Phantom Brave: We Meet Again delayed to add Japanese voices photo

We've gotten word from Nippon Ichi that they've decided to delay their Wii title Phantom Brave: We Meet Again back until August 4th. The reason being, they've listened to the requests of their fans and included a dual-language option in the Wii title. So, implementing all that has set them back a bit from their original launch date towards the end of June.

I'm rather happy that they've decided to include this. With a lot of J-RPGs, there tends to be the problem of mediocre voice acting a lot of the time -- similar to the US anime industry. I can't be surprised, seeing as the actors don't get paid SAG rates because the companies are too small to afford them, so they have to work with smaller, non-guild actors. Plus, it gives me a chance to listen to the Japanese voices and get some listening practice in.

How do you prefer to play/watch games and shows? I know a lot of people who are into Japanese voices only, but my personal preference is based on setting -- if it's set in Japan, I'd prefer Japanese voices. If it's set in America or say, 18th century France, then I'd prefer English.

It seems like they don't have the same voice cast as in the original PB release, so probably a worthwhile option. I'd have to hear how the Japanese track sounds when someone is yelling PSYCHO BURGANDY!!!

while I appreciate the choice..and even use the japanese voices a lot..

seriously..most japanese voice actors are just as shitty if not worse.

Course thats desirable in certain genres like super robot wars where you want the corny jacked up to the max..but eh.

Give me the Japanese voices every time! The ONLY exception to this is where a game is made with US voices to start with like Ratchet & Clank: TOD
Eternal Sonata allows you to switch back and forth and I just could not take the English voices.
I can understand why some fans are too lazy to read their cutscenes but hey at least give us the option. Plus if you even understand a small amount of Japanese you will see there are big differences between the Japanese version and the English one.

I actually prefer watching tv shows and movies and playing games in it's original voice mostly because of translation accuracy. So if I was watching a Spanish movie, I'd prefer to watch it in Spanish voices with english subtitles. Same thing with gaming, if the game is japanese, I prefer to hear the voices in japanese with english subtitles. However, I only prefer this because of dubbing issues between two types of languages. If dubbing isn't an issue and the characters mouths don't move at all or you can't see them, then I don't have a problem with english dubbing.

Almost always Japanese since the origonal director will have worked with those actors. I don't get why you would prefer English in a French setting.

I usually prefer Japanese voices, but if I hear the English VA FIRST and BEFORE I hear the Japanese VA, I tend to have a much more favorable impression of it when comparing the two. For example, I'd prefer Persona 4's JP and EN voiceover in equal measure, since I've heard both and can appreciate them both.

Chie sounds great on both sides, but at the same time I prefer Rise's English voice because I've never really liked the high-pitched screeching of anime idol characters (I could barely tolerate Akira Kogami in Lucky Star, for example. It also helps that Atlus is really great at localization.

On the other hand, I didn't like Valkyria Chronicles' English VA because I took the fool step of picking JP first, and now know that captain Varrot is voiced by Atsuko Tanaka, who is the sexiest female voice this side of Jennifer Hale.

Incidentally, I also prefer Metal Gear Solid's English VA.

Speaking of which, for subtitle-whores, what do you guys think of dubtitling, ala using dubbing scripts for subtitles rather than a direct translation?

I'd prefer it if it managed to capture the spirit, because there are times when a dubtitled script "reads" a lot better than a more direct translation, simply because the writers don't always have to consider things like stock phrases and word-for-word equivalents. Valkyria Chronicles is another good example. The dubtitles are very well-written.

As an anime fan, I wuv me some subtitles, but I'm not a fucking "OOO KAWAII" animu nut. If the dub is good, I'll listen to it (GREAT example of a sick superior dub: Cowboy Bebop, Metal Gear Solid).

@ unangbangkay
I'm of the opinion that as long as the director/producer of the anime supervises the dub, and his vision isn't wrecked in the dubbing process, it's ok. Sometimes they just change it way too much: I believe that films of any genre should try to be seen the way the creator intended it to be shown for the best effect.

I prefer English voices. I hold the belief that the Japanese voice work is probably bad too, we just don't know it because we don't speak it.

As far as Phantom Brave goes, this will be a nice option for EUR peoples who were stuck with a half-arsed release from Koei.

Well, that's nice of them, though from what I've seen, NIS (and Atlus) tend to have better dub casts than most games that make it over, so it's not as big of a concern to me. I'd play it in Japanese given the option anyway, unless the setting is distinctly Western (JRPG settings don't count for that in my mind).

@ Hito

Because unless they're speaking Japanese in Japan, I tend to find that English is a good substitute for Western languages in general. The anime Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is set in France, and while I did end up watching in in Japanese, I saw some of the English dub and found it to be very well done and more "natural" to my ears. If French people are speaking Japanese, being a native English speaker, I know something is very wrong there, but if they're speaking English, my brain just accepts it better, and most English dubs in those kind of settings manage to incorporate some flourishes, such as loanwords or French accents. Granted, I'd prefer to see an awesome French dub, but it seems the main source of quality in dubbing is either Japanese dubs or some English dubs.

The issue of mediocre voice acting in JRPGs (and games in general) has very little to do with the project's union status. A lot of VO actors work on both types of gigs, so it's not as though there are two totally distinct talent pools. When a game's spoken dialogue fails, it's usually because the actors were required to read their lines without benefit of any sort of in-the-moment context.

Example: "I don't think we're going to get it in time."

What's the antecedent of "it"? What's the proper delivery? Sad? Spiteful? Angry? Wry? The actor doesn't know, very often their lines have been culled out of the larger script so they can't even glance at the loops above or below for hints, and they slow down the session asking for clarification at their own peril. Time is money, so goes the cliche, and in a game recording session, that clock is always ticking.

It all depends on the quality of the actors for me. A great English dub is fine in my book. A terrible one can ruin a game for me, though. I have yet to struggle through Xenogears, as a perfect example.

If the Japanese actor is terrible as well, so be it. At least I don't understand what they're yelling to realize just how bad they are.

I personally think dubbing is the way to go when it comes to games like this.
