18 actually excuse my rather pessimistic attitude I have a rather nasty stomach bug/temperature, but I have played the recent editions trying to love them, and the original 4 are very different thematically and in terms of visual style (generations of doom did suck though), to the point at which I feel rather isolated as a fan
New areas, new bosses, new quest types, new class systems, tons of events, etc etc.
Though I will not likely change regions when it comes out West next year, I genuinely hope Sega West will keep up with the updates and changes. What happened with the western support of PSU was pretty abysmal and I hope there isn't a repeat.
@amtalx
There's a decent enough English patch out there that'll translate menu titles, quest objects, most system messages and alerts, and generic dialog for the game. It's definitely enough to get by and enjoy the game. I know I'm going to play the shit out of the game once it comes to NA because then I can enjoy the story aspect to it. I just wish the player rooms didn't require monthly payments, they're so much fun to mess around in and decorate.
I will say though, the game is a blast!
Not by much.
I don't think PSO2 is a bad game by any means (I'm looking forward to the game myself), but generally speaking free-to-play games attract the largest number of players in Asian markets.
Buying a 3ds or a PSVita/New PC?
Already said before, but now I really really need to get a job.
@Aunshi: I partially agree with you. Loved PS2 but never finished and PS4. But recently I started playing PSO:BB and as diferent as it is, it is a really adicting and awesome game, even with those dated mechanics. Seeing a new version with 2012's game mechanicas, tons of customization options and FREE makes me completely anxious for the western release.
PSO2 gives a strong positive initial impression, but it suffers the same issues as similar games, and runs out of steam quickly.
- Too much focus on equipment and rare items, especially as the primary "end-game" goal.
- The above results in an inflated in-game economy (they're trying to solve it the exact same way other games did, which didn't work for those games).
- Many talents/abilities/skills lack worthwhile purpose.
- Clunky user interface.
- Almost every system relies upon layers of random chance, which takes control away from the player and often makes the game frustrating. Some of these systems are unnecessarily very punishing and send players backwards.
- They keep introducing new goals, but they all involve replaying old content over and over and over until you become sick of it.
The game does have some good points, but it overall lacks polish. It could have been so much better. They've made the same stupid design mistakes that other similar games have.
Some people may defend the game's glaring faults by arguing "it could be worse", or "it was like that in previous Phantasy Star games". But that doesn't mean it couldn't be much better. I've never understood why people think "it could be worse", instead of "it could be better".
Some people also argue that "it's still early". They forget that the game has been in development and had several testing phases over several years. What we're seeing now has already undergone plenty of refinement. From what I've heard, it was even worse before. Sorry, but I don't have the patience to stick around while they continue to stumble over their poor game design choices and experimental solutions.
PSO2 is probably still worth experiencing, especially with friends. As for me, I'm sorely disappointed. I played every initial class to the level cap on four characters, and I have no motivation to go through the same content again just to properly experience the new classes. I've given up and moved to greener pastures. The two friends I convinced to play with me don't play anymore, either. Maybe I'll try again in a year or two.
For more info, check out these Japanese reviews. The overall scores vary greatly, but everyone seems to agree on the game's problems.
