The hot-ass Space Invaders Extreme that was released on Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable last year is coming to Xbox LIVE Arcade. That's good news, so if you have any of those party horns lying around, now's the time to blow on 'em.
Better news is that the XBLA version is going to feature a slew of multiplayer modes new for this new digital download version. Cooperative mode has up to four players working together on the same screen, sharing both score and lives. Score attack mode is a versus mode, with up to four players sharing a single screen, each with their own individual score and lives.
The craziest new mode of bunch is Survivor Mode. Here, each player gets his or her own screen, lives, and score. You'll be able to collect invaders in a "stock box"; shooting a passing UFO will send the invaders over to your opponents screens. Mayhem ensues, friendships are broken.
There's at trailer of it in action after the jump, with some thumping Space Invaders Extreme club music and sound effects. Because bass is extreme.
I've never played SI before. So I might just get this. However, that constant coin ting sound is a little much I think. You better be able to stop that; for everyones sake I think.
Nice sound effects, Mr. Chester. Retro effects were pretty awesome. They should make that an add-on for some current gen game - like Modern Warfare 2...
I do get a kick out of the retro effects but that dinging really would start to wear on you after a while. I dunno if it's my nostalgia talking to me of if I'm getting off on all the bright and shiny backgrounds effects, but I would still play it regardless of what Magnalon says.
I've played Space Invaders Extreme on the DS to be familiar with the nooks and stuff. I've also seen footage of the PSP version to be played.
This isn't SIE. This is an insult.
None of the original songs are here. The cannon, broad shot, and bomb shots sound exactly the same when they shouldn't. And that "ding" happens on every other shot, which, by the way, IS NOT MATCHING WITH THE MUSIC.
"Aren't the sounds because of the multiplayer mode?"
No, it sounds exactly the same if you saw the earlier videos for this. Just the sound of hearing EVERY OTHER shot and a droning baseline that goes nowhere.
"How many times can you remake a classic game? There must be a limit."
How many times have remakes been done right? Keep your mouth shut for SIE. It's brilliant.
I'm kind of torn. I loved the DS version of Extreme, but I thought I heard that the XBLA / PSN version will be 1200 pts / $15.
Not sure if I can justify re-buying a game I paid $20 for on the day of release LAST year for a $5 discount. New multiplayer SOUNDS good, but I know that I'd probably never have an opportunity to use it, so...

I don't see how they can mess up this badly.
