Peter Moore unleashes the SMUG. Also, PS3 = Dreamcast now? photo

Like a child who's been served a bigger scoop of ice cream than his brother, Microsoft's Peter Moore is acting (to use the rhyming slang of my cockney brethren) quite the "shmug blunt" lately. In an interview found here, Moore derides the PS3 while showing off shamelessly and with gusto.

“I’ve walked a mile in those shoes. I’m digging up my tortured past here, but remember Dreamcast?”

The words of Peter Moore, doubtlessly said in suppressed laughter that caused his face to turn purple like some sort of insane, sentient eggplant. One gets the impression this is the best thing that's ever happened to the man, that he can be better at videogames than other people.

The Dreamcast comparison is intriguing though. Many people would say that the Dreamcast was an underrated system with a lot of good games. Oh wait, that must be what Peter meant.

Cast your eyes beyond the jump for more...

[Thanks to PacoDG as ever]

“Howard Stringer said ‘it’s not what’s possible that’s important, it’s what’s relevant’. I think that’s probably indicative of the PS3. It was possible to build a box that had Blu-ray and Cell and HDMI and everything else, but what was relevant was maybe a $399 price point and great games. I think we can all agree, and even Sony would potentially agree, that they miscalculated the global consumer’s appetite for the experience the offered at the price point they offered it at.”

He does have a point, evidenced by the fact that Sony's not doing all that great with their PS3. As we can all agree, they did eschew the relevant, that being actual software for their flashy Blu-Ray player.

Moore seems content that what Sony offer just isn't what people want. He talks about a "lounge," Microsoft's idea for a feature similar to Sony's Home that was discussed years ago, but eventually abandoned:

“Four years ago, we looked at the concept of a lounge where your avatar could wander around. We looked at an area where people could play their music, show people their videos. But it was not something that we felt worth pursuing. We made a decision that the user interface that we would put in to Xbox Live was one that got you in quickly, that allowed you to navigate where you wanted to go, and to do what you wanted to do. The concept of hanging out was something that, while we looked at it, we just didn’t think was something that our users wanted to do.

“We may be proven wrong. It may be proven that people want their 3D avatars to hang out with each other. But we made the decision that, right now, it’s about navigation and communication. We just think people want to communicate, they want to play games, they want to download movies, they want to listen to music. We’re not sure they want to hang around. PlayStation Home obviously caused a big stir at GDC but there’s a big difference between showing a demo and deploying it on a massive global basis with millions of people utilizing it.”

In the interview, Moore goes on to vaguely talk about the possibility of nabbing some of the last few heavy hitting third party titles and the company's commitment to Viva Pinata, despite admitting that the TV show spin-off was a steaming pile of kestrel puke. Not his exact words, but if you've ever had the misfortune of watching it, you'd agree.

As the interview closes, Mr. Smuggles defends the Xbox 360 Elite, citing that Microsoft's strategy is all about choice and personalization, and then finishes up on the subject of full game downloads over XBox Live.

“We’re still a ways from that. If you look at those games that are four of five Gigs, there are consumers that can probably absorb that. But retail still plays a very important role in this and the massive majority of people still want to be able to go to retail and walk away with a physical object. Will it happen? I’ve always said eventually of course it’s going to happen.”

It can safely be assumed that after the interview, Moore quickly hopped on his bicycle and rode to the park so he could shove Kaz Hirai around in front of girls and steal his lunch money.

Sorry the "LINKS" dont work.

This list represents the US / North American marketplace. There are many titles that are going Japan / Asia only that are exclusives (tons of RPGs, Anime Inspired Games, Japanese Pinball Simulators, etc.) that will only be available as imports to the US. European markets have some exclusive sports games that dovetail with their cultures.

From what I have gathered via various sources on the internet these will appear on PS3. They may appear on other Sony consoles and / or PCs, but NOT on non-Sony consoles. I did research a good portion of them to be sure they are not canceled. Some may not make it to the states and some may not be made. This list does got to show that Sony does have a stable of exclusive titles. I am not going to pretend this is flawless. Feel free to correct me here where I am wrong or add titles to this list. Just reply to the post and I will confirm the information and add / subtract titles as needed.

@Natedizzle

Hmm, a comprehensive list of craptastic titles with a few good ones and one or two great ones thrown in along with some that also have been rumored to be coming out on 360. You have some great journalistic prowess natedizzle!

And if you were paying attention to what people've been saying here you would notice that the Dreamcast did have a lots of games.
And I'm surprised that nobody has brought this point up in this discussion: according to Kotaku, Sony has lost 2 billion dollars through their videogame department. Seems to me that the ps3 is going to share the same fate as dreamcast to me.

