Peter Moore unleashes the SMUG. Also, PS3 = Dreamcast now? photo

Like a child who's been served a bigger scoop of ice cream than his brother, Microsoft's Peter Moore is acting (to use the rhyming slang of my cockney brethren) quite the "shmug blunt" lately. In an interview found here, Moore derides the PS3 while showing off shamelessly and with gusto.

“I’ve walked a mile in those shoes. I’m digging up my tortured past here, but remember Dreamcast?”

The words of Peter Moore, doubtlessly said in suppressed laughter that caused his face to turn purple like some sort of insane, sentient eggplant. One gets the impression this is the best thing that's ever happened to the man, that he can be better at videogames than other people.

The Dreamcast comparison is intriguing though. Many people would say that the Dreamcast was an underrated system with a lot of good games. Oh wait, that must be what Peter meant.

Cast your eyes beyond the jump for more...

[Thanks to PacoDG as ever]

“Howard Stringer said ‘it’s not what’s possible that’s important, it’s what’s relevant’. I think that’s probably indicative of the PS3. It was possible to build a box that had Blu-ray and Cell and HDMI and everything else, but what was relevant was maybe a $399 price point and great games. I think we can all agree, and even Sony would potentially agree, that they miscalculated the global consumer’s appetite for the experience the offered at the price point they offered it at.”

He does have a point, evidenced by the fact that Sony's not doing all that great with their PS3. As we can all agree, they did eschew the relevant, that being actual software for their flashy Blu-Ray player.

Moore seems content that what Sony offer just isn't what people want. He talks about a "lounge," Microsoft's idea for a feature similar to Sony's Home that was discussed years ago, but eventually abandoned:

“Four years ago, we looked at the concept of a lounge where your avatar could wander around. We looked at an area where people could play their music, show people their videos. But it was not something that we felt worth pursuing. We made a decision that the user interface that we would put in to Xbox Live was one that got you in quickly, that allowed you to navigate where you wanted to go, and to do what you wanted to do. The concept of hanging out was something that, while we looked at it, we just didn’t think was something that our users wanted to do.

“We may be proven wrong. It may be proven that people want their 3D avatars to hang out with each other. But we made the decision that, right now, it’s about navigation and communication. We just think people want to communicate, they want to play games, they want to download movies, they want to listen to music. We’re not sure they want to hang around. PlayStation Home obviously caused a big stir at GDC but there’s a big difference between showing a demo and deploying it on a massive global basis with millions of people utilizing it.”

In the interview, Moore goes on to vaguely talk about the possibility of nabbing some of the last few heavy hitting third party titles and the company's commitment to Viva Pinata, despite admitting that the TV show spin-off was a steaming pile of kestrel puke. Not his exact words, but if you've ever had the misfortune of watching it, you'd agree.

As the interview closes, Mr. Smuggles defends the Xbox 360 Elite, citing that Microsoft's strategy is all about choice and personalization, and then finishes up on the subject of full game downloads over XBox Live.

“We’re still a ways from that. If you look at those games that are four of five Gigs, there are consumers that can probably absorb that. But retail still plays a very important role in this and the massive majority of people still want to be able to go to retail and walk away with a physical object. Will it happen? I’ve always said eventually of course it’s going to happen.”

It can safely be assumed that after the interview, Moore quickly hopped on his bicycle and rode to the park so he could shove Kaz Hirai around in front of girls and steal his lunch money.

Not quite unless you're only looking at sales. Dreamcast was a great machine at a great price and had great games even at launch. So no, don't hardly think so.

I liked the Home concept at first too but he does have a point...

Dreamcast was underrated in it's time. The thing was though, it could have been a case of maybe it was too much too soon. Coupled with the fact it didn't have enough games with mass appeal and you've got yourself a company crippler. The Dreamcast comparison was interesting as we all know what happened to Sega soon afterwards...

Everyone always says the Dreamcast was this awesome system with awesome games, but all i felt was one big "meh".

Soul Calibur and zombies just never did anything for me.

The two Power Stone games are bundled as a single one on the PSP, good deal methinks ;) But if you don't have a PSP yet I suggest you wait for the redesign that is bound to appear in the next 6-9 months.

I bought my Dreamcast when it hit $99 and never regretted it. Over the years I've gotten tons of great games for dirt cheap, along with almost every peripheral it had. First Sega system I owned. Now I really want to unpack it again.

Also, Dreamcast is probably one of the best systems ever. Its like a rare gem now. Most of the 1st games on PS2 were just ports from Dreamcast (ex:Evil Dead game that came out 2 years later on PS2)

PS2 having a dvd player and Dreamcast not having one killed the Dreamcast in Japan. Awkward time of launch killed it, it came out a year before anyone knew what the competition had to offer. Lots of things killed the Dreamcast that had nothing to do with what is hurting the PS3.

If the ps3 dies, (right, like the biggest investment sony has ever made is gonna be dropped by them) will everyone be saying what people say about the Dreamcast? NO.

haha, you are too much...I'm not really sure who you are, but maybe you should just stick to reviewing games and leave the animation up to the professionals. I'm sorry you have so much Haterade over it, but it pretty much is the premier CG kids show on TV right now.

Right, because those neighboring time slots to Pinata really features a lot of "quality" *rolls eyes* Man, that Yu-Gi-Oh really shows off some quality moving still images...it must take a whole 5 bucks to make an episode.

While I certainly don't think the ps3 and dreamcast are directly analogous, he does have a point about possibilities vs. relevancies. Sony, in their twice generational domination inspired arrogance have been trying to tell people what they want, rather than the other way around(remember that "get a second job" speech?). Also, I agree 100% with him about home.

Eh, PS3 doesn't seem similar to the DC at all.

DC: Great launch games, No EA, Launched before its competitors, etc.

PS3: Iffy launch games, EA, Launched after its competitors

Also, I just love his whole "Oh, we thought of Home like, a billion years ago, just like we thought of motion control, like, a trillion years ago. We did neither because THEY ARE TEH D00MED TO FAIL (we hope!)"

I never said Yu Gi Oh was a good show. I never said any cartoon ever made was quality. So you've now used both an argument from authority and a strawman argument in defending this "show". Collect all the logical fallacies and win a T-shirt!

For the record, my main problem with watching that thing was the voiceovers and the terrible cliche' characters that weren't amusing in the slightest. If your involvement was elsewhere, I'm not even besmirching your work.

Now, if we're going to draw comparisons, I can offer up Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life and Trap Door as quality animated kid shows that Viva Pinata is not. And for the record, I barely even care and I'm not having fun in trashing a cartoon of all things, I'm just not gonna pretend I found something watchable, because lying is what the Devil does to children at night.

I could obviously continue to argue over such things, but we all know that nobody wins an argument on the internet. I'm not about to prove my authorities to you, because quite frankly I could probably get in some trouble for misrepresentation, etc, etc...

Sorry to get you all heated up...it isn't a proud moment for myself included. It is good to see that at the very least you have some good taste in animation, although I couldn't quite call Ren and Stimpy a "children's" show.

Viva Pinata isn't perfect and it does have its flaws, but it is certainly better than some of the crap out there...that's for sure. For example, the show I am working on right now is terrible...but I won't say what it is.
