Peter Molyneux has 'learnt lesson' about over-promising photo

Pathological promiser Peter Molyneux has promised that he's learned his lesson about over-promising. The brain behind Fable III is famous for building up exaggerated hype over each of his games. He's also well known for promising that he's learned his lesson about over-promising. He promises that after every game he makes.

“I definitly have learnt my lesson about over-promising.” he promises. “There is a ton of work to do for sure, and the team are working hard. I truly believe.”

No he hasn't.

He said this for Fable I, then promptly over-hyped Fable II.

I can't wait for him to say it again after lackluster Fable III reviews!

"There's some very, very big things happening in Fable III, and it's really going to upset people. I'm really scared when I go out and tell people what it is [that] they're going to get super pissed off. They really are."

When you start promising your games are going to piss people off, you're not cured yet, Pete.

I don't want him to stop saying the things that he does. He's less a game designer and more of a dreamer. His vision and the ideas he has are a better contribution than the games themselves. And I love hearing him promise the moon, the way he does it, with all that passionate optimism. The more new ideas put out into the world of gaming, the better. Just because his game doesn't have trees growing in real time doesn't mean someone else's won't.

I saw the title and died a little inside. This guy's critical lack of self-awareness went past being funny and into "sad" territory a long time ago.

I always like Peter. The whole reason he says these things is because he really believes that they will happen! He is a guy that gets SO EXCITED about his games that he wants to talk about them. And I love that about the guy. I'd much rather him be passionate about what he does rather than the opposite.

I waffle on this. I decided to jump the Nintendo ship in favor of the Xbox last generation in large part to Peter's talk about Fable (then called Project Ego). That being the case, the first Fable (while fun) was one of my biggest gaming disappointments. However, I kind of forgive him because whether or not he's full of it about 'game features', he clearly loves his job and he does occasionally raise some interesting and valid points about game design.

Im so torn with Moly. Its great to promise the heavens and deliver the earth and I was kinda trusting. However i NEVER saw the first fable 2 combat "demo" until recently I just saw the 2nd dog one. Watch the first one. Its such bullshit. "notice the sword got stuck" "he won because he had the advantage" BULLSHIT!

The problem is when Peter says his trees will grow in real time, people expect it, and it never happens.

That's false advertising in so many words. And he said some ridiculous things near the release of Fable II that just plain weren't in the game. I can cite examples.

Also, he kinda has been around making games since I was little. And from Theme Park to Dungeon Keeper to Fable, I always found stuff to enjoy in them.

@ Magnalon

I don't really consider saying things you intend to put into a game that is still in development is false advertising. He isn't saying these things to mislead you, he's just telling you what he plans to do. It sucks that he doesn't actually deliver, but it's not deception by any means. It's like saying Bungie originally showing Halo as an RTS exclusive to the Mac was false advertising.

But Moly is fucking batshit bonkers. He needs to get a hold on his enthusiasm. It's a great quality, but not if you let it ruin fucking everything that comes out of your mouth.

There is nothing wrong with showing enthusiasm for your product.

Whoever says "fuck Peter Molyneux" is a cynical assknuckle that is basically saying "I believe everything PR and the government tell me, but I'm always disappointed when they don't meet expectations. And that's why I'm such a miserable fucktard."

Seriously folks sit back, chill out and just enjoy the ride.

To an extent, I agree with you, but this is what I'm saying!

There is a DISTINCT difference between:

"I hope one that I can make a game that has trees grow in real time. It may or may not be Fable."

and

"In Fable I, trees will grow in real time"

"In Fable II, trees will grow in real time"

"In Fable III, trees will grow in real time".

@ The Passenger -- Well, maybe Bungie developing Halo for Mac would have panned out, if, you know, Microsoft didn't buy them. I don't it's false advertising if a company is developing a product for your hardware and then they stop because they're bought out by a competitor.

@Maniac: good point.

As for his enthusiasm being a good thing -- I agree. I like ambitious developers. Peter's enthusiasm is fine. It's his mouth that tends to be the problem.

@The Passenger: "Also, if I were to find a magic lamp, I'd consider using one of my wishes on a miniature Peter Molyneux that I'd keep in a box and use to come up with really amazing things to say to my girlfriend."

Hahaha, this is MOLYNEUX we're talking about; he'd probably get you to promise her a yacht, a pet dolphin and a phonecall to Jesus Christ.

Its not that he overhypes aspects of gameplay, it's that every feature will redefine everything you thought previously. He needs to stop talking publicly, I find it really detracts from his moderately above average releases.

It's like hearing that Sterling will never troll again. It's like hearing that Lou Gehrig caught a disease so rare that they had to name it after him.

It's believable, I guess...but oh god, please don't let it be true. We need our heroes. Please tell me that Fable 3 can cure AIDS, substance abuse, and all forms of inequality facing our world today.

Lie to me, Molyneux. Speak to my gamer heart of how choices can matter, and how our decisions can carry over into the future. If your precious little lies can't save the gaming world, then what can?

If he pipes down a bit, I'll be disappointed, since the man is in fact my favorite developer, with regards to his imagination and wanting to do new, wild things in his games.

Just technology hasn't quite caught up with his ideas yet, twould seem.
