 is a great game, but is it really pushing the boundrys of immersion and game development that many claim. Honsetly, I feel just as immersed in KZ2 as I do in Ocarina of Time. Despite all of our new technology it seems like games are not really evolving as most people say. Topher says that we are still playing PS2 and Xbox games but with prettier graphics. I'll go 1 step further: We are still playing 16 and 32 bit games but with a new coat of paint. Go ahead and play Final Fantasy VI and then play Lost Odyssey. Is there really a difference?

I attended an Ian Bogost talk early this year and he was saying that innovation is often a distraction to developers and that 'adaptation' is much more important during development. He was speaking in terms of mechanics and genre, but I'd argue that this is being applied to IP aswell. Considering this, what is more important: That a game adaptation is affecting in the same way as it's source material, or that the game adaptation works as a game?

Dante's Inferno could have been a fantastic game if EA wanted to be artful and appeal to a MUCH smaller market, but of course they don't and it appears to be a GoW clone.

Anyways, not to go on too long but it begs the question: Is Aaron Linde's BonerQuest going to be borrowing more than aesthetics from it's graphic novel counterpart or does sir Linde hope to expand upon his original masterpiece by changing it to appeal to GAMERS?

Also, maybe, what games would have been better movies, movies as games, etc...

'Shoot 'em up' for example, should have been a game.
