How dare he not name the new studio after an animal. Bullfrog, Lionhead and now 22 Cans? Be ashamed Peter, be ashamed.
Molyneux was once a brilliant developer with fresh ideas - most people don't remember or respect that.
He got too big for his britches, became infatuated with his own legend, and started to think antiquated ideas in an over-populated genre were actually "new and fresh".
Suck it MS, your slaying of Rare will haunt you FOREVER.
Regardless of how badly Molyneux handles hype, at the end of the day he's a visionary and decidedly lovable. Good luck to him, we need British developers to thrive.
"I want to make a game where you bury a soda can, come back later, and it'll sprout into a soda factory. Then you can purchase that soda factory, fart into the soda cans, have people drink your farts, and will fall in love with you. You'll be able to hold everyone's hands creating a Planet-Circumfernence long line of NPCs holding hands, and if you all go in one direction really fast, you'll be able to rewind time!"
MY LAST STUDIO SUCKED, THIS ONE'S GOING TO BE MUCH BETTER
Nope, I don't have a single fuck to give. Maybe it would be different had I grown up with a PC, and played some of the classic games he's known for, like Syndicate, Theme Park, Black & White, etc. But, I didn't. I found out about the man when he was endlessly hyping up his new game, Fable. I was hooked on everything he said.
Then, it finally came out. It did not live up to ANY of those expectations. Instead of being lengthy, decision based adventures, where everything you do has a reaction, and the world evolves around you, he's made THREE games that don't deliver anything remotely close to the promises he made.
Maybe one day he'll finally make that amazing game he's so good at hyping.
Kudos for calling Molyneux a "perpetual back peddler" the man made some of the most audacious claims regarding fable 2 & 3, you'd have thought he'd learn after getting death threats about the first Fable.
time will tell.
I only know that 22 cans will make aspersions to something awesome and then release a pathetic gimmick.
those people harking about big publishers destroying developers... just take a look at monolith and retro. it's not always the worst ting that can happen. it just depends on the publisher. anybody who gets into bed with EA must be stupid.
Lionhead hasn't and *can't* make good games since Microsoft bought them. It's Fable, Fable, Fable from here on out. Meanwhile the rest of us are still awaiting a decent Black & White followup...at the very least a Movies sequel, anything besides more "Barbie RPG".
In fairness he was part of Bullfrog who made Theme Park & Hospital, Dungeon Keeper, Syndicate and Populus to name a few so he's still alright by me.
Can you imagine the amount of baloney about his games we will have to endure now that he is his own boss once again and he is solely responsible for the success or failure of his own studio?
Because we know Molyneux can never fully deliver on anything he says he'll do.
Monolith Soft and Retro are owned by NINTENDO.
With Nintendo, Rare was one of the most successful developers ever, they shared a similar culture and Nintendo gave Rare plenty of space to finish their projects. Monolith are thriving under Nintendo, as they share a similar culture. Nintendo fixed Retro which was mismanaged to hell by their leadership at first and now Retro are thriving.
Microsoft are like the polar opposite of Nintendo, not even in the same league. They mismanaged Rare to it's destruction, cancelling tons of projects, firing employees, sending in MS managers that know nothing about games to take charge and ultimately forcing them onto Kinect crap.
Frankly gaming would be in a much healthier state if Nintendo bought out more developers...
