Peripherally Speaking: NERF Armor for DS Lite photo

[Peripherally Speaking is a new series of reviews in which we take a look at hardware and peripherals designed to improve the gaming experience, from handheld accessories to home console enhancements.]

We all know the story with handheld gaming platforms. They look sleek, they look stylish, but they also look about as fragile as an eggshell in a nest of newspaper. Portable gaming systems inevitably suffer from scuffs, scratches and worse over time, which is why many companies have stepped in like chivalrous knights to provide a protective answer to our woes and, of course, cash in on our paranoia.

Enter PDP and the NERF Armor for DS Lite. Designed to absorb the most traumatic of shocks, the NERF Armor takes the damage so your DS doesn't have to. Is this the solution that worried DS owners have been looking for, or does the NERF Armor do more harm than good? Read on as we review the NERF Armor for DS Lite.

NERF Armor for DS Lite
Company: PDP
MSRP: $14.99

The first thing I noticed about the NERF Armor was how strongly it smelled of chemicals, which should appeal to all fans of solvent abuse right off the bat. The soft squidgy, yet unmistakably hard feel provides a good idea of what sharing a bed with Tim Curry might be like, which is also a bonus. However, prolonged contact with the rubbery surface of the Armor makes one's hands feel rather slimy, like you've actually been sharing a bed with Jade Goody's mum. Not so good.

The Armor is certainly robust and strong, with the cushioning protector able to withstand plenty of drops. There's no denying that in terms of protection, the NERF Armor will definitely see the job done. The Armor is a little top heavy though, which makes the DS itself feel unwieldy to hold when playing on the go. The whole package will make your DS Lite feel much heavier and more cumbersome to play, so if you've always been attracted to the "Lite" part of the DS Lite, you might want to find a less intrusive protection method.

Speaking of intrusive, here's the real problem with the NERF Armor -- it is impossible to remove once you've put it on your DS. It clips on snugly around the DS but, like an overzealous girlfriend, won't let go once it's sunk its claws in. Attempting to "pop" the DS out of the armor led to the sponge-like coating ripping off of the plastic case, while trying to pull the plastic itself away caused me to accidentally start prying the DS Lite's own plastic coating off of the machine.

I tried to push the DS Lite up through the opening in the hinge, but it was beginning the push the DS hinge back so far I feared it would snap my console in two. After an hour of trying to rescue my now thoroughly trapped DS, I resorted to attempting the prize the poor bastard out with a knife. Unfortunately, the knife slipped and now I have a crack in my DS, where the volume control rests. If I had not already upgraded to a DSi, I would be incredibly pissed off at this point, although this is still very annoying.

As you can see from the picture, I have so far managed to get half of the NERF Armor away from my DS Lite, as the casing snapped in two when I mounted one last heroic effort to free my poor machine. At the time of writing, the top half of the NERF Armor is still clinging like a retard's handshake to my DS, and I'm too frightened of causing further damage to launch a second rescue attempt.

On a positive note, it's fairly safe to say that the NERF Armor will definitely protect your DS, on the simple strength that it will NEVER come off without the fight of your life. It was believed that cockroaches would be the only thing to survive a nuclear holocaust. It would now appear that the cockroaches will have some company with these frigging things.

While some may love the fact that these Iron Maidens will attach themselves to a console until all of humanity is dead, my own  story carries with it the rather sad irony that, had I never encountered the NERF Armor, my DS Lite would not be damaged right now. Thanks to this product, I have a broken DS with half an armor casing stuck to it, and a sense of morose regret that I'll carry to the grave.

If I were you, I'd definitely steer clear of this one unless you wish to have your DS Lite bonded to an exoskeleton until the end of days.

So it encases almost the entire thing in Nerf foam, except for arguably the most delicate part of the DS Lite: the hinge. The hell?

I am jealous of Jim's lime green DS. I'm waiting for a lime DSi before I upgrade.

@eternalplayer2345 it should depend on the peripheral, I have a beautiful case on my psp 2k that is an overall body sheild and barely adds to the thickness and has been on it since about a week after the psp 2k launched- I also have a set of metal retractable styluses that I use with my ds that are way better than the nintendo ones-

I hate cases like this that dont come off. I got a similar style one for my phone (HTC Fuze) and whenever i have to take off the case to switch SD cards im afraid of breaking the phone. I try to never take the case off unless absolutely necessary.

i had one of these when i HAD a DSlite, the trick to removing them is to start at the hinge piece(where they connect together) for the top half, then holding in the L/R shoulder buttons - pop off the bottom piece.

Bought this mainly of hand cramps, the soft NERF covering was slightly removable (in spots)-but i never attempted to remove it.

I have one on my DSLite and I can get it off really easily when I need to. You pop off the hinges, slide the top straight off, then leave the top open and hold the bottom case with your hands and leave your thumbs on the hinges, push up and free it from the armor. Easy peasy to me.

But I DID have to work with it the first time a bit to figure it out.

I like it well enough but you're right in that it's not super portable that way, But where I work it's nice to have the added protection.

I thought Jim was referring to you're childish remark as a whole, rather than just your grammar. In my opinion, it's pretty moronic buying one of these things for personal use in the first place.

WTF I thought the DSLite was to make the DS more compact and "portable". This NERF cases makes it bigger than my old school silver DS(I know your jealous). Instead of getting this how about we just try not dropping the DS. I know it is hard for some of you (especially after reading some of the comments) but just keep a firm grip on it and wear the damn wrist strap. I mean really haven't you people realised how important a wrist strap can be after the whole Wii-mote debacle.

@Chris

DSLite doesn't come with a wrist strap so your solution fails. DS Phat came with a wrist strap/thumb stylus. You can order those DS Phat wrist straps on Nintendo's website for a couple bucks.

More than half of this review was just you trying to take the thing off.

jeez.

my 5 year old nephew has one of these on his DS (i know, he shouldn't even fucking have a ds to begin with) and he takes it off and puts it on with no problems.

u just suk dood
but yeah, it does the job. he drops that thing all the fucking time and it's still workin fine with no cracks or anything. id say the "forget it" grade was uncalled for :/
thats like you giving a game a bad score because you couldn't finish it

I think the best part of this is that people are claiming it's easy to remove like they were in my house. I tried the easy method of removal someone posted in this thread and it DID NOT WORK. Maybe yours didn't clip on so tightly, but I tried every which way and it does not come off. It's also a very common problem, too. I researched this and found a lot of complaints about the NERF Armor.

I think best of all was the guy on GoNintendo who disputes that my NERF Armor smells of chemicals. He can come here and fucking smell it, because until Internet commenters learn the mutant gift of being able to smell through other peoples' noses, I refuse to be disputed on that issue.

I VOTE Jim is only allowed to review nice smelling pre-cut flowers and open wraper candy bars anymore. What's next you get some DS sticker covers put them on the system and then complain about them leaving "stickyicky" when u try and peal them off. The bloody point is to LEAVE IT ON and parents want the damn thing to stay on and not have Bobby take the thing off and break it. This is one the better protective cases that all little kids should have.
