Ok.
And they aren't alone: nearly everyone is doing this, from Anarchy Reins to way of the samurai 4 to the last story.
As long as the dollar continues to shirk against the yen, this will grow and persist... which really sucks.-_-;
The thing is, Japan (and the rest of the world, really) pays double or more for games. Persona 4 Arena has an MSRP of 7,300 yen which is over 90 USD!!! If I was subjected to prices like that I would import all the time too especially considering how low the American dollar is to other currencies. We like to complain about $60 games but we have the cheapest games out of everyone.
I'm really concerned that the internet gaming crowd in general has become of a unified mindset that if any gaming company does something that's disliked, no matter how small or practical it is, then they're the enemy and it's time to pull out the guns and shovels. In this particular case, with the two versions releasing within two weeks of each other, I don't see the big deal.
not to mention why hide it near the release??? it was only been discovered by a forum member so why even hide it late in the game??
still already pre ordered it and had my copy secured and ready to go.
i just hope companies won't start a sudden release of region lock games.
and that's why i love PS3, PSP, and DS. region free is fucking awesome and should stay forever.
also if the price is the issue, why can't they just lower the price??
sure we live in a terrible economy time but the prices is just ridiculous especially in japan and australia.
not to mention usually a game get's discounted around 25% after the first 2-3 months or sometimes in one month.
remember FFXIII?? that game price drop after 1 month and as low as $20
in japan
then again it's more of a fan reaction though.
Getting other studios to explain the online pass or Nintendo to explain region lock oils like trying to get blood out of a rock.
Atlus' history has earned them the benefit of a doubt.
A simple region lock is almost merciful compared to what they could have done.
No buy from me, Atlus. The game is probably awesome, but I won't support this awful business practice.
Get a god damned life if you're really that desperate for conflict.
With the huge margin between currencies, there is hardly "a tiny bit" at stake here. The Japanese economy is in the can and not a single gamer outside of Japan sympathizes with them. They are all out for themselves, "Oh, region locks are the devil," "We are one world order and we need to move on," when in reality, the industry was built to have region locks from day one. The gaming industry as we know it needs to die a horrible, flaming death if we're to do away with region coding for good.
This experience by the way comes from both shipping stuff from Japan and too Japan and importing games from the US into Europe. Their reasoning doesn't hold any ground.
besides, who got shafted were the japanese who pay more for the game, so we can't really complain.
Doing nothing is sort of a bad move for them, so this is really a case of you can only have so much.
"So we are not trying to control you, we just want to control which market you spend your money in to maximize profits"
Maybe PR bullshit does not translate well, cause that very much still says "fuck you fans, thanks for making us the powerhouse we are today"
If it's as much of a hassle as you say it is, why do so many gamers do it anyway to the point that the publishers saw this decision as a necessity?
They gave gamers what they wanted, but had to make this move in response. Fans get angry anyways. Atlus then releases a heartfelt statement about it (which VERY few companies would do) explaining their actions and opening up a dialogue. Fans get angry anyways.
Wow...
Here's the deal: while the respective economies of the US and Japan are in their current state, if you want dual audio and simultaneous releases, you'll get region-locked games. Otherwise the publisher will be leaving a ton of money on the table.
If it weren't region locked, they would earn less money, retailers in Japan would be pissed off and could refuse to stock future games, etc.
I will admit that Atlus did a lot to make it less impactful here with the extra language tracks and almost simultaneous global release, which I commend them for. I still can't really believe that that many japanese people would import the game - The savings are just not worth the headache. If there are any savings at all.
Basic business acumen of course, but a lack thereof in the response Atlus provided was my point I suppose
If it's business sense you want, I woulda said, "You will buy this region-locked title and you will like it." Those who do are where the real money is.
Holy fuck, when Atlus start taking business lessons from Activision and EA?
This is incredibly sleazy.
If they're willing to fuck over one region now, who's to say they won't fuck over another region (us) in the future?
Will not support this.
Region-locking is stupid, but in cases like this I don't think it's a problem. The game is released in all territories and the delay between different territory release dates is tolerable. It's a whole different matter if those criteria are not being met.
It's not a good thing that it's region coded, but I'll gladly take a region coded game if it means I can play it with dual audio and all the other goodies we true Atlus fans have been asking them for all this time.
Atlus have a right to this very very reasonable business decision. Atlas Japan and Atlas America do have to make sure they make money in their respective regions, because you know, they're fucking businesses. So if they feel region-locking the games, and if the games are similar, have dual audio and all that, and coming out within two weeks from each other, what is the problem?
Yeah, there IS no problem. Just people crying and whining over literally nothing. If anything, this doesn't even hurt Americans! We get the cheaper version of the game! Why are you whining?!
Region locking only becomes an issue when you miss out on a game entirely because of it.
It is actually rather cheap, at least for 1 game. And to others, I'm pretty sure there are NO import taxes or tarrifs below a certain value point between America and Japan.
I have imported a few games and other products from Japan, and have never(to my recollection) had to pay extra duties or taxes. Shipping is usually determined by weight, and games don't weigh that much, so isn't that expensive.
I find it hard to believe that it would be drastically different from America to Japan.
How fucking annoying.
