Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

Penny Arcade, IGN enter verbal kumite, provide idiotic filler for Ol' Nexy photo

There's nothing I like more than kinky sex in dangeous situations, like fellatio in a lion's cage or bondage play with jars of scorpions and firecrackers.

Since that has nothing to do with this story though, let's assume I said "there's nothing I like more than two websites bitching at each other over trivial matters," which is exactly what's going on between cash-laden corporate games site IGN and publicly beloved web comic Penny Arcade.

This story gets a bit long and stupid, so please hit the jump unless you have something better to do like masturbating or breathing in.

The story so far:

Do you remember Assassin's Creed? It was a game that came out a few weeks back (approximately four years ago Internet Standard Time) that was met with a firestorm of conflicting reviews. Some people loved it, some people hated it, most of you focused unnecessarily on its producer's breasts, and the only thing people could eventually agree on is that it did, in fact, exist. Penny Arcade, a site known for applying metric ass loads of verbalization to the virtual page, went on at great length about how it was an amazing experience, how it folded their laundry and how they even got to second base with the game after a night drinking Coronas and watch Breakfast at Tiffany's.

In a then-unrelated move, IGN reviewed the title and gave it a stunningly low "7.7" -- the mainstream-site equivalent of some kind of fictional negative number that's been divided by zero merely to show how much disdain the reviewer had for the title. By comparison our own Rev Anthony gave the game a "5.5" -- the Destructoid equivalent of a flashing neon "12" covered in porno and glitter.

Since Rev escaped the view of PA's Gabe by virtue of his ability to blend into his surroundings like some kind of frightened lizard, Gabe instead bitched about mainstream sites like IGN by twice slinging verbal hot-fire that could very easily be construed as meaning that IGN takes bribes and/or eats children. Here at Destructoid we take our jobs as purveyors of truth very seriously so while we cannot claim IGN has ever taken a bribe, I've personally seen certain IGN staffers kick the homeless and menstruate on crucifixes.

Here's where things get interesting: in IGN's recent podcast one of IGN's resident residents waxes bitchcakes about Gabe's words on Assassin's Creed. Gabe, in turn, responds the only way he knows how: huge blocks of text. Have a look:

I guess some guy at IGN is mad at me and he lays into me on their podcast. You can follow the link and listen for yourself but I don't recommend it, they don't really deserve the traffic spike. Basically some IGN guy is super pissed because I said I didn't agree with the bad reviews of Assassins Creed. I'm actually of the opinion that if we're pissing off IGN we must be doing something right.

Honestly my main concern was to make sure people didn't avoid the game based on some of the poor reviews. I got something like four hundred mails after that post and 90% of them looked like this:

"Thank you for sharing your thoughts on Assassin's Creed.  I was going to skip it based on the reviews.  After reading your write up I rented it though.  I've played about 10 hours and love it!"

So there you go, that's all I wanted.
The IGN thing is just sort of silly. He says I should leave reviewers alone because I "just do things and write things as a freaking comic artist." I'm not sure how to respond to that. I think he's trying to insult me but everything he said there is true.

The sad thing is I wasn't even talking about their review. I was talking about the 7.0 from 1Up. No one actually pays any attention to IGN or their 7-10 review scale. To tell you the truth I still don't even know what IGN's review of AC was. Was it bad? It's really kind of cute that he thinks I was talking about him. After hearing how worked up he got on the podcast I actually feel kind of bad ruining it. It must have been a real thrill for him to believe he was relevant.

And that brings us to the present where Gabe's compatriot Tycho (nom de reality: Jerry Holkins) goes on at his own great length defending his hetero-life-partner for his stinging barbs aimed at IGN.

Of course, this entire conflict is as idiotic as that episode of Friends where David Schwimmer's character Ross appeared in front of the camera, but I have to hand it to the PA guys for their clever tactics here. They know full well that public opinion is the most important currency on the Internet and owing to their massive following and the fact that this scuffle paints them as the independent David vs the Goliath of corporate mega-site IGN they simply can't lose, regardless of how retardedly petty this entire thing is.

What ever happened to the days when two men would go out into the street, brawl a bit, one would get stabbed and die and the other would inherit his flock of sheep and his wife? Personally I'd pay good money to see any Internet personality in a knife fight, but Niero has forbade me from setting up inter-website death matches regardless of how completely positive I am that I could shank Spencer Yip before he ever saw me coming.

