Persona 3 Portable announced, adds new character photo

Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby!

Persona 3 is going portable, jumping from the PlayStation 2 to the PSP. This was confirmed in the latest Famitsu, who also says that there will be a new main character -- a female. In the scan, you can see this main character as well as what appears to be a female persona. We're with Siliconera in saying that this looks like a female Orpheus. I don't know what all of this is about, but I hope a sex change was not involved.

So that's great: a portable Persona 3 is coming, following up the excellent (and upcoming) Persona 1. But where the hell is Persona 2? I've been daydreaming of getting both parts of the Persona 2 story on one UMD. I think they're holding out on us.

As far as Persona 3 Portable is concerned, there's no other details or release dates. I'd say that you can be pretty sure that Atlus USA is going to pick this one up for us.

[Update: Phoenix Gamma sends us a second scan. It doesn't tell us much, but it looks cool! I see the telemarketer guy in there. Oh, and Coffeesash made us this P3P logo based on the scan.]

[Update 2: Destructoid's Unloved Krow sends us a new scan, this time showing both the male and female main characters. Also, a release date of November 1st is given for Japan.]

[Update 3: Kotaku reports that you will be able to control all your party members manually.]

I got P3FES from a retailer, and am still in, what, September? Then I got a very good condition of the original release, for the artbook and CD more than anything. Now my 70+ hours and counting are all NULLIFIED by THIS?! FLARGLEDARGLECRAPPITTYPOOG!! There better be a save transfer system in place (like P3 -> P3FES), 'cause this would be too damn much.

Gah, not that it's a concern right now, since P1 and KHDays are coming up, and I need to get a jorb for buying purposes...

Persona 2 was a Japan-exclusive.....there is a fan-translation around the web.. :) ppl who played the translated Persona 2 version said that this is still the best persona-part ever and one of the best rpg ever.

I have no idea on what to think of all this... Can you choose the MC's gender now (why else would she have Orpheus)? Is she just a new character? Is this story new or old? And why does Igor have a new assisstent?

It looks like it's just an alternate main character. Shin Megami Tensei has a long history of offering such a choice in many of its games, just never in the Persona sub-series. And while it's nice that PSP owners can get this game, I do question the point of it - I feel that are very few PSP owners who don't also own a PS2. And did you really need any more content, besides the inevitably adapted relationships? I mean, the original game is easily over 100 hours, and the FES addition is another 30.

I just played Persona 2: Innocent Sin this summer, and it was totally amazing. The fan-translation work is top-notch, and while the patch would glitch out on me occasionally, I was happy to take a few lumps along the way. I'm now playing Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, which did see a US release, and though it's a good enough translation by Atlus (before they got renowned for a stellar localization team), I actually prefer the fan-translation of the first half.

Incidentally, this new girl looks like one of the assistants in the Kuzunoha Detective Agency in Persona 2, who is apparently a cameo by the female lead from Shin Megami Tensei If..., the in-series inspiration for Persona.

After two quick Google searches I've found that the UMD caries a maximum capacity of 1.8 GB.
I found on a more nefarious site that the ISO of Persona 3 FES is 4.28 GB.

Atlus has some work ahead of them.

As I said in Krow's post, I just don't know if I have another 70 hours of P3 in me. There's going to have to be some MAJOR, MAJOR changes to get me to play this again.

I'm ready to move on, Atlus. More stuff like Strange Journey, and less rehashes of the same stuff.

And Dale? Where exactly are you seeing Tanaka in there? I see Hidoshi, Fuuka, and a new male Velvet room assistant, but no Tanaka.

Oh I get it when you start the game you get to choose a boy, or a girl and based on the choice things in the world reflect it, like if your a girl you get boyfriends, and Elizabeth would would now be guy.

So long as it comes on UMD, I'll so buy it. I don't this would sell on PSP Go, but I'm sure it would be nice if we got both choices.

Is it just me, or do a lot of smaller-scale Japanese games get announced and released fairly quickly in Japan? Also, the fact that Persona 3 is being released on the PSP begs with question "Why did they not do a full 3D remake of the original Persona?" But meh. I'm happy about it :D Will probably buy it if it gets released in the US, as I will import like I will have to do with Devil Survivor and probably the Persona remake. I just hope that the implament some of Persona 4's battle gameplay instead, because P4 was a definate improvement over P3. BUT WHERE IS MY PERSONA 2s :(? I think everyone wants them. Come on Atlus. Pretty please <3?

I would gladly pick this up if it came stateside since I've been meaning to replay 3 once again. Although I might skip the Female route they replace Elizabeth.... the game just wouldn't be the same without her.
