Philip K. Dick novels get the gaming treatment photo

Today, The Guardian reports that The Halcyon Company -- a media company unheard of in the gaming world -- has obtained the right of first option to Philip K. Dick's works and plans to adapt two of his novels into games. The two games would mark The Halcyon Company's introduction to the gaming world, and to be perfectly honest, I'm a little worried.

Normally, the news of one of my favorite author's works being adapted to games would be cause for celebration, but a company in its infancy toying around with Philip K. Dick novels as a basis for games is unsettling. However, Victor Kubicek, co-CEO for The Halcyon Company, allays the fears of sci-fi aficionados thusly:

"Philip's daughters have never allowed anyone this kind of access before. Until we closed the deal we didn't realise how coveted the library was in Hollywood."

While a few of his novels have been adapted to games before, they've never done particularly well (with perhaps the exception of Blade Runner). If The Halcyon Company does the novels justice with their adaptations, this has the potential to produce some very interesting games backed by the hardware they really need.

I agree, this could either be really awesome or really horrible. Any idea on what novels they're adapting?

Phillip K. Dick needs to wash his forehead, his weird third eye tattoo is giving off smell rays.

Their first project should be a point and click adventure based on VALIS. Pretty sure anyone who played through the whole thing would cease to exist on this material plane, but that's the price you pay.

$10 they'll end up making a FPS out of The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch. (shudder)

Now imagine a game where you play as one of the agents with a scramble suit from "A Scanner Darkly".

Haha it would be almost like a survival horror, depending on the book. Phillip K. Dick rocks.

Still waiting on the news for Ender's Game though.

How about another Valis game...not based on his books, but on the already existing video game series of the same name? :)

Need a game set in the Altered Carbon universe too. Not Phillip K. Dick, but the author won the Phillip K. Dick award. Double Sleeving FTW!

I would be interested to see how well they transition his ideas to a game. And I agree a 'scramble suit' could look awesome if they got it right.

Also I hate videoman and all he stands for.

I'm curious as to how my favorite Dick novel- The Man in the High Castle- could possibly be turned into a game.

And now that I'm mulling it over, I hope they pick Valis. Or Total Recall. Anything else. I don't think you can make that fucking incredible book into a game.