I'm like the motherfu*%in' wind!

yeah, I'm familiar with PA's policy and I applaud them for it. The problem is he defends the game like 7 is a horrible career ending score and it's not even his game, it seems like since the game isn't getting 9's and 10's he feels he has to defend their taste in games.

Gabe defends the ending by saying that most likely some reviewers didn't beat it through to the end because of deadlines, first that is a cheap accusation and second, I did beat the game through to the end and it does suck. The biggest problem is they squandered what could have been an awesome ending to set up a sequel and that is bad and greedy game design, it is a blatant "buy the sequel" moment.

If PA gets this defensive about 7's for a game they didn't make, I tremble to think what happens if their Penny arcade adventure game doesn't get a 9.

If I were Gabe, I wouldn't be using the fact that one of his readers tried and loved the game after he reviewed it as a basis for any sort of argument. If only because it doesn't exactly speak to anything but the possibility that said fan is a sycophant, and only loved the game because he wanted to be like Gabe.

Meh to the whole thing.

All we have to go on is their word. And while they've done a lot of good for charity and whatnot, that doesn't mean that everything they say ought to be taken at face value. In this case it seems suspect that they'd go to any length to defend the game when they've had so much tied up in it, from advertising right down to Gabe's exclusive tie-in comic.

I'm not saying that they took some payola for the write-up or anything, just that it's a little hard to take the thing at face value when so many things cast a shadow of doubt on the whole affair.

Does anyone still pay attention to IGN(or any video game review) sites anymore? Outside of Metacritic, it's useless. The IGN video review was 10 minutes of bitching and bitching and bitching... and then it got a 7.7 which is supposed to be "good" if we're counting the 1-10 scale that EGM used since we were lil' kids. But even back then a 7 was considered shit. The best part is that if he simply gave it .3 points(which means nothing) there would be 100% less shitstorm.

No blood, not interested(though the crucifix menstruation almost counts).

I think they should meet on the field of honor and attempt to stab one another to death with old Atari2600 joysticks to the sound track of River City Ransom while some retarded 14 year old breaths into a microphone and uses curse words not fully understood. Then, it will be complete.

Tycho & Gabe just deliver a win-win situation here. Plus it seems like gaming media is getting way too touchy about opinions. "If i dont like it, I will give it a bad score!" whee.. jerks.

Even games that are a bit challenging get marked down. Honestly what is going on with these so-called "reviewers" of ign and the like. (sigh) things just keep going downhill.

Yeah Sharpless? So what? Be it one or a hundred PA fans, they're all still suspect as far as I'm concerned. You can't tell if that one guy was motivated to buy the game by his fanboyish love for PA or not, and the rest don't even exist as far as us, the readers, are concerned. Or as far as we know, for that matter.

As far as knowing who you can trust goes, I guess the answer is that you can't really trust anyone but yourself when it comes down to it.
These reviews and write-ups ought to mean little when all is said and done. You've got to be able to make up your own mind about whether or not a game is worth it, and with it being so easy to rent a game and try it out for yourself, there's no reason to rely on reviews to make your purchase decisions for you.

Which makes that one PA fan's endorsement of the game post write-up all the more worthless. If he was on the fence about it, what's stopping him from employing any number of rental options in order to see if it was worth buying? Why wait until Gabe says the game is great? Hmn.

Meh.

Whatever, dude. You're just as suspect as they are. Just because you don't agree with someone, it doesn't mean their opinion is biased bullshit.

All that having been said, all this really comes down to is a case in which IGN reacted poorly to something that didn't really have anything to do with them directly, and PA acting like silly assholes in return, like they nearly always do. None of it is all that important.

I'm just pointing out that PA's endorsement of the game is suspect. We can assume that they're operating on pure motives, but who the fuck knows? Especially given the ads and the tie-in comic. It's not to say that they're dealing in shady business, but that none of us really know. Gabe hit all the right notes in his critique of mainstream gaming critics, but if there's the possibility that it was brought about for all the wrong reasons, then what end does it ultimately serve?

I'm a fan of PA's stuff, and their contributions to charity are an inspiration. PAX is pretty rad too. I just don't think that grants them immunity from having the same BS magnifier that they employ on everyone else turned right back their way. Doubting their motives as I do, I can't really give much of a shit about what Gabe has to say about the game.
Cyberxion's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/28/2007 19:36

Sharpless, are you a PA fan then? I ask merely because you seem to be unable to come to grips with the possibility that they might not be the angels they've built themselves up to be. It's typical ignorant fanboy behavior.

