Because Microsoft can, Microsoft is unleashing downloadable pets over the Xbox LIVE Avatar Marketplace tomorrow.
According to Major Nelson, the platform publisher plans to release the following twelve pets for download: Large Dog, Pug Dog, Dog in Bag, Cat, Siamese Cat, Long Haired Cat, Goldfish, Guinea Pig, Monkey, Bird, Snake and Pony.
Each pet is said to cost an exact 240 Microsoft Points, which is considerably cheaper than a litter box. Or a proper shock stick.
We get the feeling that more precious animals will make their way to the Avatar Marketplace in the near future, but we’re still reeling from the serious lack of badger on the list. Fun fact: badgers are awesome pets. Just don’t try to feed one. Let it do its badger-thing, people.

If I could make my avatar into one big fuck-off blackbird, I would do that and then never think about it again.
Sad, but true.
Uh, not everyone has the means to care for pets...I used to live in a no pets environment, and now that I live in a cat friendly (only) place I still can't adopt one because of my partner's really bad allergies, and my own allergies that have gotten worse with age. I can look into doing animal socialization stuff, but alas I can't own a real pet as much as I'd love to help out the animal shelters.
I'm probably not going to buy one of these....but then again...I've always wanted a pug.
The cyber-pet concept in general just comes across as kind of sad to me, I guess. Seems like it would be more human to get a real one, for those who have the option.
I'm going to wait until they expand the variety of animals so I can switch between cats that look like either of my real ones before I lay down any money, though.
