Never liked Penny Arcade, especially after they kicked poor Holmes out of PAX. Don't feel strongly about this, but I do hope for the sake of their integrity that its an elaborate joke...
So Penny Arcade will still be free as long as someone else pays for it. I read their Spiderman 3 on PS2 comic once.

It's already ad free for a lot of people, It's called Adblock. Also Penny arcade didn't get rape threats, but they got sued or something for using the word "rape" in a comic.

So you can either give them money to get rid of ONE ad for a year, OR you could just install Ad Blocker for free on your browser of choice and not worry about that ad.....forever.

I think this Kickstarter is dumb too, but people suggesting that you "just use Adblock instead" have no idea what they're talking about. If every single PA browser used Adblock, this kickstarter would become a NECESSITY because of the lack of ad revenue. Also, they didn't "declare a jihad" on Jonathan Holmes OR kick him out of PAX. As usual, everyone is overreacting about everything.
People are free to spend their money how they like, but this just seems like their taking advantage of their fans. All that money to remove a single ad, unlike other Kickstarters that actually need the help this one is an incredibly minor luxury.

They are constantly trying to control content, push popups and other various annoying things on it. This isn't the first time they've had issues with advertisers(even losing the rights to their own site at one point), and it's not the first time the site has been funded by the readers. They've done this before and it works. Ad block solves nothing because the sites you visit, receive no revenue.

Not endorsing this, but I see what they're trying to do. Since so many people use an ad blocker these days, that means that ads don't make as much revenue for them as they used to. Thus, they're trying to get rid of ads and make that money elsewhere, thus taking away what people didn't want and preventing the website from losing revenue. In theory, it's a win/win.
Kickstarter, or crowd-funding in general, is a terrible way to go about it. They should find an alternative, such as a paid service that includes the removal of ads on top of other features that makes said paid service worth using (note that I'm not sure if they already have a paid service since I rarely read Penny Arcade. If they do, then this is actually even more egregious.)

If I frequent a site enough I will eventually toss it onto my whitelist but a majority of the web will never get to that point ^.^

also, to clarify on the Anita Sarkeesian connection: people are drawing the comparison because 1)Anita was being called a con-artist for offering a clear product/service, while the PA guys are being (somewhat) defended for asking for a million dollars for something that is not a real service or product, & is not actually offering rewards as is required by Kickstarter (compare Anita's sticker packs/etc to PA's "I'll think about you while I have sex/You can pay me someone's monthly salary to retweet you" bullshit), & 2) these are the assholes that made blatantly unfunny rape jokes & then sold t-shirts of it when they received some backlash. So /that/ is where that argument is coming from, most likely.
but honestly the thing that upsets me most about this is that I'm sick of the Extra Credits guys/gal finding assholes for hosts. I'd be so so willing to pay out of pocket to see them go back to youtube or self-host or something

Yeah, I don't see the point. I remember a few years ago Jerry (tycho) writing a post talking about how they had gained enough popularity that they could pick and choose the ads on their site, allowing them to help market the things they like while also earning enough money to stay afloat.
