Peregrine looks friggin' sweet photo

I've held on to this for a little while now because I didn't want it to get lost in everything that came out of E3. I was surprised that I didn't really hear anybody talking about it at the show. That up there is the Peregrine and, while it looks like a sleeker version of the Power Glove, this thing appears to actually do what it claims.

Peregrine is a USB input device for mapping keyboard commands. Three contacts are found on the tip of the thumb, the meat of the thumb and along the palm. Running all along the fingers are conductive leads -- up to four per finger -- that, when touched to one of the contact points, issues the mapped command for that combination of lead and contact. There are over thirty combinations (far more are possible but impractical from an accuracy standpoint).

And see that little pad thing on the back of the glove? That's the heart of the device. It attaches magnetically so that users won't have to remove the glove to make a fridge or bathroom run. It also stores all of the configuration settings in flash memory so that the Peregrine can be taken to any computer that uses a keyboard and work right away.

Originally designed for the purpose of data entry using two gloves, it was determined that the learning curve was too great when trying to represent the entire keyboard but the possibilities for RTS and even MMO gamers are very intriguing. I, for one, can't wait to try one out when it releases in fall of this year. It's currently planned to retail at $129.99.

What do you guys think? Big pimpin' or big waste of time?

Seems really expensive!

I think it could work for some genres, but hardcore MMOers most likely wouldn't go for it. All I could think of it being useful for in hardcore raiding is for WoW Paladins, so they can heal with one hand and beat off with the other.

Wait. So you can program hot keys to it then? Or just basically any keyboard command? As I usually do, I'm wondering how I could turn this into a musical instrument but yeah, sounds pretty cool.

I needs to see a demo video. The glove by itself isn't so impressive, but maybe seeing it in action...

Sounds neat, but it's not tech I'd see myself using any time soon.

It's interesting but I don't think I would ever buy one.

I'd LOVE to try it out, but definitely not worth $130.

Does it work better than a keyboard?

Faster?

If yes, potential. If no, who gives a fuck.

It looks kinda cool... I'd love to see some demoes and other vids before making a decision though. And for costing that much, I'd love a hands on before actually dropping the cash on it.

It looks cool. Though, I think I will stick with the keyboard for my games. Starcraft 2 is a game I want to be good at when it comes out, so I don't want to be trying to learn something like this at the same time.

It's the kind of gimmicky thing that if it works even half as well as advertised I'll pick up purely for the smug-git-showing-off factor.

Looks like Project Natal. A neat tech demo with extremely limited advantages for any type of game. And people complain about the Wii remote (and from early appearances, the similar but superior Sony wand thing) being a gimmick!

"the possibilities for RTS and even MMO gamers are very intriguing."

Sounds like the best place to use it. I think anything else would be "meh" at best.

This type of thing comes out every other year and, while interesting, it's obviously a waste of time.

For this to be even REMOTELY usable, a game would have to be designed from the ground up FOR this device which will probably only sell a few thousand units. In other words, it's not going to happen.

I mean, year after year things like this keep getting released and NONE of them ultimately end up making even a BLIP on the gaming landscape radar and yet there are ALWAYS people looking at them and going "WOW! I want one of those because I will DEFINITELY use it more than my Power Glove, Super Scope 6, Aurora Interactor, and Sega Activator!"

And 30 different possible commands? Yeah well how many of them actually have a viable relation to what you're actually trying to do on screen? Furthermore, how many of them don't feel crazy awkward to perform?

Sorry for being so cynical, but seriously, we all know how this is going to end up.