I'm merely discussing the possibility that they may have been motivated to put a positive spin on the game for unpure reasons, not that they absolutely did. And I said that with that doubt hanging out there, it's hard to put much stock in what they're saying. Even were PA's opinions somehow worth more than everyone else's, in this case taking them at face value is even less reasonable than usual, seeing as they've run ads for the game, and Gabe even did a cool tie-in comic.

This is just my take on it. You didn't need to take it so personally. If you want to blindly trust these guys for whatever reason you see fit to chose, then that's cool man. Just don't act like a dick because I feel that there's too much doubt cast upon their motivations to warrant taking them at face value this time around.
Cyberxion's Avatar - Comment posted on 11/28/2007 19:42

Sorry, that's a little harsh. You're not acting like a dick. You're acting irrationally, but I can't say that you're a dick just because you're getting a little heated for reasons that are beyond me.

Of course I'm suspect dude. So the fuck are you, and so what? I don't particularly give a shit about whether or not you agree with me at the end of the day, and I'm pretty sure you'll be fine one way or the other with me disagreeing with you. That's the point really. That you use your own fucking head. Who cares what PA says one way or the other about the game? Meh.

I've already made an ass out of myself, so I just want to make one more point.

Whoever said that I necessarily disagree with them, Sharpless? Just because I doubt the purity of their motivation doesn't mean that I disagree with them, so trying to play that angle seems a little presumptuous to me man.

You should never allow a meaningless, arbitrary integer promulgated by an arbitrary voice who came to power arbitrarily make decisions for you. That's essentially what Gabriel was trying to say, but he said it in a Gabriel way and it may be that the signal was lost."

Nex, your writing is full of win.

I respect PA for standing up to the man, but like IGN was trying to point out with their ridiculously immature attempt at an insult, they aren't reviewers, they're comic artists. Although this is true, that doesn't mean that their opinions can't be respected. Like they pointed out in one of their posts, they only support the ads of games they personally endorse because their fans trust them. IGN shouldn't have gotten their panties in such a bunch over all of this. Although it was amusing seeing a big gaming review site seemingly backing into a corner and arching their backs at "just a comic site."

I make frowny face at gaming journalism. I hope that someday it actually becomes a mature, respected profession. But alas, this is teh internets, and you don't need credentials to be somebody.

I'd love to play Assassin's Creed, but my roommates have overtaken my 360 since Rock Band came out. Which isn't BAD, per se, but I'd like to kill more ancient bad people.

I think PA's got my vote on their opinion here. Opinion of course, but at least those guys can take a joke, unlike IGN, who despises controversy and dissent on their pre-chosen Good Games.

ign has lost their minds, but PA gets money from Ubisoft for the AC stuff. no doubt in my mind. so i'm in the line with Cyberxion on this, it smells fishy.

they have never "defended" a game this much before, even though pretty much everyone who has played it agrees with the criticism against it (its just a matter of taste if you like it or not, but that game is not a great game, everyone agrees on that).

but the drama is on ign, and they should get their heads out of their asses and stop thinking they're above everyone else. its a piece of shit podcast too, really really bad... can't stand those guys. however, i do enjoy their reviews, i have nothing against their reviews.

Opinions are like assholes...everyone's got one. Personally, I love Assassin's Creed. Is it perfect? Hardly. I picked up the PS3 version and I've had the random lockups, but not many other issues that I've seen posted online. I think its a great game, and the inevitable sequel will be great, but I think the reviews have been a bit stilted.

I do think that most people take reviews with a grain of salt. They're all opinion pieces. Play the game yourself and then make your choice. Don't rely on the words of a guy paid to write reviews, but do take them for what they are...OPINIONS. I must say, though...IGN needs to grow up and realize they're going to get criticism. I miss the old Imagine Games Network...when IGN was actually GOOD.

I love IGN's "they're not reviewers, they're just artists" argument. As if it's soooo hard to be a reviewer. If you're a decent writer and you've played games for quite some time, there you go. I'm sure either of the PA guys fit that bill.

Yes, I am new, created this account just to post.

I thought I might just add this little bit.

What Gabe from P-A was doing was not attacking the IGN pod caster. Even though, and it seemed to be cut off a bit in the podcast, the ranter called him a schmuck at the end.

As a reminder of what Gabe and Tycho might call "attacking" would probably be this:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/02/23

That I think counts as actually a response from them.

These days its all "responsibility" and "maturity" in their words....

...its a damn shame too.