Also on another note, I agree with what Moore says. To me, Home just looks like a prettied up version of Hobba hotel.

And also after looking over that list again, I noticed even more flaws with it, such as parappa the Rapper which has been announced exclusively for Wii, along with some that it looks like you got out of a ps2 back catalogue.

I don't know what you are talking about. The Dreamcast Dpads might as well have been made of razor blades. They were made of hard plastic and protruded like a cm out of the thing. My thumb was in so much pain after playing MvC2 on one of those things for like an hour. I hated them. Tho, don't get me wrong, This is not to say there are not dpads that have been as bad or worse, this is jsut to say I hated the DC ones hehe.

I don't really understand why it's alright for Peter Moore to be a smug prick (especially considering he blew a game launch and killed a company), but when Sony (the leader for 2 generations) gets a little arrogant it's a sin.

Can you say "double-standard?"

I hear ya. I had some serious blisters from Soul Caliber back in the day. Probably the worst blisters were back in the NES days when I played for the whole day. Marble Madness was a big cause of most of those blisters.

You M$ fanboys are all the same, call them out on their ps3 hate comment "itz gotz no gamz y0" by showing that there are in fact games, and then "thoz gamez R crappzor y0". And the cycle doesn't end.

The reason sony is losing money on there game division is because they are investing in the platform by taking a $250 loss on each console. If you think sony didn't expect this, you are a super space dumbass to the max extreme freestyle edition. Sony planned on it.

Actually there are 34 games for the ps3 now. At this time last year, the 360 had 39. So why is everyone saying there aren't any games? It's because M$ fanboys feel threatened so they get on forums and flame.

If anyone wants a perspective on the 360 vs. ps3 war that's actually informed and based on reason, read [url=http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/levelup/archive/2007/03/21/loot-redmond-we-have-a-problem-or-what-s-wrong-with-the-xbox-360.aspx]n'gai croal's take[url] on the whole affair. The Dreamcast I remember had some decent games, but not a very wide selection (see also Jaguar, Saturn, Gamecube, Xbox, Xbox360, PS3). The system was also well-known for Sega's bad decision to use a nearly-outdated media technology (see also N64, Xbox360) and a bulky controller (see also N64, Xbox, and to a slightly lesser extent, Xbox360).

At least PS3 has an excuse for the first one--it's still in its infancy.

This Peter Moore guy reminds me of one of those Boss fights where the guy taunts with the old "You've no idea who you're messing with," laughs his fool head off, then dies from an overdose of bad irony.

UltraViolence, true enough, but like the PS3, the Wii is in its infancy so it's going to lack titles for awhile. It also lacks the hardware to ever demand a larger storage medium, IMO. It's not a next-gen system, so there's no reason to expect it to behave like one.

Here's why I picked on the 360 this time. Nintendo's campaign focuses around enjoying the game. Sony's focuses on raw power and flashy graphics. Microsoft's focuses on Wii and PS3 bashing. I'm just using their own tactic against them for the sake of balance.

Don't bother labeling me as a fanboy--I leave those arguments to the younger crowd. I have all three current-gen systems, I buy games for all three, and I enjoy all three. I really do find it amusing when people get so bent out-of-shape around here over the so-called factions in the console wars. It kinda reminds me of the old ANT Live Games/Hecklers Online area from AOL (still sucks!!) 10 years ago.

@ Natedizzle
Yeah you got them at the forums. Keyword: FORUMS!!! You can't trust everything there. Half the stuff are rumors, 35 percent projects that will never see the light of day, and the other 15 percent have a 50/50 chance of being good or bad. Not to mention most of the stuff on that list sucks. I mean come on, Pursuit force, popolocrois, Atv offroad fury, coolboarders, etc. are all terrible games to begin with. I'm not saying the ps3 doesn't have any games, I'm saying they don't have any good games. There's Resistance sure, and God of war 3, and mgs 4 if it doesn't go multiplatform but not much else.
@ inderailment
How did you get MS fanboy out of that? I said I like my 360 AND Wii. It's not like I said"Microsoft Roxors! STFU NOOB!!"
No, and I realize that sony was planning in losing money with the ps3 for awhile, but two billion dollars? That's fucking ridiculous! I Highly doubt they expected to lose that much money from this.
Don't get me wrong, I want to see the ps3 succeed but Sony being such cocky assholes is hindering their performance and scaring away the once faithful, like me.
