Perfect Dark XBLA looks better than the original photo

Perfect Dark is still slated to hit Xbox LIVE Arcade at some point this winter. Perhaps as a reminder of its eventual arrival or to show off the brilliant texture work by developer 4J Studios, Rare released one bit of art and two additional images of the game in motion. It still looks terrible, but at least it’s a smooth kind of terrible.

Released in the year 2000 on the Nintendo 64, Perfect Dark was the legendary follow-up to Rare’s other shooter, Goldeneye. This port was announced back at E3 2009 after being rumored for ages.

Perfect Dark XBLA is the full game. It will launch with HD visuals and online cooperative multiplayer. On top of that, 4J Studios is planning to have the game running at a blistering 60 frames-per-second. We'll see how that will work in the game's favor after it's released.

Still feeling this port, guys? Let us know what you think.

It's guaranteed to still be tons better than Perfect Dark Zero. That's good enough for me.

The controls should be better so it should now be playable. I just hope they changed more than the control and graphics.

As long as they include all the options in multiplayer in the original this will be great, but I can easily see them just doing what every other fps dose and putting in a bunch of crappy playlists.

I remember these games! I remember not playing them because I was playing far superior FPS's on PC.

I'm really looking forward to this, hopefully they'll release it sooner rather than later, because if they hang about too long, they'll be sitting pretty in COD6/AssCreed2/L4D2/Borderlands territory, and that might make an aged FPS suffer.

I am also concerned about destroying my perfect memories of this, a month or so ago I dug out Goldeneye and time has not been a kind benefactor to that poor old chap.

Still waiting for Goldeneye..... but this was a good game too. I remember having fun setting up multiplayer matches using bots that looked like the Matrix crew.

I just hope the multiplayer is still good - the singleplayer game was pretty lame but my god did I play a ton of 4-person.

Sexy. Hopefully this'll amp up interest in PD and MS/Rare will pull together a decent team for a good new Perfect Dark game.

FUCK Perfect Dark.

Goldeneye>>>>>

It also didn't have an incredibly shitty frame rate, and a complete bland setting. Only a few of my friends in my group liked Perfect Dark more: the rest of us just kept playing Goldeneye for months on end.

I love this game, I feel like it really slowed down once the aliens came in. I'll still be getting it right away and playing the crap out of it.

They should "update" it to ONLY have online multiplayer! Screw local multiplayer, thats for people with REAL friends. Now it can be just like current-gen games!

I'm actually pretty excited for this, though having been playing Perfect Dark on Project64 in 1080p, will this be a significant step up?

Speaking of which: Project64 with a 360 controller is a goldmine. Finally i can play Goldeneye in glorious HD, with proper FPS controls! Unsurprisingly this makes it both very easy and very ugly. *shudder*

Also, will I need an Expansion Pak to play this?

The framerate in the original was absolute fucking agony, and yet it was still (IMO) the best shooter ever made.

This smoothened-out port can only improve from there. I can't fucking wait. :D

Frankly, I thought the singleplayer and multiplayer were equally awesome (for its time). But, oh, that's right: we're only allowed to give good reviews to remakes of games from the NES/SNES era, so it probably won't hold well critically. Include the 'tards that think Goldeneye is a better game because their parents wouldn't let them play an M-rated Rareware game (and thus only got to play it after it was outdated), and it'll hold up about as well as Banjoe Tooie XBLA on Meta.

I wouldn't bank on it. I think the best you could hope for is they don't charge for it as if it was made from scratch.

I guess I did. Why did I waste my time playing 32-player Quake1 TeamFortress when I could have been living it up playing 4-player splitscreen? A chicken hawk floats over, looking for home. I have wasted my life.

Picture the crappy TV's we had back then, how could we even see what was goin on in all the explosions 10 years ago!

I'll definitely get it. It was a great pastime for my friends and I back in the '64 days. Given that most of us have 360s now, this is a must buy for me.

Fine game for its time; doesn't hold a candle to today's FPSs. At least it (probably) won't slow down to ten frames per second when there's an explosion on screen.

Yes, like Megaman 9 holds a candle to most modern 2D sidescrollers. You can't criticize a game purely because you aren't deriving nostalgia from it. Most critics don't seem to understand this at all.

As far as critics go, it's 'ok' to like a game based purely on nostalgia as long as YOU are the one deriving that nostalgia (...hypothetically-speaking, I'm not referring to you specifically, Dexter). Obviously Megaman 9, or Perfect Dark, isn't going to be held in high-esteem by most modern gamers.

Just curious, but since when did player count have anything to do with 'fun'? I'm sorry, but you can't make derogatory comments about a game for a system you didn't own(DURING the N64 era).

I know that you haven't really played PD simply because you're either someone trying to 'stand out from the crowd' or simple because you were financially-limited to the PC route.

Frankly, I started playing Half-Life before Perfect Dark on an old Pentium laptop, and I felt PD was a better game in all aspects.

I would buy this game if I didn't already have it on N64. Yeah I understand there's Xbox Live functionality but the last time I played my xbox was a long tim ago. That said this does look pretty, and if it's a smooth as they say it is that's a big plus, but doing everything again? I spent so much time on that game I dunno if I could be bothered.

But it is my favourite game, with a new control scheme.

Fuck it I'll buy it.
