Peripherally Speaking: FPS Freek photo

I don’t possess the FPS skills of a Mountain Dew-amped 12-year-old. The things he can do are beyond my understanding. It’s like he’s jacked in to the game’s Matrix. Lines and lines of green code spill down his television screen, giving him the ability to see the all of the battlefield and predict your actions. His ability to crack a skull from across the map (while jumping, no less) and win close-quarters combat with the slightest twist of the analog sticks infuriates me. I want to win. Always.

I’ve reached my ceiling and I’m starting to suck more. Like the aging athlete, I’m looking for an edge. HGH does nothing for the videogame player, but manufacturers are crafting relatable stuff. It’s all about the controller.

When we received the FPS Freek analog nubs from Kontrol Freek, I began hoping that they could give me a simple advantage. I received nothing of the kind.

Hit the break for the review.

FPS Freek for the Xbox 360 controller
Company: Kontrol Freek
MSRP: $9.99

Installation is easy enough. Just snap them over the controller’s existing nubs. The firm white bases are slightly larger than Microsoft’s nubs, making the fit snug. If that wasn't enough, plastic teeth bolster the connection.

These things don't look pretty on an Elite Xbox 360 controller. They stick out like a dandelion in a field of red roses. The manufacturer obviously designed this product to be used with the standard controller. The nubs are more tasteful than the stand -- they’re a deeper shade of gray. They’re also a few millimeters larger and contain many more bumps to prevent sweaty fingers from slipping.

The point of this device is to give you enhanced fluid control of both axes, and therefore, better accuracy. The bases and nubs transform the standard nubs into towering sticks. Because of the increased length, the sticks become looser and you gain enhanced leverage. Essentially, this is a player-side way of increasing the Y and X axes’ turning speed -- something that all FPS veterans seem to do in the game.

I used these things over the course of fifteen or so days with EA DICE’s downloadable title Battlefield 1943. While the looser rotation is noticeable, I didn’t find myself winning one-on-one battles with ease or experiencing greater success on the digital fields of battle. I think this is attributable to two things: (1) it doesn’t work, and (2) axes can be customized in the game. It’s rare to see a competitive title that forbids stick movement customization; however, I believe that these add-ons are best suited for this kind of restricted environment. Only in this scenario would the looser movement win the day.

But here’s the bigger problem: removing the nubs is a dangerous task. After the fifteen-day period, I removed the nubs to play Madden NFL 10 and broke my controller in the process. The right-hand nub felt fused to the right analog stick; when I pulled forcefully, the joint in the controller cracked and gave in. Fifty bucks down the hole.

I can’t confirm this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the length boost that the artificial nubs give the controller can put excess force on both analog stick joints. After extended use, a person might end up with my dilemma without even bothering to remove the nubs, which by the way, needs to happen whenever you plan to play a game that isn’t an FPS. The things are reflective of the genre and the specific movements required for it. Games like Madden or Mass Effect become harder to play with these babies attached.

Before I attached the FPS Freek, I believed that the nubs would give me an advantage. Through careful testing, I noticed that it hadn’t. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but the real offensive factor here -- other than the product not working -- is the fact that it can break your expensive Microsoft-certified controllers. Steer away from this and find a way to live with your FPS suckiness. It'll be alright, man. We all blow at something.

yeah those don't look good or useful at all in my opinion. The only controller add on I like are the trigger add ons for the dualshock 3. work great and to the untrained eye you can't even tell they're added on.

Ouch, sorry to hear about your controller. I knew just by looking at them that they wouldn't work, they look rather uncomfortable.

Hahaha... for some reason these things made me crack up.

I really can't stand playing FPS games with analog sticks and these things certainly aren't going to change that.

I tape grapes and tacks to my controllers to win at games.

The tacks stick up of course out of the taped grapes and I jab my thumbs into them for the most responsive all inolving video game experience known to man and woman. You really get to feel the action on screen shoot through your hands, arms and thumbs as you make every detailed move a reality as you win more at games.

I think I could sell this.....lol

I think you might have missed the point of these, Brad. They're meant to be used in tandem with upping the stick sensitivity, so that you can get the turning speed from high sensitivity, but then also the added control for making minute adjustments afforded by the longer length of the stick.

That said, my friend had an original Xbox Nyko AirFlo controller with long sticks, and everybody hated that thing, because it just didn't feel right. Couple that with the fact that these bust your standard analog sticks should you ever remove it, and the final word on it doesn't change. Don't buy these.

Are there any upgrades to the analogs or modded controllers out there which give increased responsiveness or are more sensitive? At the least, I would simply prefer a wider, more concave nub for my 360 analogs.

Shouldn't they make a Fighting Game Freek or something? That way the d-pad can be fixed.

The problems with the dpad are more severe than an extension can fix. Plus if you did that it would no longer be a D-pad.

Well after reading all this it cracks me up you used a game several years old that is sluggish in game play and has no accuracy at all. BattleField 1943 is a bad game when it comes to accuracy overall. i can almost assure you if you were to play cod 4 or halo for a week without the product, then use it for a week, your game would improve as many other gamers has. Take team fear, num 1 cod4 team, 3 of 4 of them use the product, ask them if they work, thanks for the review

Yea, the perfect way to get people to buy your product is explain how lame the reviewer is and tell everyone how 3 out of 4 douchebags use your product every day.

@ChickenNow: 1943 does have shit netcode and a lot of hopeful spamming of the trigger. I would've tested it with CoD4 (despite its tendency to lag, aiming does actually count for something).

Still, I couldn't tell you if these work or not as I haven't tried them.

yeah i was calling the game lame, not the reviewer. and yeah it is 1943, i know this, but same maps, same game with graphic changes, still sluggish and bad. i can go from cod with a 3:1 k:d and into bf 1943 and not kill anyone with a gun, just tanks, the gun fights in the game are a joke, but oh well, everyone has a preference, and he didnt like the product, so cool, but he should try another game with them before scrapping them, thats all im saying.

I'm sure buying and installing a set of these sticks is easier than modding the 360 controller with the old fatty's sticks. Nothing is going to replace the m&k for me, though.

Battlefield 1943 launched this summer. It's not old by anything except for internet standards, in which one internet day equals a week, which is silly.

It's usually not the Mountain Dew that gives the seemingly god-like FPS player the edge, it's his aim-bots and wall hacks.

That really sucks, about the controller breaking. I would be pretty pissed purchasing these sticks, for them not to do anything only to have them waste even more money on a new controller.

Just one question, Brad: Why would these get in the way while playing Mass Effect? For all its RPG elements, Mass Effect really is by and large a third-person shooter. Shouldn't an add-on designed for FPS games work to the same ends in a third-person shooter?

Other than that, very informative article. I'll be sure to steer clear.

I actually don't have any problems with either the analog sticks or the D-pad. Actually, my brother uses too much force when he plays so both of my analog sticks on both of my controllers are now not quite functioning properly. I'll go left, then let off the stick and keep going left very slowly. My brother has ruined three controllers.

I love the FPS Freek. I only use one, on the right stick. If you just try pointing from one thing to the other in rapid succession in, say, Call of Duty, with and without the FPS Freek, you'll see that the reduced resistance of the stick does help with aiming.

As for breaking the controller, make sure you're following the directions that come with the package. I've taken them off at least a dozen times and not had a problem. Also, if you take them off and the analog stick isn't springy, you've just pulled it up a little bit. Push it back down and it will be back to normal.
