Philadelphia hates Hitman: Poster pulled for daring to have a gun on it photo

Considering Philadelphia is filled with violence and some of the worst kind of professional wrestling fans, it amuses me to think they're so upset over a poster that has a gun on it. Under the guise of bemoaning the shooting of cop Chuck Cassidy, this hilarious report from the Philadelphia Daily News celebrates the removal of Hitman movie posters from its city.

"... Ads glorifying gun violence to sell movies can be particularly sickening. So we're glad to report that some in City Hall are taking it personally and saying, "Enough is enough," claims the story's writer, doing his/her best to sound like a 1950's housewife. "Billboards and SEPTA bus ads for the movie "Hitman" went up a few weeks ago. They show a man pointing a gun, with a nearly naked woman draped over him."

I love the reactionary way this piece is written. Oh NO, not GUNS and NEARLY NAKED WOMEN. The woman is in a dress, by the way -- maybe she needs to wear a yashmak for these sexually repressed writers? Kotaku got a shot of the poster itself, which is visible above. I've seen worse.

While I fully appreciate that a cop got shot recently, being overly sensitive and crying every time you see a gun isn't going to help matters. I seem to recall that the very cops complaining about a picture of a gun carry real ones with themselves all the time. Maybe if the poster said "shooting Philly cops with guns is brilliant, everyone do it," they'd have cause for bitching. At any rate, do read that Philly news story -- as a celebration of censorship and an example of blatant over-reaction, you  won't find a more sadly funny article this morning.

[Thanks, Lemon]

Enough with the filler articles - time to make a report regarding the Ubisoft hilarious lawsuit over the Jade Raymond comic, and how Destructoid quickly pulled their article down and away when it happened.

Okay, so it's not high art, but the poster isn't that shocking. Looks like a James Bond-esque thing.

I'm from philly, and I gotta agree, this is about as fuckin dumb as it gets...sure, it's a shame what happened to that cop...and the fact that the fuckheads around here have gotten so outta hand they're shooting cops left and right these days...the Hitman ads have nothing to do with it....and they sure as hell don't remind me of the bumbling dumb fuck who shot the cop entering Dunkin Donuts...for the longest time, the local news have sections, with intros like "City in Crisis", all about people gettin shot every night...long before any Hitman ads...but I guess taking them down will magically make the violence disappear.

Philly is friggin' crazy and it doesn't help when there is a lack of prevention of violence by maintaining proper law but they will take down posters like this. WTF!

I too, am in Philly. Obviously we're being way too politically correct. It's a real shame that we have the violence that we do, but something tells me that criminals are going to shoot people regardless of what's on the side of the Septa buses.
I remember seeing a poster that was closer to their description though, where the woman was closer to being draped over Mr. 47, but it hardly makes a difference.
Plus, I've seen women walking around on the streets with more revealing clothes... then again, they were probably hookers.

If someone from the hitman movie or their advertising company gets wind of this and takes exception to it they could sue for breach of 1st amendment rights. I know that sounds cliche, but its a right we all have, people died for it and if we don't use it then they died for nothing. How much money do you think that would cost the people living in Philly? So then they would still have the gun violence and now a nice fat lawsuit to waste their tax dollars on all because of some pictures. Granted Philly is going through some tough times and my heart goes out to the officers over there. These ads couldn't have come at a worse time, but I don't think this was over the line. Maybe if they had posters of Kanye and Lynch shooting at cops then yea I could understand.

I'm very disappointed with this article - the Destructoid one, not the Philly one. I live fairly close to Philadelphia (less than 30 minutes), and I can attest that this cop killing seriously shook up the locals. It's entirely reasonable for people to be upset in the wake of that, when someone puts up a promotional poster that glorifies a character who kills people for money. While the woman isn't "draped" over him, it certainly gives the impression of, "Hey, look at this badass dude who totally rocks with guns and look at the hot chick who totally wants to seckz him!" It's not a matter of how extreme it is.

Yes, the article is a little sensationalist in how it phrases things but, Jim, can you also be a little less unnecessarily alarmist about it? Whether you think it's justified or not, the community is going through a difficult, affecting time and this poster doesn't have a place there, right now. Especially when gun violence is a pretty significant problem in the area.

