Phantasy Star Collection comes to PS2 in Japan photo

You know Japan, I've been thinking, and realized I kind of hope you die some days. You get every freaking game I want while I sit over here in the US festering in my hopes that even one of these titles will get imported, and they never do, and I played Phantasy Star games faithfully as a child but what do I get, a get an INCOMPLETE COLLECTION ON THE GAMEBOY ADVANCE THAT DOES NOT CONTAIN PHANTASY STAR IV, WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT?

*deep breath*

Yeah, anyway, Japan gets Phantasy Star Collection for the PS2 on March 27th. I think there's more information, but I'm not sure what it is, exactly. From a translated Famitsu page:

Some no-claims bonus will be with the report/ratio like the possibility of accelerating the speed of play (displacements, texts, etc.) and the access to modes of difficulty a little easier than at the time.

I definitely don't read moonspeak, but looking at the screenshots (see gallery) you will see there is an option to set the game's difficulty to "very easy." So basically, what Sega has done here is take one of the most beautifully challenging RPG series of all time and given you an option to play it without challenge. Person at Sega who thought up this brilliant plan, I hope you die in a house fire.

Also interesting to note, a few of the screens look like the fabled text adventure Phantasy Stars that we talked about in last week's RFGO, so I can't help but wonder if those have been added into this version of the game too. You know, to add insult to injury that this game will never come out in America. Did I mention Phantasy Star Collection will retail for about $15? That price had better be wrong.

I hate you, Japan.

I wish it would come out here only if for PS & PS3 which I don't own. But currently am playing PS2 on my genese 32x cd, it rocks ^_^

And about japanese, well, I can speak it a bit, but since it takes me 3 hours to play 30min of FFV on the super famicom, I'm waiting at least until summer to re-try (I,ve got about 50 super famicom games!!!).

I have a learn to speak japanese book I bought in 1997 to play certain jap games on my chipped saturn. Shamefully I never did put the effort in, and that is my take on this. How willing am I to play jap only titles.
How willing are you to play these titles.

I would rather the PS3 remakes coming to the west.
SEGA can keep Phantasy Star Universe in Japan and release the others.

There was a Phantasy Star VI?

Even though the GBA collection is incomplete, between that and the Sega Genesis Collection on PS2/PSP you can have Phantasy Star I-IV in slightly easier to locate form. On a side note, I started Phantasy Star the other day for the first real time (as opposed to the 5 minutes of dicking around I did when I bought the GBA collection a year ago.)

The Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 has PSII-IV and you can snag that for under $20, if you don't want to play Phantasy Star I on GBA it'll inevitably hit the Wii VC for $5 or less.

Phantasy Star 4 is one of those games that were awesome at the time, but these days, it's just a little meh. Too much wandering up and down dungeons getting into tedious battles that drain your resources enough that you have to travel back up and then head right back down once you've re-stocked and rested. And the equipment system is STILL too much of a guessing game.

New Challenger said what I was going to say: get Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 and you get II, III, and IV. If you need Phantasy Star I that badly, the GBA port is decent enough. (PSI isn't actually on the Genesis collection, since it was released on the Master System.)

Wow, what a slap in the face to everyone who's owned a Genesis. I feel like making a blog about how I occasionally resent Japan...

The Sega Genesis collection is also available on PSP, so you can have II,III, & IV on the go

@JDUB X - I know! I've seen that it exists, but after trolling ebay and other various sources I still can't find a copy ;__;

After listening to the many nerd-gasms had during the RFGO podcast, I seriously considered picking up the Phantasy Star Collection on GBA, and probably will. If this came to the US on the PS2, would more than likely get it. You three made this series sound absolutely fascinating.

I think a PSP version of this would be awesome! I do disagree with you about the 'very easy' option though. I didn't used to understand it, but as I've gotten older and busier I appreciate some games having easier settings. Sometimes I want to play through a good JRPG, but I don't have the time to invest in grinding levels. An easier mode would be a great way for me to experience the story without taking all of the additional "grind" time. What good are games if we don't have time to play them? Also, if you don't want to use the easier mode you don't have to--it's win win.

Damn, that'd be sweet if it had all of them. The best we've gotten is probably the Sega Genesis Collection on PS2 and PSP that includes PS2-4.

Colette, thanks to the Phantasy Star Retroforce Go! I have rekindled my love for JRPGs. I picked up the GBA version of Phantasy Star Collection today and I like it (because it was dirt cheap). Thank you!
