People don't care about leaderboards, says Blur dev photo

Blur lead designer Gareth Wilson has been commenting on one of the racing genre's most obligatory features -- the leaderboard -- making a bold claim that, despite the appearance of leaderboards in nearly every game on the planet, the amount of people who actually care about being number one is minimal. Apparently, topping the leaderboard is a goal only a select few people ever strive for.

"I think the whole leaderboard thing is a bit of a red herring," he explains. "I don’t think the majority of people really care that much about being number one in the world. Don’t get me wrong, we’re still going to have leaderboards of who’s the best on certain tracks. But PGR3 was a good example of this, you could download the world’s best ghost, and you could race against it and at the first corner, it’s gone. Mere mortals such as me couldn’t keep up with that sort of thing."

Blur will make things a little more user friendly by allowing friends to send time attack ghosts to each other. By adding the ability to trade laptimes amongst those of a more comprable skill level, Bizarre Creation hopes that players will create their own personal leaderboards, giving them a lot more to care about. It's a good idea for sure, and should pay off. Could make a great addition to our own Friday Night Fights.

That said, how much do you care about leaderboards? Does being number one in a certain game get your rocks off? I reckon nobody cares about leaderboards unless they get to number one in something. Only then do leaderboards become important. I'm sure once they lose their position, gamers magically going back to not caring about them again.

If I have an affinity for a game, I'll try my best. For example, Banjo-Kazooie xbla. I tried a serious speedrun once, ranked top 50. I'm not aiming to be first in the world.

It's all about bragging to my friends : "Ha, I totally owned you", but not the rest of the world cause there's always someone better than you.

I care more about comparing times and points with people on my friends list. Like in Burnout Paradise, the most addictive thing to me is the Online Road Rules. I like to beat my friends times but could care less about beating someone who I would have no fun gloating to :D

Their not a deal breaker but they are not a bad thing to have around.

I don't understand why they can't have time attack ghosts and leaderboards. It's not like leaderboards are making anyone have less fun.

I like leaderboards so I can check my rankings against my friends. Usually they have a friends list filter.

Leaderboards do nothing to enhance the gaming experience. I'd rather they put more time into the actual game itself rather than pad it with "features" such as leaderboards and useless achievements.

even the worst games have these now, does anyone care who the top ranked player in Halo Wars is?

This just seems like a "we don't feel like making them" excuse, haha. Personally, I only ever use them with the friends filter, like Sam said, unless it's a game I'm really into, like Mirror's Edge. I spent hours with the number 1 spot's ghost trying to beat him for a myriad of levels. When done right, leaderboards are quite fun!

The problem I find with leader boards is theres all ways 'that' crowd that wanna cheat their way to the top, renders the whole thing pointless.

I only care about my achievements and game score.[gamescore_junkie=OFF]

Only the first and the second in the leaderboard care about the leaderboard.

Leaderboards nowadays are essentially "Who can cheat the longest/fastest". I used to care in arcade machines, but I'd rather just have a good time online than care about my K/D ratio, or how many matches I've won.

@ Sintax Error - I agree, and I've noticed the same thing with Gamerscore and Achievements. They seem to bring out the worst in gamers. For the most part they can give additional play to some gamers but when there's an online score that's tied to the points, it seems to drive some people to cheat.

Dunno. I kinda care I'm the 14th best player in the world in regards to reported outcomes for Metal Gear Solid 2.

Not the first, but among millions who entered their code, 14 isn't bad.

I like it there, for me to attempt if I so choose.

But he's right, very few people do care about that.

I care almost zero about worldwide leaderboards. I do spend time looking at friend leaderboards though, because I have some connection to the people on my list, and beating their scores/times/whatevers is actually possible.

Yeah friend leaderboard are a good edition, expecially when it's a populr game amongst friends.

That said there is nothing worse than seeing some game claim onlineabilityness aaaand it's a leader board...

It's Bizarre Creations, they practically re-imagined the addictiveness of your local arcade high scores with the Geometry Wars 2 Friends' leaderboards. I'm sure they can do something like that in Blur too, doesn't sound like it would be too hard? :P

Leader boards....Feh. The only leaderboard I ever took serious note of was Tenchu Z. I got 54 in "true skill" and then found out that people were boosting. I realized I was wasting my time because no matter how good I thought I was....there were 1000's of people that would find work arounds to rank higher than I had. I also used to be super competitive about DOA4 and most recently with L4D....at some point you remember it’s about having fun not becoming interstellar champion.

I guess I just always picture the person in 1st places as an overweight acne faced mouth-breather in his mid-30's wearing a shirt that says "Cpt. Kirk could kick Skywalker's ass!" and shoveling a pizza hut panormos down his gullet while watching some anime with naked little girls and....well you get the picture. Who wants to be that guy?

I don't think anyone humanly has the time to deal with leaderboards for every game they play, so I don't mind them not being around for the odd game.

Anyways, my experience with them has always been to play a game, have a moment of pride, then feel bad because about thirty-five thousand people in the world can do it better than me. Then I move to another game, forget that leaderboard, then repeat the process.

Its times like that when i'm glad my Xbox 360 isn't connected..

It depends how much the person is into the game. I generally like sorting the leaderboards to see how I compare to my friends, if for nothing else. I generally don't care for the scores for everyone else, but if I am into a game that my friends are also into, I'll use their preformance to judge my own.

I like to compare myself to my friends and occasionally the top ten people in the world, but I've never been one of the top ten nor I have ever tried to be. So leaderboards only hold a passing interest for me.

And they're right, too. The only people who care are the people who actually make it onto the top scores. That's generally a very small percentage of the total players, obviously.

Other than seeing where I rank and my online friends rank, I never really have cared. Especially if the online leaderboard ranks let's say 50,000 people, barely anyone is going to look past the top 100, let alone every single name on the board. Because only top 100 matters apparantly.

Leaderboards are great way to enhance competition among players. If you just want to play to have fun then it won't matter much for you, but to other players who want to beat other folks, it does matter. I mean there's nothing bad about adding leaderboards for vidoe games, you can't go wrong with adding them. I mean look at Diablo 2, they have leaderboards for who has the highest lvls, and from the looks of it, people sure do love being the 1st to reach the top.

At one point I became #1 on Killzone2... and then it hit me-- "This is what everybody is after? OK, whatever." The next day I hit 33rd by the time I logged back on... didn't care one bit. Wasn't even aiming for #1 in the first place.

I stopped giving a shit about leaderboards back in the first week DOA4 was out and the Survival mode leaderboard was topped by someone who had already got the maximum 9999999 points, who I then went on to beat once online and twice in a row in person. I don't believe I ever played enough online to even scratch the top 200 online leaderboard but then again none of the best players in the world were anywhere near the top 200 of the leaderboard either.

I agree with the guy from Bizarre Creation, leaderboards are essentually useless and how you stack up against your friends is far more important than what random guy in Alabama boosted his way up to the top of the leaderboard.

Leaderboards among friends can be alright when you want to poke fun at how shit they are a games but when you check a leaderboard to see that you are in 543,000th place out of 96 bajillion players its a bit pointless.