The movie looks like shitte.

If Hitman is based on a game all about stealth and silencing your targets in a discreet manner, then why are there explosions galore in the trailer?

That guy is too short to be Agent 47.

since the 007 logo IS a gun, does that mean those are banned too? stupid

I live in philly and the gun violence here is a huge problem. While I dont agree with the article, I think you should be a little more understanding about the conditions under which it was written.

I actually read another article on how they wanted that exact same Hitman posted pulled, not because it had a gun but because you could the girl's "genital bulge".

Pretty fucking ridiculous.

Obviously, guns in posters do *not* guarantee a well-regulated militia, necessary for the security of a free state!

Man, oh man. This is rich. Banning an add because someone has a gun in it, when any old shmoe can drop in to their local supermarket and pick up enough hardware to start their own personal militia. Have a problem with guns? How about maybe considering MAKING THEM FUCKING ILLEGAL.

The sheer idiocy of modern society is just dumbfounding. To any american people reading this, I implore you: please, please vote.

This is hilarious, seeing as how philladelphia is one of the sketchiest cities I've ever been to. At a concert outside this venue, a crackhead pulled a gun on two of my friends but they ran back inside. What a dump.

i was wondering if you guys would do a story on this. kudos. while i feel for those involved with the cop shooting, the reaction to the ad is ridiculous... just as bad as when you there over the pond banned the Burnout: Paradise ad.

I must stick up for my city. I don't think banning these posters is the best outlet, but you must understand it was an emotional reaction by the police department. For weeks this has been on the news, we just buried the guy last week. Let the cops deal with it how they will, it's just a stupid crappy movie.

I am not the reactionary type but this story got to me as well, and I think people who are calling us out for whatever reason should just picture your dad doing his job and getting a bullet in the face from some piece of shit kid.

Also xmetninjax, trying sticking around for more than just a concert.

I'm amazed by how 95% of you seem to have no sense of understanding whatsoever. There's no dialogue here, it's just "Bah, censorship! Stupid!" Perhaps "sense of context" would be more appropriate, actually. You don't wear a Megadeath t-shirt to a funeral, and you don't put up posters for movies where the hero is a paid killer when your city has recently been through significant gun-play related tragedies. Common sense.

So because some people don't have sense, other people have to lower their standards, basically.

Awesome.

Here's the context:

Cop gets shot, writer sounds like a 1950's housewife and complained about "half naked" females "draped" over people. I laugh.

That is the context.

@Im OK
You make good points and I agree on some of them, but I don't think I've communicated my point properly. If I was a victim of gunplay, I wouldn't go crying about posters or movies or whatever. I'm not saying anyone should. All I'm saying is that, in a somewhat extreme case like this, people need to be sensitive to those who are hurting or upset. It's a damn movie poster. I would want them removed out of sensitivity to the families. (I wouldn't protest them, but I would remove them if I had the authority to do so.) The world isn't about me and it isn't about you (general, not specifically you) and your (again) games, it's about other people. (Uh, that makes sense. Somehow. Trust me.) This is a harmless and inconsequential gesture (and no, I don't believe that this in particular is part of any slippery slope) and it's a small sacrifice to make. It's not something worthy of such a title as "Poster pulled for daring to have a gun on it".

Frankly, in a place so messed up with gun violence Philadelphia, I think it's far more sensible to keep guns out of the local advertising, than not to. Good grief, typing that out just made me realize how fucking obvious that should be. Think about it.

->Im OK: Thanks for rewriting again the whole "censorship bad" schtick so the rest of us don't have to.

->Sharpless/Bastard: If the authorities have a problem with guns, they should ban guns and not pictures of them. Conversely, if they have a problem with pictures of guns, they should ban all of them. All films, games, TV shows, magazines, newspapers, documentaries by this logic should not be allowed distribution in phillie, otherwise it'd be a double standard. Seeing as I'm sure you'll agree this would be utterly insane, which is why I feel this banning is stupid. Society is me, and you, and the rest of them. It's a group of individuals. If everything that offended a small minority of society was banned, nothing would legally be allowed to exist.
